Check Eye Contact & Jakob Olausson at the Icehouse on Saturday. “Triplets of Belleville” Sunday at the Kentucky Theatre. Thursday, ISWHAT?! on campus and Apples In Stereo/High Water Marks at the Dame. Friday, a who’s who of the young Chicago jazz scene at UK’s Worsham Theater. Luv, Ross

:::::::::::::::::::::::: Announcements :::::::::::::::::::::::::::

** ** Now through Thurs/Sept 13 - Rosa Goddard International Film Festival at the Kentucky Theatre
A French classic everyday for a week. “Seven Samurai,” “The Third Man,” “The Triplets of Belleville,” “Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and more. You can find a full schedule (including all the showtimes) on Rich Copley’s “Copious Notes” blog – http://copiousnotes.typepad.com/weblog/2007/08/2007-rosa-godda.html. All showings are $5. A steal.

** Throughout September at Third Street Stuff Coffee – Birdin’: A photography exhibit by Brett Hisey
This month our favorite beanery, Third Street Stuff Coffee (257 N. Limestone), plays host to an exhibit of bird photos by our friend Brett Hisey. (perhaps you know Brett by story – Hollywood animator who worked on everything from Iron Giant to He-Man. Relocated to Lex around ’01 to work on his own projects – or sight – little dude with a long gray ponytail.) Had a chance to peep the exhibit Wednesday. It’s beautiful. Strikingly intimate shots. The personalities of the different birds really comes through. (My favorites were the light box pieces.) The shop’s open Monday-Saturday, 7am-11pm and Sunday, 9am-11pm. Third Street will host a closing party for the exhibit on Friday, September 21st (during Gallery Hop) with live performances by ARA, Sri Tarasita, The Silver Masked Tenor, Bunny Bunny Ape and more on the patio outside. More info on that in the next issue.

** LASC now accepting registration for Fall classes
From a recent LASC email - “The Living Arts & Science Center is now taking registrations for their Fall session of classes for children, teens and adults. Beginning October 2, unique and creative classes are offered by professional artists and arts educators in a variety of disciplines including stained glass, chocolate sculpture, wood carving, cartooning, oil painting, illustration, drawing and sketching, self-portraits, shadow and sock puppets, theatre improvisation, and much more!

Classes are offered after-school, on weekday evenings and on Saturdays for children, teens and adults and during the weekday for Home Schooled students. Classes are offered as multi-week sessions and also as one or two-time workshops. Classes are also offered 8 am – 5:30 PM on the Fayette Co. No-School Days of September 28, October 18, October 19, November 6 and November 21.

A complete schedule of classes is available on the LASC Web site: http://www.LASCLEX.org or call the LASC at 859/252-5222 to have one mailed to you.”

** Bike Polo in Woodland Park
I’d meant to have this out in time for folks to check out the bike polo festivities Wednesday night. Sorry that didn’t happen. I think it’s become a twice-a-week tradition - Wednesday and Sunday evenings – so roll out on Sunday and enjoy the fun. Here’s the general scoop via an email from our friend Grant Clouser sent to the Lexington Alleycats listserv – “Yep, It's polo time. Guaranteed to be the best time you've had on two wheels since, well...since you took off that last training wheel. The point is bike polo is fun to play and fun to watch, and yes, like nascar there are going to be wrecks. … Bring a beater bike, if you have one, and your trashy beverage of choice. We have plenty of mallets, for now.” I’ll post specific info about the next session on the blog as soon as word comes across the listserv.

:: TONIGHT! Friday, September 7 ::
SILVER APPLES w/THE MOON UPSTAIRS, WARMER MILKS, and DIAGRAM A @ UK’s Memorial Hall
8pm, all ages, $5 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

I can’t believe this! Silver Apples are it. Electro garage psych pioneers. Extremely rare chance to see them (I think, it’s ‘him’ – Simeon – at this point). Don’t miss it. Here are band descriptions borrowed from a recent email from Trevor Tremaine:

*SILVER APPLES - Legendary 60s pioneers of electronic rock! Utterly unique and incredibly influential. First tour in 8 years! RIYL: Kraftwerk, Cluster. http://www.silverapples.com

*THE MOON UPSTAIRS - Epic pop/rock tunes from L.A. RIYL: John Lennon, early ELO, slicker E6 bands. http://www.themoonupstairs.com

*WARMER MILKS - Some Kentucky boys on a Ramble Tamble. RIYL: Mid-70s Dead, Royal Trux. http://www.warmermilks.com/

*DIAGRAM A - Old-school industrial noise on homemade electronics from Providence, RI. RIYL: Prurient, Wolf Eyes, gigs at the Frowny Bear

[Full disclosure: Tre Tre is the promotions director at RFL and plays with Warmer Milks.]

:: Saturday, September 8 ::
EYE CONTACT w/JAKOB OLAUSSON and SUS & JAKOB @ The Icehouse
8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation – part of the Outside the Spotlight series

A perfect follow-up to the Silver Apples gig. Eye Contact = meditative psychedelic jazz trio from NYC featuring members of No Neck Blues Band and Tall Firs. Jakob Olausson = beautiful freak folk from Sweden. Sus & Jakob = spacious free form duo of Olausson and his gal Sus. [Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Thursday, September 13 ::
ISWHAT?! w/area poets including BIANCA SPRIGGS, GRACE BRUENDERMAN, CHUCK CLENNEY, PATRICK NALLY, and CHAD REESE @ UK’s Memorial Hall amphitheater - 8pm, all ages, FREE – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM, part of the Outside the Spotlight series

My standard description of ISWHAT?! has always been something like “Cincy hip hop/free jazz hybrid.” Make no mistake, those elements are still front and center, but listening to the duo’s most recent record “The Life We Chose” you definitely hear the influences of mc Napoleon Maddox’s recent collaborations with electro-hoppers Ming & FS and free-funk big band Burnt Sugar. This is the sound of genre boundaries being ignored. Energetic, heady, and funky. Pre-show and in-between set poetry bursts from some Lexington’s best young writers. I’m personally a big fan of Bianca Spriggs. And, I can’t wait to see my man Chuck perform.
[Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Thursday, September 13 ::
THE APPLES IN STEREO w/AQUEDUCT and THE HIGH WATER MARKS @ The Dame
10pm, ages 21+, $10

Bop, smile, and bounce with some of the finest indie-rock/pop in all the land. New High Water Marks record lands soon! http://www.applesinstereo.com. http://myspace.com/thehighwatermarks.

:: Friday, September 14 ::
KEEFE JACKSON’S FAST CITIZENS @ UK’s WORSHAM THEATER, UK Student Center - near the corner of Euclid and ML King Aves - 8pm, all ages, FREE for UK students/$3 for non-students

KJ’s Fast Citizens = melodic free jazz sextet led by saxophonist Keefe Jackson and a who’s who of Chicago underground jazz musicians including cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm (Vandermark 5, Valentine Trio, Brotzmann Chicago Tentet), reedist Aram Shelton (Dragons 1976), cornetist Josh Berman (Chicago-Luzern Exchange), bassist Anton Hatwich (Rempis Percussion Quartet), and percussionist Frank Rosaly (Rempis Percussion Quartet, Valentine Trio). Ok, the general public may not recognize those names, but, believe me, the players are the cream of the young Chicago jazz scene. The group’s debut record, “Ready Everyday,” released last year on Delmark, is outstanding. http://www.keefejackson.com. [Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Saturday, September 15 ::
THE INDIGO w/TOBIAS ROBERSON, RAKADU GYPSY DANCE, and PEZHEAD @ The Moon, Euclid Ave – 8pm, ages 21+, $20 adv/$25 at the door

If you’re into the belly dance scene (and, lord knows Teresa Tomb of Mecca and Rakadu has cultivated an amazingly knowledgeable and appreciative audience here), it doesn’t get any better than this pairing of the United States’ hottest belly dancer, Rachel Brice (leader of The Indigo), and arguably the scene’s most exciting percussionist, Tobias Roberson. Add performances by Lexington’s beloved Rakadu Gypsy Dance and the bizzaro beat, goofball performance genius Pezhead and you’ve got a full night of fun.

:: Sunday, September 16 ::
"When The Water Recede: Reading by The Affrilachian Poets to Benefit Victims of Hurricane Katrina" hosted by BIANCA SPRIGGS and featuring FRANK X. WALKER, MITCHELL DOUGLAS, JUDE McPHERSON, and more @ Third Street Stuff Coffee - open mic starting at 6:30pm/scheduled poets to follow, all ages, $5 suggested donation

Impassioned and important poetry benefit.
