TLP February 1, 2008

A half-finished Lex Pro sans Announcements. I’ll get around to a full issue soon, but I wanted to make sure folks knew about the haps for the weekend. Go see Six Organs of Admittance with Mick Turner and Caves at the Dame tonight (or, if you’re in the mood for a road-trip, bust it to Louisville for an evening of old-school soul with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings). Tomorrow, it’s the return of Hair Police at the Void or rockabilly at the Dame.
Hope all are well.
Luv, Ross

Bike Events
The full bike scoop is at http://www.lexrides.com.

:: Sundays this Winter :: Bike Polo games are still happening Sunday afternoons weather permitting. Games typically start mid-afternoon ~2-3 @ Woodland Park between the pool and skatepark. Bikes and mallets available if you don't have your own - everyone welcome. Check the lexrides.com forum for weekly details.

:: Tuesday, February 5 :: Mardi Gras Bike Parade. Get festive and have some fun on yer bike! Tuesday Feb 5th is Fat Tuesday. Meet at Thoroughbred Park (Corner of Main and Midland) at 8:15. Ride will be less than 4 miles through and around downtown. Finish at Gumbo YaYa's (Broadway and Virginia Ave). YaYa's will be stocked with plenty of BBC, Abita and King Cake. Decorate your bike, your self, and bring some beads to throw. For those who rallied last year on an impromptu gathering I think we had a great time riding around downtown in UK Basketball game traffic. Go here a few photos of what you missed – http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?q=mardi&w=79494808%40N00&m=pool

:: Sunday, February 10 :: OPERATION LOVERBOY alleycat race. Sunday, February 10th, Kenwick Park (corner of Owsley and Menifee). Registration:1:30 PM. Racing commences: 2:05 PM. Categories:Male/Female, Male/Male, and Female/Female. You'll need a digital camera (camera phone will work), a cell phone, a pen and a valentine. You must race with a valentine so some of you lonely folk need to start looking now if you expect to find a date in the next 3 weeks! If you arrive alone, you'll be paired with a valentine. For more information, visit www.lexrides.com.

:: Friday, February 1 ::
SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE w/MICK TURNER and CAVES @ The Dame
7pm, ages 21+, $8

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE has/have largely been lumped in with the freak-folk camp, but make no mistake: his music is devoid of the faux-rustic, post-ironic, nostalgia-infected posturing that marks their ilk. If such a title existed outside of that video game everyone loves, Chasny would be the Guitar Hero of our generation, a shredder who is less indebted to Fahey and Basho than Mascis and Haino: restrained, seething, searching lines that never forsake melody for technique. Sure, he crafts a hell of an introspective psychedelic lullaby, but that's just icing on the cake, or maybe just another cake stacked on top of the original cake. [Ed. Note: Chasny is joined on this tour by Elisa Ambrogio of Magik Markers.]

MICK TURNER used to jam with the Dirty Three, which will mean a lot to anyone within that Imagined Golden Isosceles of Post Rock whose points are Chicago, Louisville, and Lexington (less for its contributions--marimbas and tape echo units and people who actually know how to play shit be sparse in these parts--than its zeal for the form).

CAVES play(s) tense, disorienting psych(iatric) noise with a weird grunge/folk vibe. Some of the most intensely personal and beautiful this city has coughed up yet, and well worth sacrificing a number of brain cells for.
- Trevor Tremaine

:: Friday, February 1 ::
SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS @ Headliners (Louisville)
9pm, ages 18+, $12

Sharon Jones = funky soul sister number one. Backed by her trusty co-conspirators, the Dap-Kings (you’ve heard them whether you know it or not – they served as Amy Winehouse’s backing band for her jammy jam “Rehab”), Jones is the real deal. Even if you can’t make the show, do yourself a favor this Friday – go to http://www.myspace.com/sharonjonesandthedapkings and listen to “100 Days, 100 Nights.” More info at http://www.daptonerecords.com.

:: Saturday, February 2 ::
HAIR POLICE w/TIGHT LEATHER, and HANDICAPPER HORNS @ The Void, 518 E. High St
8pm, all ages, $3

First Lexington show by our noisy friends Hair PoPo in more than a year. They’re joined by Handicapper Horns (John Olson of Wolf Eyes/Dead Machines with special guest Sara O’Keefe of Eyes and Arms of Smoke/ARA – described in a recent email from our friend Robert Beatty as “mutant slow horns”) and Tight Leather (the hottest band in Lexington right now – to steal another of Robot Booty’s descriptions, “psyched out skate rock”). Gnarly times indeed. Sites, sounds, info - http://www.gnarlytimes.com (Hair Police), http://www.geocities.com/americantapes/ (Handicapper Horns), http://myspace.com/tightleather1.

:: Saturday, February 2 ::
LEE ROCKER w/CROWN ELECTRIC @ The Dame
7pm, ages 21+, $10

Rockabilly fun with Stray Cats bassist Lee Rocker. Don’t be surprised if Mike Tevis and Lexington rockabilly legends Crown Electric steal the show.
