Another abbreviated edition. This one takes you through next Wednesday, August 22. I’ll hope to have a full issue out then.

Go see Brown Recluse Sings & Hot Models TONIGHT at the Icehouse. Go to Magee’s tomorrow morning for the bike commuter breakfast. Peep the inspired weirdness of Fat Worm of Error Sunday night at the Icehouse or go see The Joybombs and Dialectics at UK.

Luv, Ross

BROWN RECLUSE SINGS w/HOT MODELS, and KELLI SHAY HICKS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation - FREE ice cream!

BROWN RECLUSE SINGS, from Philadelphia, write great laid-back indie pop songs (think of Camera Obscura with male vocals, or old school Belle & Sebastian. Check 'em out at http://myspace.com/brownreclusesings (my current favorite is "Lazy Bones").

HOT MODELS are the new young lords of the Lexington rock scene. They're Just getting their feet under them, so expect a short, power-packed set. Check http://myspace.com/notmodels for a few tracks ("Taste Back" is the jam that sticks in my head).

KELLI SHAY HICKS is a lovely Nashville folkie with a voice akin to Joanna Newsom but more straight-forward songwriting inclinations. http://www.kellishayhicks.com . [Full Dislcosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Friday, August 17 ::
BEE MASK w/ROT TON BONE, SAM GOLDBERG, and WALTER CARSON @ The Frowny Bear, 218 Forest Park - 9pm, all ages, donations accepted for the touring bands

Robert Beatty described the bill as “a whole mess of pristine drone and scummy electronics from Cleveland“ (with, of course, our Lex homey Walter Carson) in a recent email to the Charles Mansion listserv (http://www.Charlesmansion.org).

:: Sunday, August 19 ::
FAT WORM OF ERROR w/HORSE SPIRIT PENETRATES and WRETCHED WORST @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St – 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation - FREE ice cream!

FAT WORM OF ERROR = absurdist theatrical performance punk from Western Massachusetts featuring former members of Caroliner and Deerhoof! Very fun and kinda scary. http://yeay.suchfun.net/artists/fwoe.html

HORSE SPIRIT PENETRATES = blow out sounds from a duo of Western Mass dudes. http://myspace.com/horsespiritpenetrates

WRETCHED WORST = Lextown lunatics Scratchin' Puss, Walter Carson, and Caves punishing each other (and us) for having ears.
[Full Dislcosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Thursday, August 23 ::
ELEKIBASS w/CASPER AND THE COOKIES and BIG FRESH @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St – 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation

Continuing my tradition of giving a heads-up about shows that I’m really excited about but that fall just outside of the stated frame …
Elekibass = joyous Japanese psych poppers. http://myspace.com/elekibass2. Casper and the Cookies = bouncy Athens indie pop. http://myspace.com/casperthecookies. Big Fresh = our sweet, silly, and theatric fun pop heroes. http://myspace.com/bigfresh.

** Thurs/Aug 2 - Bike Commuter Breakfast
Don't bike to work? Well, these weekly bike commuter breakfasts, organized by various members of the Lexington biking community (Lauren Sherrow is doing the work this month), are a good reason to at least give it a try. Peeps gather every Thursday morning. This Thursday (Aug. 2), the spot is Stella's on Jefferson St, near the corner of Short). There are always breakfast and coffee specials for those who arrive on two-wheels. Scroll down to Greg's "Bike Events" section for the full scoop.

** “A-Void Busters” - FREE Thursday night shows @ Busters
Void Skate Shop and Busters (corner Main and Upper - next to the Dame) have teamed up to present a series of FREE shows this summer. Every Thursday throughout the summer, you’ll find free entertainment (and oftentimes free pizza!) at our favorite bar. Still can't find my schedule, so I'm not sure who's playing tomorrow (Aug. 2) or next Thursday. I do know that Rusuden is dj'ing before and in-between bands. Justin's a good dude, so go down and check him out. Music starts around 10 or 10:30pm.

** August Events at Natasha’s Cafe, 112 Esplanade
I apologize, I haven't done a good job of including all the cool Natasha's happening lately. They've got a ton of stuff going on in August. Among the highlights - Rakadu Gyspy Dance (Sat/Aug. 4), Mecca student dancer night (Mon/Aug. 6), "Murder at Cafe Noir" (presented by Fantastical Theatricals, Wed & Thurs/Aug. 8 & 9), The Swells (Fri/Aug 10), and the continuation of the cafe's "Wandering Storytellers" series (Fri/Aug. 27). You can find a full list of events and all the details for each show at http://www.natashascafe.com/html/cnews.html. The cafe is also hosting Until the Violence Stops benefit nights every Tuesday during August. They'll donate 10% of all restaurant proceeds to the UTVS Festival, a series of community-wide projects and art events geared toward spreading awareness about violence against women of all cultures. (The festival runs August 18 - September 1. More info about it in the next Lex Pro.) To make reservations, call the cafe at 859/259-2754. Questions about any of the upcoming events? Drop a line to Tara Adkins at tara@natashascafe.com.

ILAD w/JORDAN MUNSON and THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St -†8pm, all ages welcome, $3-$5 suggested donation

Richmond, Virginia's Ilad is the reason for the season. The group's debut record "National Flags" (recorded by John McEntire of Chicago post-rockers Tortoise) is an incredible meld of free jazz and post-rock textures. Recommended to fans of the aforementioned Tortoise, Papa M, and Pit Er Pat, http://myspace.com/ilad. Jordan Munson is a wonderful young local experimental musician (primarily a percussionist); half of the Karate Jones Duo. Also, part of Emily Hagihara's band. The Colour Out of Space is a young post-rock/soft-psychedelic group from Somerset, KY. http://www.myspace.com/thecolouroutofspacemusic

:: Friday, August 3 ::
DON CABALLERO w/WAX FANG, and IDAHO, ALASKA @ The Dame
doors 9pm, ages 21+, $5

As a friend said recently, “Don Cab isn’t Don Cab anymore.” That’s not to say DC isn’t worth seeing, just that it’s not the same magic as the original lineup. Fortunately, Wax Fang is just becoming Wax Fang. Their legend is growing show by show. Big intricate rock riffs – think Black Mountain meets … well … Don Caballero – grab you and then, just as your hand is about to solidify in the ‘fist of rock’ formation and your neck is about to get used to shaking the head of hair you no longer have, a perfect pop melody floats in among the rock. It’s really impressive stuff. Thanks, Mike, for turning me on to them.

:: Saturday, August 4 ::
IDEAL FREE DISTRIBUTION w/BUNNYGRUNT, ZAVALA, RYAN ANDERSON, and THAT'S MY DAUGHTER @ The Icehouse - 8pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation

A blissful night of pop built around artists on Athens' Happy Happy Birthday To Me label.

IDEAL FREE DISTRIBUTION, with members split between Lexington and Benon, KY, is on the periphery of the Elephant Six collective (the group's primary songwriter is Craig Morris, the brother-in-law of Apples in Stereo leader Robert Schneider - from the similarities of their songwriting styles you'd guess they were blood relatives). Their self-titled debut, released on Happy Happy Birthday To Me, is filled with sunshine-y 60's psychedelic sounds. Inexplicably it was released in the middle of winter. http://myspace.com/idealfreedistribution.

Bunnygrunt and Ryan Anderson are also HHBTM bands. BUNNYGRUNT bring rocked-out boy/girl pop songs from St. Louis. In the mid/late-90's, you'd have found them lumped into the cutesy "twee pop" scene. Now, a little older, they've found the volume knobs on their amps. http://myspace.com/therealbunnygrunt. RYAN ANDERSON, from Austin, TX, writes nice narrative indie-folk pop. http://myspace.com/ryananderson. ZAVALA = epic local rock/pop from Jason Zavala of The Elephants and friends. http://myspace.com/theelephants. THAT'S MY DAUGHTER are tag-along rockers from St. Louis. http://myspace.com/thatsmydaughter. [Full Dislcosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Tuesday, August 7 ::
RED PONY CLOCK w/THE JOYBOMBS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - 9pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation

Another great pop outfit from the Happy Happy Birthday to Me roster. RED PONY CLOCK, from San Diego, pen gloriously shabby junkyard pop gems full of horns and happiness. Can't wait to see the rambling fun. http://myspace.com/redponyclock. THE JOYBOMBS = Jeremy Midkiff (of Big Fresh) and friends (this time around, the entire Big Fresh lineup!) spreading smiles with cute and clever pop songs. http://myspace.com/thejoybombs. [Full Dislcosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Saturday, August 11 ::
THE DIALECTICS w/JK 47 @ Brooklyn Pizzeria & Grille, 410 W. Short St
10pm, ages 18+, $5 (I think)

Funky live hip hop sounds from our friends the Dialectics. Our peeps are gathering steam.

:: Sunday, August 12 ::
TRYPTAMINE w/JUXTA PHONA @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell)
8pm, all ages, donations accepted at the door

Spacey Sunday sounds of the soft, throbbing variety. Tryptamine = three of my favorite dudes – Chuck Moreland, Dewitt Snyder, and Tristan Morin. Juxta Phona = acclaimed Lexington experimental musician (and all around nice guy) Jason Corder. You can also look forward to videos by Mike Mattone.

:: Thursday, August 16 ::
BROWN RECLUSE SINGS w/HOT MODELS, and KELLI SHAY HICKS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation

I know it's doesn't fall in the timeframe, but I wanted to give you an early heads-up about this one because I'm really looking forward to it. Brown Recluse Sings, from Philadelphia, write great laid-back indie pop songs ala Belle & Sebastian or the Sarah Records catalog. Check 'em out at http://myspace.com/brownreclusesings. My current favorite is "Lazy Bones." Hot Models are the new young lords of the Lexington rock scene. They’re ust getting their feet under them, so expect a short, power-packed set. http://myspace.com/notmodels. "Taste Back" is the jam that sticks in my head. Kelli Shay Hicks is a lovely Nashville folkie with a voice akin to Joanna Newsom but more straight-forward songwriting inclinations. http://www.kellishayhicks.com.
