TLP April 30, 2009

Peoples,
Hot haps this Derby weekend-extended. Hit the opening of “Fair Enough” at Land of Tomorrow (LOT) on Friday. Sleep late Sunday on a pillow of your Derby winnings, then head to Woodland Park for the Park Daze festival. Disco nap, then hit Windy & Carl and Benoit Pioulard back at LOT. And, finish the exhausting weekend+ with a firebreathing, FREE free-jazz show at the amazing Red Mile Round Barn.

Hope all are well. Thanks to Mickles for the Max Tundra preview and to Danny Mayer (by way of Beth Connors Manke) for his piece on the Centre Point Parque Kickball game.
Luv, Ross

** Fri/May 1 - Opening reception – “FAIR ENOUGH” at Land of Tomorrow
New exhibit at LOT (527 E. 3rd St – near the intersection of 3rd and Midland Ave/Winchester Rd – http://www.lotlex.com).
Here’s the scoop …
April 29-May 5 (12noon-5pm each day)
Opening Reception, May 1st - 7pm
"FAIR ENOUGH". A phrase that is simultaneously a critical antecedent, and a preface to those things one may have neglected to consider or simply ignored when producing a piece or body of work. This is the "Ok, However..." resting at the core of the artistic process. Through various means and media including but not limited to painting, printmaking, fiber, iron casting, photography, video, and installation this exhibition displays the results of seven artists' - Mallory Dover, Natasha Giles, Perry Hooks, Willie Robertson, Bill Santen, Travis Shaffer, and Melissa Van Sandt - deliberate and intimate relationship with "

** Sun/May 3 – Community Velo Swap @ The Void
From our buddy Brian Turner – “On Sunday, May 3rd (the day after the Derby) we will be organizing another Community Velo Swap as one of the very first events to get the month of Bike Lexington started. The event will be held in the front parking lot of The Void Skate Shop on High Street, between Kentucky Ave and Woodland Ave. from 11am until 4pm.

Last year's Velo Swap was a huge success, and we're hoping to have an even better turnout this time around. The Swap is open to the public, and is free. Participants are encouraged to bring anything bike-related to sell or trade, and each person is responsible for their own set-up. If you want to bring a box of parts, or even complete bikes to sell, bring them! There will be a few tables available, but feel free to bring whatever you feel will help you arrange your goods. It is also very helpful to others if you tag or mark your items ahead of time with prices, so people will know how much your asking for them.”

** Saturdays – Lexington Farmers Market is back!
Go get some! I picked up asparagus, new potatoes, and green garlic last weekend. My week has been the yummier for it. Check http://lexingtonfarmersmarket.com/ for the full scoop.

** Through April 30th ? – Photography by Brett Hisey @ Alfalfa
Finally made it down for breakfast at the ‘falf to check Brett’s exhibit. It’s a striking collection of nature pics (the light-box pieces were my faves). Think it’s gonna stay up until Sunday, so bust it to Alfalfa, 141 E. Main St, for yummy food and to peep Brett’s great photos.

by Danny Mayer ("head honcho at the soon to be running North of Center newspaper" - BCM)

Friday 24 April 2009
Phoenix Park, Lexington

Big Blue Calls Game; City Players and Spectators Call Foul

North of Center News Bureau

At 5:29 PM, between 10 and 12 kickballers stormed the N. Limestone
entrance to the Center Pointe Public Yards to play a game of kickball.
Their game was abruptly stopped 4 rolls in by three bike cops and one
good ol' fashioned police cruiser. Under the eyes of between 40 and
60 would-be ballers, interlopers, kite-flyers, baby-walkers, bikers,
and various other all around fun-loving riff-raff, the police quickly
hustled off the sensible players.

By 5:35 PM the police bikers achieved their goal of forcing the
players to desist and remove themselves to the sidewalk of Phoenix
Park on North Limestone. Though rumors abounded as to the reason for
the players forced removal—one participant opined that the rival team,
comprised of fat cats from Lexington’s business establishment, had
forfeited the game and only sent the cops as a friendly gesture to
inform the players; yet another speculated that the players themselves
deemed CenterPointe's rocky grounds “not yet kickball-ready” and only
called in the cops for official verification—it appeared that this was
yet another clear Webb Brothers LLC declaration of its right to tear,
muddy, and section off the whole of Lexington, one failure at a time,
at the expense of the rest of us.

After gathering together for a group photo, taken by no less than 6
local photographers, the group milled around on the corner of Main and
N. Limestone for the next half hour and briefly cheered on the passing
bikers of Critical Mass. Several revelers had a seedball throwing
contest; some kickballers redirected into a spirited game of dodgeball
in the park; another group started flying a kite; at least one person
crossed Main for a dip in the fountain; and everyone laughed and
jabbered and generally lapped in the sun and the hope that maybe next
week we'll be able to play that damn kickball game.

::::::::: Monday, April 27 – Monday, May 4 :::::::::::

>> Thursday, April 30th
Max Tundra opening for Junior Boys @ The Dame > 9pm, ages 21+, $10

Max Tundra sounds, by all accounts, exactly like caffeine. Add to that impossibility the fact that his scalpel assembly of blips-n-gleeps often add up to delightful, joyful little ditties that are 3.14x more infectious than they should be. Also, the young man is quite dancer, according to my friend Yoo Toob. – Mick Jeffries

>> Sunday, May 3rd
"Park Daze" featuring Tiny Fights, The Swells, Caboladies, The Tallboys, Everyone Lives Everyone Wins, Warmer Milks, and Attempt @ Woodland Park > 12noon-6pm, all ages welcome, FREE!

A free, all-day festival organized by Reid Small of The Void Skateshop. The event features a wide assortment of local music, free food, skateboard competitions, and much more. A great reason to spend yr Sunday afternoon at the park. More info at http://myspace.com/thevoidskateshop.

>> Sunday, May 3rd
Windy & Carl w/Benoit Pioulard, Caboladies, and Lambs Laughter @ Land of Tomorrow (LOT), 357 E. 3rd St - near the intersection of 3rd & Winchester Rd/Midland Ave > 8:30pm, all ages welcome, $5 > sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

A lovely bill of Michigan dream/drone pop and psychedelic Lexington noise-scapes. Take note of the venue change - the show will go down at the new art space, Land of Tomorrow, on E. 3rd St. A very cool spot. More info/sounds at http://myspace.com/windyandcarl, Benoit Pioulard on Myspace, and http://myspace.com/caboladies.

>> Monday, May 4th
Peter Brotzmann / Eric Revis / Nasheet Waits Trio @ The Red Mile Round Barn, 1200 Red Mile Rd - near the intersection of Broadway & Virginia Ave/Red Mile Rd > 8pm, all ages welcome, FREE > sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM and the Jazz Arts Foundation

The Outside the Spotlight jazz and improvised music series returns with ecstatic free-jazz from one of the genre's founding fathers, fire-breathing German saxophonist Peter Brotzmann. For this rare US performance (one of only six or seven dates on this tour), Brotzmann is joined by bassist Eric Revis (best known as Branford Marsalis' go-to bassman) and percussionist Nasheet Waits (son of American jazz legend Freddie Waits; know for his work with pianists Andrew Hill and Jason Moran). A hot show in a uniquely Kentucky venue. Don't miss it. [Note: If you're not familiar with The Red Mile Round Barn, you are in for a treat - a great place to see a show, with plenty of free, secure parking directly adjacent to the venue.] More info/sounds at http://myspace.com/peterbrotzmann. [Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

TLP April 24, 2009

My apologies to you, dear Lex Pro friends, and to Eli and Saraya, who put together this issue last weekend. I've been having computard problems since my return from Germany and just couldn't seem to get it out. Figured it might still be valuable belatedly. Hope so.

In addition to everything Eloise and Sa-Riot line out below, be sure to check ELandF Gallery's "The Book Reader" around downtown Lex today (more info at http://elandfgallery.blogspot.com/) and head out UK's Reynolds Bldg tonight (6-10pm) for the closing reception for Dawn Graham's BFA show, "[re]constructions" (more info at http://www.dawngraham.com).

Lastly, a clear-your-schedule/save-the-date heads-up - these two are coming up quick > Sunday, May 3rd Windy & Carl w/Benoit Pioulard and more @ Land of Tomorrow ... and Monday, May 4th Peter Brotzmann / Eric Revis / Nasheet Waits Trio @ The Red Mile Round Barn (FREE!!!).

Hope all are well.
Luv, Ross

Happy Monday, Lexington!
Just a couple more days of rain this week, then the rest will be sunny, sunny, sunny.
Happy Birthday to Shanna Sanders!

** EARTH DAYS IN THE BLUEGRASS 2009**
Sponsored by UK Residence Life Sustainability and UK Greenthumb, EDBG is a month-long celebration of “sustainability, responsible global citizenship, and the power of local action.” Every new day brings events working towards the promotion of our community. Here are some of the highlights for this week:

For more info on local food, visit www.kyproud.com.
> Wed/Apr 22 EARTH DAY! - Celebrate all day long with various events on the UK Campus. There's an Earth Day Fair at the Student Center Patio/Free Speech area from 10-3, featuring tye-dying, book-making, and various other fun activities. Group Bicycle Ride/Still We Ride Film Screening - Hop on your bike and come out for a fun ride designed to better acclamate riders with the rules of the road and the general idea of using your wheels for transportation. Help demonstrate that bikes aren't blocking traffic - they ARE traffic. The ride starts at 5:30 from Woodland Park, and should end up at the Student Center for a 7:00 screening of Still We Ride at Worsham Theater. This documentary captures the spirit of the famous Critical Mass ride in New York City on the eve of the 2004 Republican National Convention, as well as giving a history of the ride's origins in San Francisco over 10 years ago.
> Sat/Apr 25 Arbor Day at The Arboretum - Celebrate your favorite trees by hanging out with them at The Arboretum from 10-2. There will be all sorts of fun activities for people of all ages, and it's all free! Get out and have some fun in the forest!

For more info, and for a complete rundown of EDBG events, visit their website at www.earthdaysinthebluegrass.org

** Tues/Apr 21 - Still Flyin's new LP Never Gonna Touch the Ground hits the shelves of record stores everywhere! Maybe you should pick up a copy at CD Central? Then at least, whatever the rest of your week looks like, your ears and heart will be thoroughly pleased.

** Wed/Apr 22 - Holler Poets Series #12 at Al's Bar
Featuring poetry from Donna Ison and Jude Lally, and music by Warren Byrom (of the Swells and Big Maracas). 8pm, FREE.

** Sat/April 25 – Lexington Farmers Market in its NEW LOCATION
What better way to spend a Saturday morning than finding the best tasting veggies and supporting local farmers at the same time! The weather forecast is calling for sunny and 80 degrees, so there really isn't much of an excuse. The Farmers Market just made the move down to Cheapside Park and it really couldn't be lovelier. Full scoop at http://lexingtonfarmersmarket.com/.

** DorkbotLex is putting on a Green series, focusing on ideas, inventions, technologies, electronics focusing on sustainability, and is looking for presenters. If you’re interested, get in touch with Senom Yalcin by May 15.

(for a slightly extended version of the week's haps, often including side notes, pictures and links, as well as for links to venues and other culture/music/art resources/blogs, visit me at blueline.)

It's gonna be really hard topping off last weekend as far as overwhelming amounts of things to do happening at once, but this week makes a pretty good go at it...

Tues, 4/21: Takeshi Kitano's The Blind Swordsman Zatoichi at the Kentucky Theatre in conjunction w/ the samurai film fest, which goes till Thursday (with Ghost Dog on Wed; Sukiyaki Western Django on Thurs).

Wed, 4/22:

* Earth Days in the Bluegrass: Big Fresh, Downtown County Band, Spooky Q's @ Memorial Ampitheatre (right behind Memorial Hall). The event also features poetry readings by outgoing state poet laureate Jane Gentry Vance, Bianca Spriggs and Chuck Clenney.
* Holler Poets Series #11, feat. Donna Ison and Jude Lally at Al's Bar (Two very different and equally fascinating readers), followed by music by fantastic local singer/guitarist Warren Byrom of the Swells. All ages, FREE.
* Godd w/ Battlecry, Pslychosis at the Skylight Lounge (in Main Street Live, across the volleyball court and up the stairs from the Dame). Many of you might also know Godd as Nick Kidd's band. Fun times, heavy, theatrical circus rock (?)....I hear influences of Primus, Ween, Mr. Bungle...but that's just me....21 +, $5ish cover

Thurs, 4/23:

* The Swells w/ Slow Claw and !!Girlie Girl!! Burlesque Show at the Green Lantern. Can't seem to find much info about the burlesque show, but it's about damn time Lexington got another burlesque show, and I couldn't possibly think of a better venue.
* Wale w/ UCB, Colin Munroe, Loose Change w/ Nate FX, and The US Band at Old Tarr Distillery (903 Manchester St.). I'm going to be honest, I know nothing about these hip hop bands, except that I did read that Washington D.C.-based Wale released a Seinfeld themed mixtape last year (The MixTape About Nothing). Intrigued. Sponsored by WRFL and Oneness287.com, a new-ish "streetwear boutique" on North Limestone (near the corner of Maxwell...check out their site...) All ages/$5.
* Tiny Fights (my new favorite Lex band - heavy psychelectonica dance jams), F.D.U. ("psych-garage-kid-rock" - as Jamie says Reid would say), Street Gnar (heard a bit on last week's WRFL Live - really nice space guitar loops w/eerie vocals from Case of Jovantaes) @ Derby City Espresso in Louisville. They want you there. You want to be there. Go.

Fri, 4/24:

* Fourth Friday - closing night of PaintPresent, featuring live bluegrass form the Blind Corn Liquor Pickers, food, schmooze, art, the works @ The Loudoun House.
* Latin Heat & Special guest @ Al's Sidecar (formerly known as Cheater's). Latin heat = new Lex band featuring Matt Gibson, Andy Stith, and Drew.
* Share the road! Group Bike Ride - 5:30 p.m. at Woodland Park in conjunction w/ Earth Days in the Bluegrass. Ride ends at Worsham Theatre on UK's campus for a screening of Still we Ride, a documentary that captures an '04 Critica Mass bike ride in New York that ending in arrests and choas three days before the Republican National Convention.

Sat, 4/25:
Big Fresh will be performing at The Dame in celebration of the national release of Big Fresh Forever. Word on the street is they will be playing two sets with lots of new songs.

P.S. Pretty sure Big Fresh had the egg-breaking-in-your-hand picture going on aeons before Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out with their new album cover...

Honorable mentions of the week:
Thurs, 4/23 - Of Montreal @ Madison Theatre (Cincy)
Thurs, 4/23 - The Instruction w/ Chico Fellini and Chemic @ Pour Haus (Lou)
Thurs, 4/23 - African guitar great Habib Koite will perform "Music from Mali: In the Mouth of a Crocodile" @ Berea College Phelps-Stokes Auditorium.
Thurs 4/23 - Disco Biscuits @ Headliner's (Lou)
Fri, 4/24- Peter, Pjorn & John @ Southgate House (Newport)

TLP April 6, 2009

{This is the debut mailing to The Lexington Project Google group list. If you're interested in subscribing to the mailings, go to http://groups.google.com/group/the-lexington-project and do that shit!}

Hey, peeps.
We’re back! It’s a wonderful time to be in Lexington. I know I’ll miss a few things as I try to round back into aggregating shape, so please email me a heads-up if I’ve let something slide. I can always add it to the blog. Here goes …

Take an apartment on the northside for the week – you’re gonna wanna stay close to Al’s all week. Go see Ariel & the Vivian Girls there tonight. Head back Thursday for what will be the Spring’s biggest party – Beaux Arts can’t hold a candle to the fabulous fun of Still Flyin’. Shower away your party stank and head back again on Friday to support the new Qahmics? Collective and share a sex apple with The Smacks!, Attempt, and Carl Calm. Be sure to check Saraya Brewer’s “Blueline Bluepicks” below (and visit her Blueline blog) – she caught a couple things I had slept on … and when we make the same pick, you KNOW you gots to get out. (Thanks, Saraya.)

Welcome back Farmers’ Market! Happy 10th anniversary to Teresa and Mecca!

Hope all are well.
Luv, Ross

** Wed/April 8 –The Beehive Collective’s “The True Cost of Coal: Tales of Ants and Energy in Appalachia”
** Thurs/April 9 – “An Evening with the Mountain Keepers”

Earthdays in the Bluegrass presents this pair of FREE events.
> Wednesday at 7pm, in room 203 of the UK Student Center, a dose of art & activism from The Beehive Design Collective, internationally known for their collaboratively produced graphics campaigns. Here’s a description of “The True Cost of Coal” from a flyer on the group’s website – “With huge portable murals of collaboratively produced illustrations and an engaging narrative, the bees will take you on an interactive visual tour of the connections between Mountaintop Removal, climate change, the “American Dream,” and the struggle for justice in Appalachia and throughout the world.” You can find more info about the collective and their myriad campaigns at http://www.beehivecollective.org.

> Thursday from 6-10pm, in the UK Student Center Ballroom, it’s “An Evening with the Mountain Keepers.” From the Mountain Keepers website - “The Evening celebrates the way that public writing and grassroots community action work together to ensure a healthy, participatory democracy. Learn about Appalachia's endangered culture and its uneasy relationship with coal, and experience how journalists, poets, speakers, artists, and musicians use creative activism to make their voices heard.” The event, which will include readings by Eric Reece, Frank X. Walker, Judy Sizemore, Silas House, among others, is FREE and open to the public. More info at http://www.uky.edu/~afma222/MountainKeepers.htm. (Note: Earthdays in the Bluegrass has an entire month of interesting events planned. Go to http://www.earthdaysinthebluegrass.org for the full scoop.)

** Mon/April 6 - 1st Monday @ Natasha's- Mecca Student Dance Night and Open Floor Dancing
** Fri/April 10 – Mecca 10th Anniversary potluck dance celebration @ Mecca
** Sat/April 11 – Free day of dance and drumming classes @ Mecca

Three chances to celebrate Mecca’s 10th anniversary. Tonight, their monthly 1st Monday student performance at Natasha’s. This time ‘round, the gig is in Natasha’s Prop’s Boutique at the corner of Main & Esplanade (instead of in the restaurant proper). There’ll be free food and plenty of dancing fun for everyone. Friday, April 10 – the actual anniversary date of the studio’s opening - Mecca (451 Chair Ave – off S.Broadway) hosts a potluck dance party starting at 8pm. All ages are welcome to the very informal gathering. Then, Saturday, Mecca is offering a FREE day of drumming and dance classes. From 11:30am-12:30pm, there’ll be a free class teaching basic technique of dumbek drumming. (Note: you’ll need to bring your own drum) From 12:30-2pm, it’s basic belly dance with live drumming. An aside - Teresa Tomb’s work with Mecca has been a huge inspiration to me. The many ways she’s found to bring the community together in appreciation of dance and one another awe me. Yeah, she’s pretty cool. If you haven’t read Kakie Urch’s profile of Mecca in the most recent ACE, pick it up.

** Fri/April 10 – Art Opening – “Deliverables” by Bureau V @ L.O.T. (Land of Tomorrow)
This Friday at 7pm, L.O.T. (Land of Tomorrow - 527 E 3rd St, near the intersection with Midland Ave) presents an opening reception for the exhibit “Deliverables” by Bureau V. Here the description from their recent announcement – “DELIVERABLES presents four large scale drawings from the New York based architecture studio Bureau V. As a response to the waning use-value of the physical drawing in contemporary architectural practice, these documents seek to establish new values for the architectural deliverable outside the functions of presentation and construction. Each drawing is an original document created through processes such as computer-generated graphic content, hand drawing, applique, painting, and collage. … Bureau V specializes in the design and production of architecture that engages in beauty, culture, and economy. The studio's expertise lies in a range of work from cultural institutions to large commercial buildings to performance and new media installations.” The show will be up from April 10 through the 15. Gallery hours are 10am-5pm, Tuesday through Friday. More info at http://www.lotlex.com/.

ARIEL PINK’s HAUNTED GRAFFITI w/VIVIAN GIRLS @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone
doors 8:30pm/show starts 10pm, all ages, $5 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

No FreeKY Fest this year, but I’d argue that the station’s equaling, perhaps even besting, last year’s festival with a string of outstanding shows this semester. Already we’ve seen visits by Mahjongg, Women, and Beach House, now Ariel Pink and Vivian Girls! And, there are more on the horizon – Windy & Carl w/Benoit Pioulard, the Brotzmann-Revis-Waits Trio, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, just to name three. The station is spoiling us.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti = warped and hazy home-recorded pop songs. His last Lex appearance opening for Animal Collective at ArtsPlace, had him solo on-stage meandering around the stage singing over top of backing tracks. (I loved it.) I believe, Ariel’s put together a full band for this tour. Vivian Girls = three Brooklyn gals making fast and fuzzy, melodic pop reminiscent of Black Tambourine, 14 Iced Bears, and Rocketship. Show up early. This one may sell out.

>> Thursday, April 9

STILL FLYIN’ w/GOLDENROD and MATT DUNCAN @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone
8pm, all ages, FREE – sponsored by The Embrace & WRFL 88.1FM

Still Flyin’ is a pure party band fond of poppy, reggae-inflected songs about smoking weed and hamjammin’. Typically performing with 10-20 members, the band is a Bay Area indie rock supergroup led by Sean Rawls of Masters of the Hemisphere and including members of the Aislers Set, Track Star, Red Pony Clock, and Je Suis France (live, the group has included Jens Lekman and members of Versus and Architecture in Helsinki). Expect wonderful silliness. “F*ck the Stress” and come let them “bicycle kick your worries away.” (Check out their video for “Rope Burn” – directed by Isobel Knowles of Architecture in Helsinki – at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQKbmhrEwg4.) http://myspace.com/stillflyin

Goldenrod has been described as, “A burgoo of outsider artist moonshinning music that hybridizes electro, psychedelia, pre-'74 funk, neo-soul with dark tinges of Appalachia.” Check them for yourself at http://www.myspace.com/paintingsforprophets. Matt Duncan is one of my favorite songwriters. Expect some of the catchiest, bounciest pop you’ll ever hear. And, at this show, Matt debuts a horn section! http://myspace.com/mattduncanmusic. Don’t miss it.

DARRYL COOK w/ROB THEAKSTON @ C.P.R, behind Al’s at the corner of 6th and Limestone – 7pm, all ages, $3
+ and +
QAHMICS? Con(Cert) featuring THE SMACKS! with J.GLENN, CARL CALM, and ATTEMPT @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone – 10pm, all ages, $5

The Charles Mansion/Fact House crowd takes over the corner of 6th and Limestone. Don’t know what Daryl and Rob have planned for the C.P.R. gig, but I’m sure it’ll be noisy, out, and awesome. The show afterwards at Al’s is a benefit to raise money for Andrew Crawford’s Qahmics? Anthology of local underground/independent comics. I’m gonna be lazy and fall back on Trevor Tremaine’s (of Attempt) descriptions from the Facebook invite (he’s smarter than me anyway) – “ATTEMPT=prog-pop primitivism, guitar/drum machine/vox. Carl Calm=sunglasses music from LSD Santa Claus. The Smacks=the original mess!!! Featuring astronaut/senator J. Glenn.”
