Awight ... p'haps not a full issue, but ... baby steps ...
Lots of good things coming. Start with Zavala, Englishman, and Some Other Meanness @ Al's on Friday, then sleep when you can - from now until the second week of November, there's a worthy event almost every night.
Hope all are well.
Luv, Ross
> The Picks >
Friday/October 17 > ZAVALA w/SOME OTHER MEANNESS and ENGLISHMAN @ Al's Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone > 9pm, all ages welcome, $3 > A fun one at my favorite venue in Lexington. Ex-Elephants leader Jason Zavala returns to Lexington (from his new Louisville digs) to debut his new Zavala lineup, and Andrew English of the Scourge of the Sea rolls out his new project Englishman (p'haps you saw their great set opening for Elf Power this summer). Southern Gothic indie rockers Some Other Meanness get sammiched in the middle.
Friday/October 17 > RC PRO AM w/LOS HEAVIES @ Brooklyn Pizza, in Victorian Square (corner of Short and Broadway) > 10pm, all ages, $? > I'm looking for full info. Will update when I find it.
Sunday/October 19 > ARA w/FOOTHILLS, and GREG BACKUS @ C.P.R., 607 N. Limestone (beside Al's - entrance is through the parking lot behind Al's on 6th St) > 6-9pm, all ages welcome, $3 >
From the Facebook event post,
"ARA = dream jazz from 2/3 Eyes & Arms of Smoke
Foothill = epic electronics from 1/3 Caboladies
Greg Backus = bedroom prog from 1/1 Greg Backus
Come try to hear the music over the sound of a kid playing foosball!"
Thursday/October 23 > THE ELEPHANT 6 HOLIDAY SURPRISE TOUR @ The Red Mile Round Barn, 1200 Red Mile Rd > all ages, FREE > sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM, YouAintNoPicasso.com, Red Mile Rocks, and TheLexingtonProject.org > Members of THE MUSIC TAPES, OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL, NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL, ELF POWER and more playing songs by those bands and other Elephant 6 Recording Collective members. If you're a fan of modern, psychedelic indie rock/pop (or, heck, just passingly familiar with college radio over the past 10-15 years), you know the story. If not, the Elephant 6 Recording Collective is a tightly knit, loosely organized collective of musicians/bands including the aforementioned bands, as well as THE APPLES IN STEREO, OF MONTREAL, BEULAH, THE GERBILS, and many others. Collectively, over the last 15 years, they've helped shape the direction of independent music in the States. This is a VERY rare tour. The most exciting rumor floating around is that Neutral Milk Hotel leader and famous recluse, Jeff Mangum, has indicated that he may appear at the Lexington show. Who knows if that'll happen? Either way, this will be an amazing show. Heck, the venue alone - Red Mile's historic Round Barn - assures that.
Friday/October 24 > SHELLEY SHORT w/ALEXIS GIDEON and ATTEMPT @ C.P.R., 607 N. Limestone (beside Al's - entrance is through the parking lot behind Al's on 6th St) > 7-10pm, all ages welcome, $3 > Shelley Short = lovely, country-tinged folk from Portland, Oregon. Recommended to fans of Jolie Holland, Bill Santen/Birddog, and Thao Nguyen. Alexis Gideon = electro pop goofiness in the vein of Dan Deacon and Rafter. Alexis will be performing part of his animated/claymated video opera "video musics." Attempt = the prog pop solo project of Trevor Tremaine (Hair Police, Eyes & Arms of Smoke). No telling if this performance will take the shape of the electric guitar-over-pre-recorded-backing band show he did at Al's last month or the stripped-down acoustic guitar set he did at C.P.R.'s debut event last week. Both sets were outstanding.
Friday/October 24 > "Radio Vaudeville" featuring THE MEZMER SOCIETY, RAKADU GYPSY DANCE, and THE SWELLS @ Al's Bar, corner of 6th and Limestone > 9pm, all ages welcome, $5 > A style-y evening of, as the handflyer describes it, "luscious vaudeville, balkan ruckus, heart-stopping belly dance, and old time sounds."
Saturday/October 25 > VOX ARCANA (Tim Daisy - drums, Fred Lonberg-Holm - cello, James Falzone - clarinet)@ C.P.R., 607 N. Limestone (beside Al's - entrance is through the parking lot behind Al's on 6th St) > 7-10pm, all ages welcome, $3 > part of the Outside the Spotlight jazz and improvised music series > sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM > Tim and Fred, members of the Vandermark 5, Valentine Trio, Triage, and the Festival Quartet, are two of my favorite players from the Chicago free-jazz cadre. This project explores 'new music'/modern composition territory. From Tim's website - "The music is influenced by concepts which were being formed by 20th Century American composers active in New York in the '50s and beyond, including John Cage, Earl Brown, and Morton Feldman. Further inspiration comes from the music being made in 1960s Chicago by the AACM, in particular the work of violinist and composer Leroy Jenkins, as well as reedist, composer and educator, Anthony Braxton."
Sunday/October 26 > DANIEL MARTIN MOORE @ CD Central, 377 S. Limestone > 3pm, all ages welcome, FREE > Was ecstatic to see this in-store listed in the most recent CD Central newsletter. Daniel is a Northern Kentucky kid who used to come down to a bunch of the Outside the Spotlight series shows in Lex. Now, he's a Sub Pop recording artist with a beautiful, freshly released album, "Stray Age." It's a real Cinderella story - Daniel sent an unsolicited demo to Sub Pop and amazingly they took the time to listen and even more amazingly they signed him. The strength and clarity of his voice set him alongside Nick Drake and Andrew Bird in my musical library. I picked up "Stray Age" at CD Central last Friday and haven't stopped listening. Here are links to a few of my favorites from the disc - "The Old Measure", "It's You", and "Stray Age" (Note: I hot linked to "The Old Measure" but the other two take you to the blog postings that contain the mp3 links.)
