** CLOSING TODAY (Thurs/Nov. 9) - “Animals – in from the wild” – installation art exhibit by Bill Santen at KSB, Louisville
I finally made it to the Kentucky School for the Blind in Louisville yesterday to see Bill’s installation/exhibit. Inspiring and playful; all around wonderful. Part folk-art with hand-carved animals hidden in trees that tightly hug the wall. Part pop-up sci-fi animal comic with fantastical animal sculptures/assemblages that look like the soft-sad-gentle-sweet-tweaked world of Bill’s paintings come to life. All meant to be experienced with your hands as well as your eyes. I know it’s a longshot, but I wanted to make sure peeps knew they had one last day to check it. The gallery should be open from 10am-2pm and then again from 4-7pm. I do encourage you to call ahead. This is an exhibit at a school, not a full time gallery/museum, so a little ‘hey I’m heading over to see the exhibit – just wanted to make sure it was still up’ nudge to get them over to turn on the lights in the gallery is a good thing. You can ring Paula Penrod at 502/897-1583 ext.262 with that nudge. She’s happy to help. You can find driving directions on the KSB website - http://www.ksb.k12.ky.us/Main/Location.htm. Super simple to locate from I-64. For more about the exhibit, dig out the last Lex Pro or click on over to Bill’s website – http://www.billsanten.com.

** ONE NIGHT ONLY - Thurs/November 9 – Creative Experimental Places and In-ter-space @ Georgetown College

If you do head to Louisville tonight for “Animals…,” you might want to make the short detour to Georgetown on your way back to catch the two one-night-only collaborative exhibits the sculpture and painting students at Georgetown College have cooked up. The first half, C.E.P. (Creative Experimental Places), involves works that, according to the press release, “serve as spatial interventions and explorations.” Might as well let the press release do the telling since I haven’t seen them … about C.E.P. – “Each artist has carefully selected a space for a site specific installation. These works are meant to redefine your interaction with an environment and challenge the previous notions of knowledge connected to common spaces.” About In-ter-space, the other portion of the collaboration - “This exhibition will change the way you think about painting and look at space...work will transform environments using pattern and traverse multiple surfaces.“ Both exhibits will be up tonight (Thurs/Nov. 9) from 7-9pm in the Anne Wright Wilson Fine Arts Building at Georgetown College. For more info/directions/what-not, go to http://www.georgetowncollege.edu/art or get in touch with Karen Gilenwater, by email at karen_gillenwater@georgetowncollege.edu or by phone at 502/863-8399.

** Sat/November 11 - ROCK (Rollergirls of Central Kentucky) Recruitment Party!
Our friends Monica and Neely (and tons of other good peeps, I’m sure) have been working on getting ROCK off the ground for a while. This Saturday, the aspiring rollergirls are hosting a recruitment party at the Bowhouse, 324 Preston Avenue (yeah, you might recognize that as the address of the old bornmugged compound or, before that, Dockery’s Plantation). ROCK is looking for “skaters (ladies 18+up), volunteers, and anyone ready for Lexington's own derby revolution!” The will kick-off around 6:30. Peeps are encouraged to show up early for the infor sharing, ‘cause around 7:30 the music kicks-in with Tina Coffer and Fabio Goose Attach and then perks back up from 9-10pm with the Vibrolas and Arsenic on the Rocks. It’s FREE fun open to all ages. If you got questions, drop a line to booking@rockentucky.com or call Neely at 859/539-0473. Check out http://myspace.com/rockentucky for more info and keep your eyes peeled for the launch of www.rockentucky.com.

** Sun/November 12 – Community Potluck/Show @ The Icehouse

Any of y’all make it out to the 4th of July potluck/show at The Icehouse? Was one of my favoritest events of the year. Everyone eating and talking (who knew I could enjoy talking to peeps?) and then the jams kicked in. Felt happier and (somehow) more real than your run of the mill shows environs. Well, if you missed that one, don’t miss the one on Sunday. Gumbo Ya Ya is kicking in some FREE grub (including one vegan dish) for the base food supply. We’ll all gather round 6 and commence to chowing. Music – Ill Ease, Jason Zavala, Joe Meredith, and Lunar/Solar - will start soon after. Look for fuller details in “The Picks”.

** Pilgrims Wanted!
EL and F Gallery and con/temp will present S.E.A.P. (southern evolution of art processes) a “twenty seven hour walking pilgrimage and distancing ritual” from 4pm- 4pm, Friday, November 17th – Saturday, November 18th at the Labyrinth, Old Episcopal Burial Grounds at the corner of 3rd Street and Elm Tree Lane. Directly from a recent email – “Pilgrims Wanted! Those wishing to join S.E.A.P. members during this period are encouraged to attend the So You Want To Be A Pilgrim workshop at Third Street Stuff Coffee on Thursday, November 16th at 7pm.” The workshop will be facilitated by Ben Fryman, a licensed pilgrim. For more info, hit up Bruce Burris, ElandFGallery (elandfgallery@yahoo.com), Ben Fryman, S.E.A.P. (lbfryman@aol.com), or Kurt Gohde, con/temp (con_temp00@yahoo.com).

** Nightfly Distro
Our man Mikey T is starting his own music distro. Here’s an email he sent out recently with the details -
“Hey kids- Mikey T here. I'm starting a music distro here in town and wanted submissions. Starting in January, I'm going to be setting up shop in Charmed Life Tattoo (on Euclid above the Muzic Shoppe) and will have a couple tables worth of local music as well as super underground stuff from all over the world. Yes, it is going to take time to beef up the inventory but I wanted to start with local stuff so please email me at wasabi.wolf@gmail.com. I will be specializing in more extreme stuff like noise, improv, punk, psych, metal, etc. but don't mind giving anything a chance. Here's the deal, I buy some copies of your or your friend's release for cost and then resell it to the public. What's in it for you? Your music gets further out to the kids and gives your stuff a chance to sit alongside other projects in the area. This way someone who might not necessarily get exposed to your stuff will now get a chance AND you get some moolah for those records sitting in boxes in your kitchen!!! The table will be up two Sundays a month starting in January so hit me with emails. Thanks, MT”

** Fri-Sun, November 17- 19 - “Good Folks Fest” @ Mellwood Arts Center, Louisville
Our friend Brian Manley of The Smacks! turned us on to this (he and J.Todd will be playing a Smacks! set during the Sunday festivities).

Set up by Scott "Monkey Boy" Scarboro (a Lex-patriate who’s now the director of the Mellwood Arts Center in Louisville), the “Good Folks Fest” centers around Outsider Art, both visual and performance. Lots going on from Friday afternoon well into Sunday evening – artists from all over the country, a slew of one man/woman bands, weird homemade instruments, and tons more. Go to http://junkabilly.com/goodfolkfest.html for the full scoop.

THE FESTIVAL QUARTET w/TOM BROSSEAU, THE LAY ALL OVER ITS, and ALELA DIANE

doors 8:30pm, show 9pm, all ages welcome, FREE for UK students/$5 for non-students

http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif
A four artist bill featuring two hot Chicago jazz groups (awight – p’haps it’s a stretch to call The Lay All Over Its a jazz group – more like locked-groove bass + drum experimentation with roots in jazz), The Festival Quartet (led by Vandermark 5 drummer Tim Daisy) and The Lay All Over Its (led by Triage bassist Jason Ajemian), and two members of the new folk movement, Tom Brosseau (equal parts Jeff Buckley and Devendra Banhart) and (new folkie discovered by Joanna Newsom - in the same vein as Newsom and Coco Rosie). Part of the Outside the Spotlight jazz and improvised music series sponsored by WRFL and Action Arts. [Full Disclosure: I helped organize this one.]

:: Friday, November 10 ::
THE RUDIES @ The Limestone Club, 221 N. Limestone
9pm-midnight, all ages, $5

Jerrod and the rest of the Rudies crew make a rare all ages appearance at a benefit for Kentucky Heartwood. File Under: Skankin fun. I’ve only seen ‘em once, but I loved them. Yeah, it kinda surprised me too, but I’m dead serious. http://myspace.com/therudies

PALROUR BOYS w/JONEZETTA, IN ENDEAVORS ITALYA, and DESTROY TO GIVE BIRTH
@ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue – 7pm, all ages, $7 – presented by Counterfiction Productions

The P-Boys return to their all ages roots (before morphing into The Parlour Boys, these guys really helped build Lexington’s healthy all ages scene as Summer Melts Faster). Go straight to http://myspace.com/counterfiction.com for samples from all the bands or skip around to all their pages for deeper study - http://myspace.com/parlourboys, http://myspace.com/jonezetta, http://myspace.com/inendeavorsitalya, http://myspace.com/destroytogivebirth

community potluck/show – FREE food from Gumbo Ya Ya (and you?), music by ILL EASE w/JASON ZAVALA, JOE MEREDITH, and LUNAR/SOLAR @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross Street – just off W. Maxwell – 6pm, all ages, $3

A lazy Sunday potluck/show at The Icehouse featuring some FREE food from Gumbo Ya Ya (plus whatever you wanna bring to share) and music from Ill Ease (aka Elizabeth Sharp - file under: Brooklyn art-scuzz pop genius), Jason Zavala (epic pop from the leader of The Elephants), Joe Meredith (of Louisville's The Merediths), and Lunar/Solar. Bring eats or drinks or just yourself. [Full Disclosure: I helped organize this one.]

:: Monday, November 13 ::
THE ELECTRICS w/BUDDIES @ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue
9pm, all ages, FREE for UK students/$5 for non-students

Another Outside the Spotlight series show. This one features the European jazz quartet The Electrics (which includes members of Atomic and The Thing – both of which have been through Lex as part of OTS in recent years) and a couple of glorious guitar weirdos (one of whom used to play in deerhoof and Caroliner) from Western Massachusetts who call themselves 'Buddies'. Ghttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifonna be a blow out, fo’ sho’. [Full Disclosure: I helped organize this one.] http://ayler.com

:: Friday, November 17 ::
Gallery Hop! @ locations all around downtown Lexington
5-8pm, all ages, FREE

You’ll wonder where all the cute hipsters come from. I mean, seriously, where are these F’ers hiding during the really hip stuff that goes down?

:: Friday, November 17 ::
“Toy Polloy” art opening w/PARLOUR and TIGHT LEATHER @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross Street
5pm ‘til whenever’, all ages, FREE (they are gonna pass the hat for the out-of-towners, Parlour, at some point in the evening, so be cool and plan on bringing a couple extra bucks)

Speaking of the really hip stuff going down around town … just off the Hop path, at the Icehouse, you’ll find “Toy Polloy”.

Larry Treadway (aka Tread) is forever reinventing himself. After booking/managing the Wrocklage, the stalwart venue of Lexington’s college rock/indie presence in the late 80’s/90’s, and leading the brutal and sludgy (and widely acclaimed) Ted Bundy’s Volkswagon, Larry almost singlehandedly destroyed the local indie music scene 10 years ago, splitting with the Wrocklage and Dave Butler and opening Area 51. (Two indie rock clubs in Lexington? Yeah, that was gonna work. Both died within six months.). Soon after that he hit talk-radio as “Larry Joe Treadway, the intelligent redneck” (if think I’m remembering the moniker correctly). Then came Brains on Film, the terrific film website/message board he did/does with Joe Turner and George Maranville. Then/now a stint as a men’s health guru for Samaritan Hospital. (All these periods overlap and I’m skipping steps – somewhere back there insert ‘graphic designer for LFUCG’s Office of Public Information). Anyhoo, now we get to Tread’s current incarnation - toy camera auteur. And, it seems that, as with everything the crazy bastard puts time toward, he’s good at it ... “award winning” good n’ shite. “Toy Polloy” is a collection of 42 photos from 30 different that Larry put together from artists working with toy cameras. It’s not a schtick – the results are pretty amazing, and anything but toy-ish. (You can peep a couple at http://www.toypolloy.com/about.html.) Good job, Larry.

It’s always a party at the Icehouse, and you know that means music. This time ‘round, we’ll be treated to a rare live performance by Louisville art-rock/post-rock legends Parlour (led by our friend Tim Furnish and featuring former members of Crain, The For Carnation, Weapons, and Sapat) and a set by mind-altering locals Tight Leather (with peeps you’ll recognize from RC ProAm and Mad Shadows … and, if’n you’re a consumer of vintage wares, http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifJonk). Show up early. Stay late.

:: Friday, November 17 ::
THE GENDERS w/THE LUXURY PUSHERS, THE NIGHTSHADES and HEARTHROB @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $5

The Genders bring us revved-up garage-y/proto-punk-y rock n’ roll all the way from Tel Aviv. Recommended to fans of the New York Dolls, the Stooges, or, for those familiar with the revivalists, early-stuff by Cincy’s The Greenhornes. My favorite line from their jam “Snake Charmer” – “Talk ain’t cheap / When you get paid by the hour.” Thanks for setting up this one go directly to Johnny Evans. http://www.thegenders.com,

:: Saturday, November 18 ::
CALIFONE w/THE JUDY GREEN and AARON ROSENBLUM @ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue
doors 8:30pm, show 9pm, all ages, $5 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM and Action Arts

Just got an email with last week’s top 30 on RFL. #1? Califone’s newest release, “Roots and Crowns.” You know them dj’s ain’t dumb (don’t make me pull the Golden Key stats). Every time I start describing Califone, it comes out as an ad for Wilco - lovely folk/blues/pop melodies encased in impeccably orchestrated atmospherics, fading in and out like your dream road-trip radio experience. Wilco’s a good jumping off point, but think less roots and more rustic blues base. It’s enveloping stuff on record. Can’t wait to see them live. The Judy Green is a mystery to me. Friends of Califone from Chicago. Other than that, I don’t know much. Aaron Rosenblum’s set at Mecca in October (on a bill with Auk Theater and D.I.B) knocked me out! That night it was Fahey-inspired guitar folk. One never knows what to expect from him – his range runs freak folk to abstract noise - but it always seems pitch perfect for the occasion. Moral: Skip the ‘fashionably late’ schtick on the 18th. [Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Monday, November 20 ::
PORTASTATIC w/THE HIGH WATER MARKS and JASON ZAVALA @ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue
9pm, all ages, $3 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

I used to play basketball on Monday nights, then came Diane and the Shell, Ladyhawk, The Electrics, and Portastatic. Anyway, another great Monday night gig in Lexington. I loved Superchunk, but lost track of Mac’s Portastatic project after “Slow Note From A Sinking Ship.” Wasn’t out of dislike, just neglect. “Truckstop Cassettes” from last year’s Bright Ideas disc sucked me back in (“I Wanna Know Girls” is another great jam from that record). Mac and crew have just released a new one record called “Be Still Please” and the tracks I’ve heard are equally charming burners. The High Waters have been on the shelf since their “Know Your Own – Free Lexington” gig at Mecca in early September. Time they set us to pogo-ing and smiling again. Two appearances by J-Z and band (? - I know he’s arranged for one to join him at the Icehouse gig) in eight days?! We must be livin’ right. A “P.S.” – I’m incredibly excited that Mac and the Merge family have signed Oakley Hall. If’n you haven’t already, check ‘em at http://myspace.com/oakleyhall.

:: Monday, November 20 ::
BLUE CHEER w/NASHVILLE PUSSY @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $12

Word is, this’ll be the original lineup of San Fran’s blues-laced psych legends Blue Cheer. Could be great (go to their MySpace site and listen to “Summertime Blues” or “Just A Little Bit,” both released in 1968) or not (you still got their MySpace window open? well, listen to “Hunter of Love,” released in 1991 … I think it was around this period that they briefly changed their name to Blues Hammer). I don’t know who’s playing first Nashville Pussy (featuring ex-Lex Blaine What’s-his-name) or the Cheer. The Dame calendar says to list them as co-headliners. I’http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.bold.gifm guessing the Pussy headlines Lexington, so if you’re going to see the Cheer I’d recommend you show up early.
