TLP April 6, 2009

{This is the debut mailing to The Lexington Project Google group list. If you're interested in subscribing to the mailings, go to http://groups.google.com/group/the-lexington-project and do that shit!}

Hey, peeps.
We’re back! It’s a wonderful time to be in Lexington. I know I’ll miss a few things as I try to round back into aggregating shape, so please email me a heads-up if I’ve let something slide. I can always add it to the blog. Here goes …

Take an apartment on the northside for the week – you’re gonna wanna stay close to Al’s all week. Go see Ariel & the Vivian Girls there tonight. Head back Thursday for what will be the Spring’s biggest party – Beaux Arts can’t hold a candle to the fabulous fun of Still Flyin’. Shower away your party stank and head back again on Friday to support the new Qahmics? Collective and share a sex apple with The Smacks!, Attempt, and Carl Calm. Be sure to check Saraya Brewer’s “Blueline Bluepicks” below (and visit her Blueline blog) – she caught a couple things I had slept on … and when we make the same pick, you KNOW you gots to get out. (Thanks, Saraya.)

Welcome back Farmers’ Market! Happy 10th anniversary to Teresa and Mecca!

Hope all are well.
Luv, Ross

:::::::::::::::::::::::: Announcements :::::::::::::::::::::::::::

** Wed/April 8 –The Beehive Collective’s “The True Cost of Coal: Tales of Ants and Energy in Appalachia”
** Thurs/April 9 – “An Evening with the Mountain Keepers”

Earthdays in the Bluegrass presents this pair of FREE events.
> Wednesday at 7pm, in room 203 of the UK Student Center, a dose of art & activism from The Beehive Design Collective, internationally known for their collaboratively produced graphics campaigns. Here’s a description of “The True Cost of Coal” from a flyer on the group’s website – “With huge portable murals of collaboratively produced illustrations and an engaging narrative, the bees will take you on an interactive visual tour of the connections between Mountaintop Removal, climate change, the “American Dream,” and the struggle for justice in Appalachia and throughout the world.” You can find more info about the collective and their myriad campaigns at http://www.beehivecollective.org.

> Thursday from 6-10pm, in the UK Student Center Ballroom, it’s “An Evening with the Mountain Keepers.” From the Mountain Keepers website - “The Evening celebrates the way that public writing and grassroots community action work together to ensure a healthy, participatory democracy. Learn about Appalachia's endangered culture and its uneasy relationship with coal, and experience how journalists, poets, speakers, artists, and musicians use creative activism to make their voices heard.” The event, which will include readings by Eric Reece, Frank X. Walker, Judy Sizemore, Silas House, among others, is FREE and open to the public. More info at http://www.uky.edu/~afma222/MountainKeepers.htm. (Note: Earthdays in the Bluegrass has an entire month of interesting events planned. Go to http://www.earthdaysinthebluegrass.org for the full scoop.)

** Mon/April 6 - 1st Monday @ Natasha's- Mecca Student Dance Night and Open Floor Dancing
** Fri/April 10 – Mecca 10th Anniversary potluck dance celebration @ Mecca
** Sat/April 11 – Free day of dance and drumming classes @ Mecca

Three chances to celebrate Mecca’s 10th anniversary. Tonight, their monthly 1st Monday student performance at Natasha’s. This time ‘round, the gig is in Natasha’s Prop’s Boutique at the corner of Main & Esplanade (instead of in the restaurant proper). There’ll be free food and plenty of dancing fun for everyone. Friday, April 10 – the actual anniversary date of the studio’s opening - Mecca (451 Chair Ave – off S.Broadway) hosts a potluck dance party starting at 8pm. All ages are welcome to the very informal gathering. Then, Saturday, Mecca is offering a FREE day of drumming and dance classes. From 11:30am-12:30pm, there’ll be a free class teaching basic technique of dumbek drumming. (Note: you’ll need to bring your own drum) From 12:30-2pm, it’s basic belly dance with live drumming. An aside - Teresa Tomb’s work with Mecca has been a huge inspiration to me. The many ways she’s found to bring the community together in appreciation of dance and one another awe me. Yeah, she’s pretty cool. If you haven’t read Kakie Urch’s profile of Mecca in the most recent ACE, pick it up.

** Fri/April 10 – Art Opening – “Deliverables” by Bureau V @ L.O.T. (Land of Tomorrow)
This Friday at 7pm, L.O.T. (Land of Tomorrow - 527 E 3rd St, near the intersection with Midland Ave) presents an opening reception for the exhibit “Deliverables” by Bureau V. Here the description from their recent announcement – “DELIVERABLES presents four large scale drawings from the New York based architecture studio Bureau V. As a response to the waning use-value of the physical drawing in contemporary architectural practice, these documents seek to establish new values for the architectural deliverable outside the functions of presentation and construction. Each drawing is an original document created through processes such as computer-generated graphic content, hand drawing, applique, painting, and collage. … Bureau V specializes in the design and production of architecture that engages in beauty, culture, and economy. The studio's expertise lies in a range of work from cultural institutions to large commercial buildings to performance and new media installations.” The show will be up from April 10 through the 15. Gallery hours are 10am-5pm, Tuesday through Friday. More info at http://www.lotlex.com/.

** Sat/April 11 – Lexington Farmers Market returns! NEW LOCATION
The Market moves back outside next Saturday at it’s new location in Cheapside Park. Whoohoo! Full scoop at http://lexingtonfarmersmarket.com/.

Some family fun courtesy of The Embrace, a progressive church that operates out of the KY Theatre on Sundays. The event starts at 10:30am and runs til around 12:30. There’ll be an Easter egg hunt, a petting zoo, music, and giveaways. As the flyer says, “all faiths and ages welcome.”

ARIEL PINK’s HAUNTED GRAFFITI w/VIVIAN GIRLS @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone
doors 8:30pm/show starts 10pm, all ages, $5 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

No FreeKY Fest this year, but I’d argue that the station’s equaling, perhaps even besting, last year’s festival with a string of outstanding shows this semester. Already we’ve seen visits by Mahjongg, Women, and Beach House, now Ariel Pink and Vivian Girls! And, there are more on the horizon – Windy & Carl w/Benoit Pioulard, the Brotzmann-Revis-Waits Trio, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, just to name three. The station is spoiling us.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti = warped and hazy home-recorded pop songs. His last Lex appearance opening for Animal Collective at ArtsPlace, had him solo on-stage meandering around the stage singing over top of backing tracks. (I loved it.) I believe, Ariel’s put together a full band for this tour. Vivian Girls = three Brooklyn gals making fast and fuzzy, melodic pop reminiscent of Black Tambourine, 14 Iced Bears, and Rocketship. Show up early. This one may sell out.

>> Thursday, April 9
SOUND/VISION 2009 @ UK Singletary Center for the Arts (concert hall)
7:30pm, all ages, FREE

A concert of modern and avant-garde music with video projections by Lexington artist/musician Jason Corder. Pieces will include Steve Reich's 'Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices, and Organ' and Marc Mellits' 'Tight Sweater' (check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w00GdwEd25Q&feature=channel_page and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLEn9uooaXc&feature=channel_page for idea of what you’re in for), as well as Brian Ferneyhough's 'Bone Alphabet' for solo percussionist, and electro-acoustic improv/spoken word featuring Josh Upchurch.

>> Thursday, April 9
STILL FLYIN’ w/GOLDENROD and MATT DUNCAN @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone
8pm, all ages, FREE – sponsored by The Embrace & WRFL 88.1FM

Still Flyin’ is a pure party band fond of poppy, reggae-inflected songs about smoking weed and hamjammin’. Typically performing with 10-20 members, the band is a Bay Area indie rock supergroup led by Sean Rawls of Masters of the Hemisphere and including members of the Aislers Set, Track Star, Red Pony Clock, and Je Suis France (live, the group has included Jens Lekman and members of Versus and Architecture in Helsinki). Expect wonderful silliness. “F*ck the Stress” and come let them “bicycle kick your worries away.” (Check out their video for “Rope Burn” – directed by Isobel Knowles of Architecture in Helsinki – at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQKbmhrEwg4.) http://myspace.com/stillflyin

Goldenrod has been described as, “A burgoo of outsider artist moonshinning music that hybridizes electro, psychedelia, pre-'74 funk, neo-soul with dark tinges of Appalachia.” Check them for yourself at http://www.myspace.com/paintingsforprophets. Matt Duncan is one of my favorite songwriters. Expect some of the catchiest, bounciest pop you’ll ever hear. And, at this show, Matt debuts a horn section! http://myspace.com/mattduncanmusic. Don’t miss it.

>> Friday, April 10
DARRYL COOK w/ROB THEAKSTON @ C.P.R, behind Al’s at the corner of 6th and Limestone – 7pm, all ages, $3
+ and +
QAHMICS? Con(Cert) featuring THE SMACKS! with J.GLENN, CARL CALM, and ATTEMPT @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone – 10pm, all ages, $5

The Charles Mansion/Fact House crowd takes over the corner of 6th and Limestone. Don’t know what Daryl and Rob have planned for the C.P.R. gig, but I’m sure it’ll be noisy, out, and awesome. The show afterwards at Al’s is a benefit to raise money for Andrew Crawford’s Qahmics? Anthology of local underground/independent comics. I’m gonna be lazy and fall back on Trevor Tremaine’s (of Attempt) descriptions from the Facebook invite (he’s smarter than me anyway) – “ATTEMPT=prog-pop primitivism, guitar/drum machine/vox. Carl Calm=sunglasses music from LSD Santa Claus. The Smacks=the original mess!!! Featuring astronaut/senator J. Glenn.”
