** Fri & Sat/Sept. 29&30 - Sabi Diri returns!
Aminata Cairo (formerly Baruti) recently re-upped her dance troupe Sabi Diri as Sabi Diri, s.b.i. (so be it). The group’s short high energy piece at Mecca’s “Hafla Pura” a couple weeks ago absolutely killed. The troupe celebrates its return to the scene with “coming out/fundraiser” performances tonight and Saturday at ArtsPlace (161 N. Mill St.). The shows start at 7:30pm. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 4-12 years old, free for children younger than 4. After you see them live, you’re going to want to get in on the fun. Well, you’re in luck, Sabi Diri will host an ‘experience workhhop’ involving song, dance, and drama, this Sunday, October 1st from 2:30-5pm at Mecca: Live Studio and Gallery, 451 Chair Avenue (just off S. Broadway near Bolivar). The workshop fee is $25.

A little more info about the troupe …
The newly formed Sabi Diri, s.b.i. dance company is the rebirth of Sabi Diri, which originated in 2001. Drawing from their multi-ethnic heritage and cultural pride, Sabi Diri, s.b.i. aims to be an example of celebrating the human spirit and of “creating spaces without apologies”. Under the artistic Direction of Aminata Cairo and Jason Thompson, and the musical direction of Tripp Bratton, the company produces performance pieces rooted in traditional and contemporary African, Afro-Surinamese, and other ethnic dance forms, but are multi-dimensional and inclusive of song, poetry, visual arts, and live music.

THE INFECTED w/THE YELLOW BELTS and HEARTTHROB @ The Dame
9pm, all ages, $5

There’s something to be said for reliving your youth. At 24, I’m hardly what many past their early adolescence would refer to as old, but in “punk rock” years, 24 is just past prime. But, the truly beautiful thing about punk rock is that once it’s in you, part of you stays young forever. Regardless of how old and jaded you may get, that small thread in your heart can still get tugged by the right song; or in this case, the right band.

Along with Lextown’s bastard sons, the Redheaded Stepchildren, the Infected is what weaned me into punk rock. In fact, my first local music purchase was Eugene Records release #1, The Infected / RHSC split 7”. It astounded me that there were not only punk rock bands in Lexington (I was 14 and living in Georgetown at the time…so close, yet so far away, as they say), but they were putting out material…on vinyl no less! Come to think of it, that was the first piece of vinyl I ever bought!

My first show in Lexington was a few years later, at the now defunct Rockhaven. I went with some friends on a whim just to check out an all ages show. As I walked in, I looked on stage, only to recognize the guys from the 7”. “Holy shit!” I believe was my reaction. “That’s the Infected!” To this day, my girlfriend pokes fun at me for being a tad star-struck by people that she knew then, and I now count among my friends. But at the time, it was a big deal to me. Coming from a small town, and generally being a bit ostracized for my tastes (I know, I know…typical punk rock story), it was amazing to see that the stuff I read about in books and magazines really did, and still does, happen. Moreover, a band that only existed to me on a rarely-updated website and in the handful of releases I managed to pick up when I got the chance to go to Lexington, was right in front of me. I never thought I’d get to be part of that, and there I was. That show was incredibly important to me. Seven years later, I get to relive it. The setting may be different. The friends I’m there with may be different. But the feeling is the same.

I don’t mean to gush on about one band on a three-band bill. The Yellow Belts and Heartthrob are two of Lextown’s finest (not to mention both being made up of members of some of the other finest bands to ever grace our little town), but I don’t think either band minds. In fact, I’m quite sure they understand and agree; and in at least a few cases, would say almost the exact same thing if in my place.

They say that after 21, there’s nothing to really get excited about any more. Lucky for me, on the 30th, I get to look forward to being 17 again, if only for a couple hours.
~ Michael Lunsford

:: Saturday, October 7 ::
THE SCOURGE OF THE SEA w/GUNSHY and ANDREW BRYANT @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St. – just off W. Maxwell – 9pm, all ages, $5

The triumphant return of our newly-minted indie pop stars. Scourge has been out for the better part of the last two months supporting their new record “Make Me Armored” (on Alias Records). Reviews have been great. (They were recently voted ‘Band of the Week” or something like that at PasteMagazine.com.) Come welcome the hard workin’ mens home. http://myspace.com/thescourgeofthesea, http://myspace.com/thegunshy, http://myspace.com/andrewbryant.

:: Monday, October 9 ::
AWESOME COLOR w/TALL FIRS and WARMER MILKS @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $5

Rest assured there will be good times in damaged rock when Ecstatic Peace recording groups Awesome Color and Tall Firs join Warmer Milks @ the Dame for one of the more "rad!!..." nights in Lexington music. Awesome Color play Hendrix meets The Band meets Sonic Youth style squax rock. Classic rock roots, mad good guitar solos, and jams that go well with beer. Tall Firs bring the rock in a decidedly more "lo-fi roots" variety. They still jam, and... yes... they still compliment beer drinking... maybe microbrew consumption. As for the Warmer Milks? That's always up in the air isn't it? Could be disjointed guitar chords and feedback, could be driving kraut influenced peyote jamz, could be harmony laden acid folk... they keep you guessing, and don't often disappoint. It's gonna be good. Come out and rock it rock it. – Chris Bush

:: Tuesday, October 10 ::
ISWHAT?! w/SELF SCIENTIFIC @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $5

what is
ISWHAT?!
hip hop and high horns
heartbeats and high five slaps
jazz and jizzmatic improvisations
lips flipping to beatbox drums
and poetic exhalations
it's like little kids with nothing
but turntables to launch
musical missiles of rebellion,
bass lines slapped for the sake
of experiencing ecstasy
like amiri baraka and rakim
last poets on lost street corners
proclaiming that the word
is near

:: Tuesday, October 10 ::
NOISE NOMADS w/ARA and THREE-LEGGED RACE @ The Frowny Bear, 208 Forest Park
9pm, all ages, donations requested for touring bands

Noise Nomads (despite the plural) is the solo project of Jeff Hartford from western Massachusetts/Providence. The first time I saw him live was in Mike Connelly's apartment in Lexington about 4 years ago. What I witnessed was a rag doll wooly mammoth/hobo creature making a harrowing migration from the bedroom to the bathroom over the course of twenty minutes occasionally moaning/grunting through a practice amp hung around its neck. When the beast finally made it to the bathroom he unleashed a blast of chaotic feedback and drone from an air organ that was a triumphant end to the journey, to say the least. Shows I've seen since then have involved more "traditional" forms of music but have remained just as primal and entertaining. - Robert Beatty

The shows, organized by everybody’s favorite radio station WRFL 88.1FM, will run every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 1pm through the end of September (and possibly beyond). Here’s a look at what’s confirmed for the coming week:

TODAY! Friday, Sept.15th - The Tall Boys, a psychedelic/experimental blues trio. These veterans of the Lexington scene sound like a combination of Captain Beefheart and Charlie Patton. Members of Club Dub and the Brass Knuckle Boys.

Monday, Sept. 18th - Caves (aka Ben Allen), Three Legged Race (aka Robert Beatty), Walter Carson (aka Daryl Cook), and Chris Bush (aka … uh … Chris Bush). If you’ve been to a gig at Charles Mansion or The Frowny Bear, then you know what’s up. If not, go Monday and expect to be simultaneously excited and frightened.

Friday Sept. 22nd – The Scourge of the Sea, our intimate local popsters cum national indie heartthrobs.

More shows to be announced soon. Keep your dial glued to 88.1 for the scoop.

MISS KITTYTWISTER AND HER HOT DOGS w/DUCK FAT and TREVOR TREMAINE (ATTEMPT) @ Third Street Stuff Coffee (outside) - 6-9pm, all ages, FREE

Party in the parking lot! A run of musical silliness coinciding with Gallery Hop. Trevor Tremaine (of Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair Police, and Attempt) starts things off with a solo set of tunes from the Attempt songbook. Duck Fat (aka Eli Riveire and Nick Warner) follow with their debut performance art/cute pop performance. (Is it fair to call this their debut? Their lives seem to be cute pop/performance art pieces.) “Lexington trash rock/twee pop burners,” Miss Kittytwister and Her Hot Dogs (aka the ever-lovable Jessi Fehrenbach and J. Todd Dockery and friends) wrap up the festivities. The KT/HD description is from Tre Tre Tremaine himself. In fact, I don’t know why I’m bothering with this descripto part at all. Here are Trevor’s other descriptions … Duck Fat = “charming nonsense care of Nick Warner and Eli Riveire.” And, of himself, he says, “playing songs from the ATTEMPT repetoire, solo, acoustic, miserable.” So, that’s that.
[Full Disclosure: I helped set up this show.]

:: Friday, September 15 ::
WARMER MILKS record release party w/ARA and ROBERT BEATTY (dj set) @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - 9pm, all ages, $3

Don’t flirt with any other post-Hop spots (well, maybe the fun at E L and F Gallery aka Latitude) – this is the one for you. The Milks had a hard-driving summer on the road. East Coast, West Coast, North Coast, South Coast – you name it they rocked it. Now, the reward – their new record “ “ on New Jersey’s Troubleman Unlimited finally dropped Tuesday. Expect a full fledge storm of shambalic, psychedelic drone outbursts. Ara = beautiful aural atmospherics from Sara O’Keefe of Eyes and Arms of Smoke (accompanied at this performance by her man Trevor Tremaine – yeah, you saw his name above). Robot Booty aka Robert Beatty (of Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Hair Police, and Three Legged Race) will be jammin’ tunes throughout the evening. Peeking Robo’s superior musical taste is worth the price of admission itself.

“Hafla Pura” featuring CAROLENA NERICCIO (of Fat Chance Belly Dance), MEGHA (of Devyani), RAKADU GYPSY DANCE, SABI DIRI, BIG MARACAS, MICK JEFFRIES’ LAPTOP LOUNGE, and more @ Mecca, 451 Chair Ave – just off S. Broadway near Bolivar – doors 8pm, show 9pm, all ages, $15 advance/$18 at the door

[NOTE: If you mention that you read about this event in The Lexington Project, you’ll get the advance ticket price on tickets bought at the door.]

Mecca premieres its 1st dance performance in its own space this weekend with Hafla Pura featuring performances by Carolena Nericcio, director of FatChanceBellyDance of San Francisco and Megha director Devyani Dance Company.

This will be Carolena's 2nd trip to Kentucky to teach workshops and perform. Carolena is internationally renowned for her Tribal Pura style of Belly Dance and has mentored many of the biggest innovators in the world of belly dance these days including Rachel Brice and Jill Parker of Ultra Gypsy.

Megha and Caroelna will be teaching workshops at Mecca on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Registration is still open. For more information go to: http://www.meccadance.com/events.html

The evening showcase not only features the beauty of Carolena and Megha, but includes performances by local dance companies: Sabi Diri, Foxfire Hypnotica, and Rakadu Gypsy, as well as Cincinnati's Anaya Gypsy and Taletha from Louisville.

Oh, but this isn't just a showcase of some of the most talented bodies in dance today, this is a gathering for mirthful spirits and minds. Doors open at 8pm with joyous musings spilling forth from Mick Jeffries' Laptop Lounge, spend a moment to take in the atmosphere of Mecca, enjoy a glass of wine, a snack perhaps. (you may BYOB if you like) Show goes up at 9pm, sit back and be captivated. Following the show at 11pm, The Big Maracas will bring the night to its full circle with music and your chance to dance! How could you not dance after a show like that?? – Teresa Tomb
[Full Disclosure: Teresa helped organize this show.]

:: Thursday, September 21 ::
THE SCOURGE OF THE SEA w/PALEO and CHICO FELLINI @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $5

Scourge makes a brief stop at home amidst the chaos of their first national tour. They bring along road buddy Paleo, whom some of you will recognize from recent appearances at the Dame and the Icehouse (think a bouncier, less profound Devendra – still pretty good). http://myspace.com/thescourgeofthesea, http://myspace.com/paleo

:: Friday, September 22 ::
OF MONTREAL w/THEE AMERICAN REVOLUTION @ UK’s Student Center Ballroom
8pm, all ages, FREE – sponsored by WRFL

RFL is too good to us. A FREE show by Of Montreal?!!! The Athens indie poppers have every song set on ‘dance’ these days. Expect an evening of perma-smile and ass shaking. Thee American Revolution = members of the Apples in Stereo, the Blueberries, and Ideal Free Distribution. Very fun. http://myspace.com/ofmontreal

:: Friday, September 22 ::
ANATHALLO w/TIMBRE, WINSTON AUDIO, and WES MEEK
@ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue (just off S. Broadway near Bolivar) – 7pm, all ages, $8

Anathallo = chic-ly shabbily orchestrated pop in the vein of Page France. Check ‘em for yourself at http://myspace.com/anathallo. Rough that they’re going up against the free Of Montreal gig. A worthy option if you’re in a lower energy mode.

:: Saturday, September 23 ::
THE DIALECTICS @ the “Chevy Chase Cares” block party, corner of Euclid and E. High Sts - 8-10pm, all ages, FREE

A block party benefiting the Markey Cancer Research Center at UK (the party’s free, but, I believe, a portion of the proceeds from the vendors at the event will go to the Center). Our organic hip hop friends The Dialectics (augmented by mad sound-scientist Chuck “Chook” Moreland) will be playing from 8-10pm on the corner of Euclid and High Street (in front of one of those gaudy criKet phone joints, if I’m not mistaken). Don’t miss the opportunity to take it to the streets (yup, open containers and all).

:: Saturday, September 23 ::
GLENN KOTCHE w/NELS CLINE @ UK’s Singletary Center for the Arts (corner of Euclid and Rose) - 7:30pm, all ages, $15 students, $17 faculty/staff, $20 general public

Two Wilco-ers. Percussionist Kotche graduated from UK and has been very gracious about making trips back. Guitarist Cline has been a fixture of the west coast experimental rock/free jazz/weirdo scene for what seems like forever. I’m sure it’ll be an interesting show. Wish it weren’t $15-20 for a ticket. Lame. My recommendation: Instead of spending your dollars on this show, save ‘em and go see the (at least) equally interesting experimentation at the Tatsuya Nakatani/Dave Farris gig (see below) at the Icehouse.

:: Wednesday, September 27 ::
TATSUYA NAKATANI w/DAVE FARRIS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell)
8pm, all ages, $3

A meeting of two percussion geniuses – Japanese percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani and local beat master Dave Farris (you know Dave … the man behind the set with Club Dub, The Tall Boys, Catawampus, 10 Ft Pole, Big Fresh, and on and on and on). The first set will be Nakatani solo. The second, an improvised collaboration with Farris. Recommended strongly to anyone who’s enjoyed performances by Matt Weston, Brian Osborne, and Paal Nilssen-Love in recently years. Or, a more local reference, recommended to anyone who’s enjoyed Jordan Munson’s performances (solo and as part of the Karate/Jones Duo).

Bonnie Prince Billy- The Letting Go (Drag City)

The beloved moaner Will Oldham returns with a solid collection of new jams and a new take on the high hills holler idiom that he’s etched out of the southeastern US landscape. One thing’s clear from the beginning, The Letting Go is a really cleanly produced album. With this one Bonny brought a skilled production team into the fold, including Jim White from Faun Fables and a bunch of Icelandics that hold down various string instruments. The results are pretty gorgeous, if it’s cool to use that word. Songs like “Love Comes To Me” and “God’s Small Song” cultivate some really atmospheric moments without sounding too… well… Icelandic. Probably more so than on any other record, Oldham plays around with traditional song structures and timings opting to go the more textural route. The real standout for me was the “untitled” track at the end of the disc. Bonny’s hushed and distant vocals get layered over amorphous percussion and the occasional strike of keys creating a really thick and shimmering ebb and flow. I can’t remember hearing a Bonnie Billy song quite like it. Did he ever do a track with Dirty Three? I’ll have to look around for that.

While this record does separate itself from past releases for being a little more atmospheric, textural, and things, in no way is it a real departure from a lot of the other Bonnie Billy stuff. You’ve still got some deliberate and driving slams like “the seedling,” some small nods to Pete Seger good-times style folk (“no bad news”), and even root delta-blues (“cold & wet”). Another grounding force on the album is the angelic Appalachian background vocals lent to most of the tracks from Faun Fables’ Dawn McCarthy. I hear more Jean Richie than Vahti Bunyan when she plays the role of the sincere and simple rural matriarch, it’s a really refreshing and authentic sound. Overall, it’s great to see the man Bonnie Billy come up with another successful take on “his style” of songwriting... if “his style” is even a measurable thing anymore. – Chris Bush (Note: The B’P’B record hits the streets next Tuesday, September 19.)

Jessica Bailiff- Feels Like Home (Kranky)

Acid-folk chanteuse! "new-weird America!" read all about it Style. If you didn’t know any better you could listen to this record and think it was some private press weirdo hippie drug folk experimental record that was recorded thirty years Ago and now sells for $300 on ebay… but thankfully people like Kranky records are putting these records out these days. Jessica's voice is super pretty, and I get psyched when she starts her songs off with really broken sounding piano notes, only to wash over them with really big strokes of wonder... wow... yeah, that really came out of me... and I'm serious... it must be a more powerful record than I thought. – Chris Bush

Christina Carter - Electrice (Kranky)

Christina Carter has released a dizzying amount of stuff. I wonder if she's even heard it all. But, I've never been disappointed... and her new record "Electrice" is no exception. On the album's four long tracks Christina's vocals seem closer than in other releases, but just out of legibility's reach. Below... she pushes a slow stream of repetitive guitar strums... hypnotic in a real sense. I'm always pretty captivated by how Carter (and Charlambides) think about structre, or really how they try not to think about it too much. It seems almost effortless without being uninteresting. - Chris Bush

Arthur Russell - Springfield (Audika)

I'm super psyched that Audika keeps on resurrecting lost and out of print Arthur Russell stuff. Their newest compilation of the avant-cellist turned outsider disco producer's work titled "Springfield" is out now, and it's pretty great. For fans of Russell you'll probably recognize bits and pieces of his other songs worked into these "new" compositions. For example, the fifth track on this rescord is yet
another take on a song of his that already has a bunch of incarnations "let's go swimming." Also, "The Platform on the Ocean," a track that appeared on the
Russell compilation "Calling out of Context," appears somewhere near the end of the disc. Some people might be interested to know that this compilation has a DFA mix of the Russell track "Springfield," an inclusion that seems sort of strange to me. Russell is reported to have left hundreds of cassette recordings of his work that remain unreleased... so why would they put a DFA remix on this comp. when there's a ton of Arthur Russell stuff waiting to be heard? Weird. - Chris Bush

Chris Herbert- Mezzotint (Kranky)

An apparent master of ambient drone, Chris Herbert’s new record on Kranky seems to take certain notes from past Kranky ambient-itians like Stars Of The Lid, pan sonic, and the Dead Texan without sounding derivitive of any of those artists. His drones are supper dense…not conducive to floating, and his changes are subtle. On some of the coolest tracks there are really splintered scrapes that sound somewhere in between computer glitch and guitar feedback… when stuff is
processed that much I just can’t tell exactly what it is, I'm usually just psyched. Anyways… drone times. - Chris Bush

"Know Your Own - Free Lexington" series

The basic scoop:
The "KYO - Free Lexington" series was conceived as a way of sharing information - namely the where-when-how peeps can find out about all ages happenings in Lexington. When you’re out of the loop, Lex can seem uninviting to peeps under 21. But, if you know where to look, you'll find tons of all ages shows/parties/etc of all different types. Anyway ... the idea was to do a mini-tour of some of the spots where you can find all ages shows around UK's campus and downtown (places like Mecca, The Icehouse, CD Central, and Third Street Stuff Coffee) and to involve as co-sponsors the best information outlets for all ages events (our zine, W Weekly, WRFL). All the shows are FREE. So, don't be shy - come out and get hip to the scene.

** Opening September 11 – “Murmuration of the Filth: New Work by Kurt Gohde” @ Transy’s Morlan Gallery
Transylvania University’s Morlan Gallery opens its new exhibition year on September 11 with “Murmuration of the Filth: New Work by Kurt Gohde.” The exhibit runs through Wednesday, October 11 and will have its opening reception Friday, September 15 during Gallery Hop. “Murmuration …” is a one-man show for Transy professor and local arts acivist/organizer Gohde featuring collaborations with local art stars Michael Goodlett, Vandaveer, Mike Howe and Melissa McEuen. The title of the exhibition Murmuration (the term for a group of starlings) of the Filth (also a starling group name) addresses Gohde’s interest in group and individual thought processes.

“I am fascinated with the difference between mass mentality and maverick individualism,” Gohde said. “For example, when starlings murmur or swarm, they create aerial patterns that make them appear to share a single brain. It can be visually stunning as well as terrifying. And the same visual phenomenon occurs with individuals who are turned completely inward. I think the way we value the resulting imagery, be it birds flying moray patterns or Father Mathias Wernerus’ Holy Ghost Grotto, really gets at how we perceive ourselves as individuals and as part of the murmur.”

The Morlan Gallery is open weekdays, noon to 5 p.m. and by special appointment. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

ISWHAT?! cd release party w/RAOUL BELMANS @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $6

Heard Michael Powell (aka our beloved Mikey P) on RFL Tuesday evening talking about this show. In describing ISWHAT?!, he said something like “their kinda like the Roots – with the live instruments and jazz influence – but it’s more of an avant garde jazz influence than what the Roots have.” (Sorry, Mikey, if I’ve butchered the wording. Hope I got the gist of it correct.) The description’s a pretty good place to start if you’re not familiar with the group. The Cincy sax/bass/beatboxer-mc trio (sometime duo (beatboxer-mc/sax), sometime quartet (beatboxer-mc/tenor sax/baritone sax/bass)) has knocked me out over their 6 (8? 10?) trips to Lexington since 2001. Their flexibility is amazing. They’ve played on bills with spoken word artists, and killed. They’ve played on bills with straight-up ecstatic fire jazz groups, and killed. They’ve played on bills with electronica djs, and killed. And, they opened for KRS-One, and killed. ISWHAT?! always seems to be pushing toward the next, but the rub is that they make this leap to the future seem like a natural progression. It’ll be fun to see where they’re/we’re headed now. http://iswhat.net

:: Saturday, September 2 ::
KING KONG w/THE SMACKS and RONNIE MACK & THE I’LL BEAT YOUR BACK OUT BAND
@ Club 21, 1481 S. Shelby St (corner of Barrett), Louisville
9:30pm, (guessing) ages 21+, $ = no clue

One of the benefits of publishing late – great last minute news. This just in - our glitter-billy friends The SMACKS! are playing the opening night of Club 21 with goofy/genius Louisville legends King Kong (see the Drag City records catalog for your history – I’m partial to ‘Me Hungry’ ‘cause that’s what was hap’nin’ was I was comin’ up). Man, that’s gonna be fun.

JCE follows at 1pm. The party doubles as the kickoff to the “Know Your Own – Free Lexington” series sponsored by Action Arts, WRFL, W Weekly, and, us, The Lexington Project. BALKAN BEAT BOX @ Southgate House (Newport, KY)
8pm doors, 8:30pm show, ages 18+, $10 advance, $12 at the door

Dance!, fool, Dance!!

Dubbed, “the dance party of the new millennium” by Paste magazine, Balkan Beat Box delivers the complete intensity of Antibalas with an Eastern European twist. Songs come fully injected with all the delirious joy of a Bah Mitzvah turned outrageous Rave party. Isn’t it about time you danced to a 9/8 rhythm? Western minds expand whilst booties shimmy, shake, and bop.

I say, Isn’t this just what you need on a Wednesday night?

THE HIGH WATER MARKS w/JASON ZAVALA and KELLI SHAY HICKS @ Mecca, 451 Chair Ave
8pm, all ages, FREE – part of the “Know Your Own – Free Lexington” series

The High Water Marks are one of Lexington's favorite pop bands and they're back. They never actually went anywhere but the scene felt a bit abandoned by them nevertheless. Until last week the band hadn't played a proper HWM show in months. Though they had to work out a few kinks onstage at The Dame last week the band is still tight and Jim Lindsay's drumming is as mesmerizing as ever! Lindsay's drumming and keyboard playing skills are really taken advantage of these days with him playing both instruments simultaneously on as many as four songs. HWM recently completed their 2nd album and are currently looking for a new label; more bran spankin' new songs from this effort should undoubtedly be expected.

Jason Zavala will be playing his quirky, innovative Elephant tunes as well. Though Zavala now represents the band as a solo act it doesn't detract from the rocking of the original songs. In fact, he could probably perform all of his songs a cappella and it would be equally as intriguing.

This show is the first of the upcoming "Know Your Own – Free Lexington" series. Its goal is to introduce old and new folks to the music scene and specifically to places where free music is available and all ages are welcome. So, stay tuned for more exciting shows like this one.

The basic intro: Kelli Shay Hicks, a native Midwesterner now based in Nashville, TN, plays guitar, autoharp and sings. She has played with Jana Hunter, Marissa Nadler and other people who I haven't heard of but I’m sure they are great musicians as well.

My words: I and many others have found ourselves immersed in this whole folk phenomena. I’m not sure when all of this started or when it might end and begin something completely new, but for now melodic guitar and simple voice interests me. Kelli Shay's music definitely falls into this Midwestern folk tone but has more of the old tape deck, corner of your bedroom, first take, honesty about it. She doesn't hide behind layers and layers of produced tracks, or a full choir of her little folk brothers and sisters singing about Chinese Children; it’s her own take on this whole folk music thing and its straight from her sweet little heart.

:::::::::::::: KNOW THE NEW: WHAT’S NEW IN THE PLAYBOX AT WRFL ::::::::::::::::::::::::

Alright, my man Chris got swamped with school and other responsibilities. Hopefully, he’ll be back hipping us to the new junk in RFL’s trunk in the next issue. In the meantime, here are a couple of my favorite things (not all very new) from the RFL playbox:

1) Yo La Tengo’s new record “I’m Not Afraid of You And I’ll Beat Your Ass”
You can download two tracks at http://yolatengo.com/audio.html. Though my favorite track on the record (after two or three listens, mind you) – “Mr. Tough” – isn’t among them, they’re definitely worth grabbing to hold you over until the record drops on Sept. 12. (If you’re interested in hearing “Mr. Tough,” let me know and I’ll email you an mp3. Be forewarned, the track’s cutesy Yo La Tengo, not blissed-out jammy Yo La Tengo.)

2) Chad VanGaalen’s record “Skelliconnection” (Sub Pop)
I’ve listened to the opening track “Flower Gardens” six or seven times today. Then, I discovered the animated video Van Gaalen created for the song on Sub Pop’s website. Awesome! Here’s the link - http://media.subpop.com/downloads/free/Flower_Gardens387.mov. On a related note, he was supposed to be in Cincy next Wednesday (Sept. 6) at Alchemize, but I checked the bar’s website and it said they’ve closed. Trying to get the scoop about where the show might be going down now. No luck so far. Anyone got the info?

3) Be Your Own Pet’s self-titled record (XL/Ecstatic Peace)
I just started dj’ing again, so this record’s prolly been in the playbox all summer without my knowledge (Lord knows their name’s been making the rounds for that long and longer). Anyway, it’s rough, fast, noisy, fun rock from Nashville. My favorite jam thus far is “Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle.” You can find that one and a few others on the band’s MySpace site - http://myspace.com/beyourownpetmusic.

4) Supersystem’s new record “A Million Microphones” (Touch And Go)
OK, so this record isn’t in the playbox (hopefully it will be soon), but I’ve had a hard-on for these guys since back in the day when they were (the more experimental) El Guapo. The Guapo rocked Mecca circa 2003, right as they were deciding to make the transition into this dance-rock genius. Their last record, “Always Never Again” was amazing. This one may be better. Check out the jam o’ jams “White Light/White Light” at http://www.touchandgorecords.com/video/3684.mov (yeah, it’s another fun video).

and, lastly, completely unrelated to RFL, my favorite YouTube.com clip from the last month – an animated, rap ode to George Washington (yeah, you’ve prolly already seen it – it’s been widely circulated – but if not, get on it!
5) Cox and Combes - “George Washington” - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc9y5ayeeb4.
