** TONIGHT! Fri/October 13 – Alleycat Race
What you gonna do on Friday, the 13th? Roll with the Friday the 13th alley cat messenger style bike race, that’s what. Meetup at 9pm in the parking lot at 115 W. Short St. All bikes and experience levels welcome. I can vouch for the ‘all bikes and experience levels welcome” shit – they mean it – I did one of these in August and I was just getting comfortable riding on the streets. It was a blast, even at my level of riding, so don’t be shy.

** Sun/October 22 - Mecca’s 5th annual resurrection of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”
Yeah, they said they were gonna take a year off, but in the end Mecca got goaded into making Halloween in Lexington cool again. The studio's resurrection of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," which began in 2002 and is now being imitated in several other cities across the country, is Lexington's unofficial Halloween parade. The festivities start at 7pm on Sunday, October 22 at the Kentucky Theatre. The zombies will then make there way down Main from the theater to Phoenix Park (corner of Limestone and Main - adjacent to the Public Library). An after-party will follow immediately in the parking lot next to Third Street Stuff Coffee. For more info, check out meccadance.com or call 254/9790.

** Sat/October 14 – “Shake and Chakra: A Combined Workshop in Yoga and Belly Dance “ at Mecca
This Saturday, October 14th at Mecca (451 Chair Avenue), David Pailet and sri TaraSita (aka Teresa Tomb) join forces to present a workshop combining elements of TriYoga and Y.E.S. Yoga with aspects of Tribal Style Belly Dance. Expect an intense workout as you move between vigorous and flow style yogas to high energy belly dance and belly dance isolations. The workshop is designed to move back and forth through these forms to optimize energetic and expressive release. The workshop will run from 11am-2pm. The cost is $35 in advance, $45 at the door. To register, email info@meccadance.com or call 859/254-9790.

About the instructors:
David Pailet moved to Lexington this summer from New Orleans and brings with him a combined 29 years of practicing disciplines of yoga, martial arts, and gymnastics.

sri TaraSita is the director of Mecca Studio and artistic director of Rakadu Gypsy Dance in Lexington, Ky. TaraSita has been studying and teaching belly dance as well as many other multicultural dance forms for the past 12 years. She offers a high sense of artistically innovative asthetic to belly dance combined with a strong commitment to group dance improvisation.

Working together David and TaraSita hope to open up the physical, mental, creative and spiritual pathways within each individual.

Note: Following the workshop, Rakadu Gypsy performs at 9pm Natasha's Cafe at 112 Esplanade in downtown Lexington.

** Sat/October 14 – Art Opening – Works by Albert Moser at Third Street Stuff Coffee
All are invited to a reception for artist Albert Moser, this Saturday October 14, from 7-9pm at Third Street Stuff Coffee (257 North Limestone – near the corner of Limestone and 3rd St).

About Albert Moser (by Bruce Burris): Albert Moser walks in - seemingly out of nowhere - pockets jammed with scribbled papers and talking New Jersey- which is a language I understand. He proceeds to show me the amazing small drawings he has - folded Origami like in his shirt pocket. On the back of an ad for a Kung Fu Academy Albert has drawn something of a cross between a psychedelic road map and a tattoo - "I'll never pay for a piece of paper" he exclaims proudly.

Though Albert is in his 70's this is his first art exhibit. Albert still lives in Trenton New Jersey - as an ad for Vito's Italian Restaurant in Trenton - which Albert has transformed - attests to. Albert’s sister lives here in Lexington and he visits her on occasion - which is how I came to meet Albert one day - quite accidentally. I hope you enjoy Albert's work as much as I do - and remember - there is never a need to buy paper!

You can check out one of Albert’s pieces here

The exhibit will be up through December 1st. For more info: Bruce Burris, Latitude 859/806-0195 or Ruth Moser 859/278-5191

** Every Monday @ Mecca – Rebecca Stephenson’s Yoga Class
I’ve heard great things about Rebecca Stephenson’s yoga class at Mecca from a number of sources. Got this email from our pal Mick Jeffries today and thought it was worth passing along …

“Hi friends:

When was the last time you took a yoga class? If you've had the yearning, have never tried, or just feel like you've "fallen off the wagon," and would like to get back on, meet my yoga teacher, Rebecca Stephenson!

Rebecca shares her yoga expertise at Mecca Studio on Mondays at 6pm.

I love Rebecca's classes; they're always challenging, but not discouragingly so, always relaxing, and I always --always-- feel better afterwards.

In fact, Rebecca's class may be the best kept secret in town.... WHICH MEANS... she needs more students to keep doing it! Therefore, if you've been looking to get back into yoga, or you're a beginner or just looking for a great way to unwind after the start of the work week, COME JOIN US!

Rebecca's Yoga at Mecca
Mondays from 6-7pm at Mecca: Live Studio and Gallery, 451 B Chair Avenue (across Broadway from UK's Reynolds Art Building)
Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=451+chair+avenue+lexington+kentucky&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=1&iwloc=A
ring 859-254-9790

Disclaimer: this is a self-serving announcement by Mick, who wants to keep taking yoga classes with Rebecca!”

The event will include a workshop on how to make your own zine, a preview of a zine documentary, free grub, and prizes. ** Thurs/October 19 – Art Opening - "A Bostonian Painter in Kentucky: Asa Park (1790-1827)" @ Georgetown College
All are invited to the opening of "A Bostonian Painter in Kentucky: Asa Park (1790-1827)" @ Georgetown College’s Anne Wright Wilson Fine Arts Gallery, on the corner of College and Mulberry Streets. ** Beginning Mon/October 23 - Modern Dance Class @ Mecca
Mecca: Live Studio and Gallery continues to expand its class offerings. Beginning Monday, October 23rd, the studio will offer a beginning/intermediate level Modern Dance class taught by Hannah Varga. Classes will run Mondays from 7-8:30pm. For more info, email info@meccadance.com or call 254-9790.

Here’s Hannah’s description of the class: Using a combination of various techniques ranging from Bartenieff to Graham, this class introduces the fundamentals of Modern Dance. Designed for the beginning to intermediate adult dancer, we will work on core strength, flexibility, and dynamic performance. The class will consist of a warm up and conditioning exercises followed center combinations.

And a brief bio: A native of Lexington, Hannah Varga has danced her way home from Arizona, California, and New York. She has trained extensively in both ballet and modern disciplines. Ms. Varga holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Arizona State University, has studied at Ballet Arizona, the San Francisco Dance Center, the Martha Graham School, and Limon Institute, as well as with Master Teacher Nadine Revene at Ballet Arts of New York. Ms. Varga has also shown her own creative work at The Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn, The Manhattan Theater Source in New York, Cave Nine in Birmingham Alabama, and danced with various performance artists across the country. This year she also began training in Gyrotonic, a conditioning program based on yoga, tai chi, and swimming, that teaches more efficient ways to use the body and assist in injury prevention. It is with great pleasure that she share her experiences with the community that first introduced her to the art form.

** Call for Submissions - “Theories/Practices of Blogging”
Our friend Michael Benton (whom you can thank for the free Bluegrass Film Society screenings) has extended an invitation to all to join in on a collective blogging section of the upcoming winter issue of Reconstruction. The issue is the “Theories/Practices of Blogging.” In addition to the special section of posts on blogging there will be about a dozen essays on blogging. The deadline is October 27th. The intent of the special section of the issue will be to collect a wide range of bloggers and link up to their statements in regards to why they blog (something many of us are asked) and any statement they have on the theories/practices of blogging. If peeps already have a post on this they can feel free to use it, or, if interested, can submit a new one. Reconstruction will link to each statement from the issue at their site, with the intent of creating a hyperlinked list of statements on blogging that can serve as an introduction to blogging (or an expansion of knowledge for those already blogging). If you’re interested, contact Michael at mdbento@gmail.com.

You can peep Michael’s “Dialogic” blog at http://dialogic.blogspot.com and the Bluegrass Film Society blog at http://bluegrassfilmsociety.blogspot.com.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CD REVIEW :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Bobby Bare Jr.
The Longest Meow
Bloodshot Records

Seems like there is a slew of artists lately that have departed from their ‘norm’ to put out a more roots-based effort. Usually that means a little more countrified. Ya know, get a pedal or lap steel player, maybe some fiddle or something – to make the whole ordeal sound more achingly genuine. I’m usually a sucker for most of that stuff, but eventually when Trent Reznor releases his version of “Sweetheart of the Rodeo,” I’m gonna have to draw some kinda line. Hell, maybe I’m wrong about it all, but in order for this review to work just agree with me.

One guy that has the actual lineage to drop a ‘Tear In My Beer’ kind of album would be Bobby Bare Jr. – son of country great Bobby Bare. But, one thing I’ve always dug about the younger Bare is that he has never really leaned too hard on the legacy.

His latest is another fine example of how he will freely dabble into some classic Countrypolitan and then fly off into some other direction – punk, arena rock, nursery rhymin’.

Plus, his warped sense of humor is prominently displayed via his lyrical output. Now, this is some insanely high praise, but I find him to be a kindred spirit to the great Roger Miller. (On the insanely high praise-o-meter this is registering the needle to its breaking point).

“The Longest Meow” was recorded in one day, during an 11-hour session with folks from My Morning Jacket, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Lambchop and Clem Snide. It has a loose, off-the-cuff feel – and that largely defines the album.

As a complete work, it’s not splendid from beginning to end – there are a couple of throwaways, or maybe one or two tunes that seemed half-baked. Which is just fine, because when this album is on the mark – it’s killer stuff. “Borrow Your Cape” captures the guys from My Morning Jacket in a monstrous riff, which is followed up by an acoustic take on the Pixies classic “Where Is My Mind” --- oh, Frank Black is another kindred spirit – actually if you combined Roger Miller and Frank Black, a combo probably not often contemplated in the history of music contemplation – you ‘d be in the Bobby Bare Jr. neighborhood.

Yes, there are smooth alt.country/Americana moments – complete with the pretty pedal steel – but it’s juxtaposed with lip-smacking noises and lyrics about Sonny & Cher. Sure, it’s a scattered mess, but take half of the 12 songs on the album and you’ve got an eclectic EP worthy of selection over most full-length efforts by all those artist just passing by. -- bcm

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: THE PICKS :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::: Friday, October 13 through Friday, October 27 :::::::::::

:: Thursday, October 19 ::
WOLF EYES w/EYES AND ARMS OF SMOKE and JOHN WIESE @ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue – off S. Broadway near Bolivar (across Broadway from UK’s Reynolds Bldg) - 9pm, all ages, $5 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

A visit from the rock stars of the noise scene. (I'm not kidding ... for Christ's sake, they played Coachella last year!) Wolf Eyes = amazing throbbing, droning, sludgey noise from Michigan featuring our man, Hair Police-man Mike Connelly. Check out one of their new jams - “The Driller”.

:: Friday, October 20 ::
THE SMACKS! w/THE CHEAT @ The Frowny Bear, 208 Forest Park
9pm, all ages, donations for bands

Our glitter-billy friends (The Smacks!) and their friends (The Cheat) playing at our friends' house (Ben/Tony/D-Rel). I think that Tight Leather might be playing this gig too. http://myspace.com/thesmacks

:: Friday, October 20 ::
THE FEATURES w/BLING KONG @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $7

Bling Kong tells you about themselves: “We are the first rock extravaganza built around 4 cheerleaders, 3 drummers, 2 guitarists, bassist and a video DJ. We’re the queens and kings of all things super-fantastic.” They remind me of some of my party pop favorites – Josie Cotton, the B52’s, the Waitresses, the Brunettes. Their video for “I Want More” is like a “Common People” for the common people. http://myspace.com/blingkong

As many times as they played in Lexington in the last 7 years, you’re all prolly familiar with the pop genius of the Features by now, but if you’re not, here’s an excerpt from a preview Samantha Herald wrote for their show at the Dame in August:

“The Features have been having a rough year. In April, they were dropped by their label, Universal, when the band turned down an offer to do a cover song for a commercial (as well as including the song on their next album and potentially using it as a single), which occurred only a week before the band was due to begin recording their new album. As an indirect result of the label-induced stress, founding member/keyboard-pounder Parrish Yaw left the band. Since then, Yaw has been replaced by Mark Bond and the band has even released a few demos to their fans via their website ("Contrast" and "Wooden Heart" can currently be heard on their myspace page). http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif

The Features have always been well loved in Lexington, KY, a love that is obviously mutual, as the band always makes a point to stop and play for us whenever on tour. Anyone who has ever seen the band will agree that their live shows are wildly magnetic. The Features are one band whose magic resonates right off the stage into their crowds. Matthew Pelham's vocals are so defined and compliment the sound of the music so well, I can't imagine what his voice would sound like without it.

The Features will make you dance and they will make you sing over and over and over, not even the man can stop them.” http://www.thefeatures.com, . There’s a long article about the band’s recent travails here.

:: Saturday October 21 ::
DE NOVO DAHL w/THE JOYBOMB and more tba @ Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue
8pm, all ages, $3 – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

Nashville’s De Novo Dahl’s played several times at the Dame this year, but this’ll be their first all ages show in town. Here’s what Tony Miller had to say about them last time they were in town:

“When it comes to seeing bands live, I am a curmudgeon. I do it but I’m often disappointed - live sound sucks. De Novo Dahl changed my mind. I saw these guys open for the Features last year and I was blown away. They actually sounded good! Not to mention that they had a live energy that was entirely mesmerizing and a rear-shaking groove that was directly proportionate to my alcohol consumption. That show actually prompted me to buy their CD at the merch desk, something that I never do - and believe it or not it sounded better. This show is definitely worth catching.” http://www.denovodahl.com

The Joybomb = cute pop silliness from Big Fresh’s Jeremy Midkiff. http://myspace.com/antonigaudi

:: Monday, October 23 ::
TIGHT LEATHER opening for DIANE AND THE SHELL @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $3

Tight Leather = new local post-punk project featuring members of RC Pro Am and Mad Shadows. Haven’t heard them yet, but a couple of my trusted pals said their debut gig at the Dame last week was killer.

Diane and the Shell = instrumental post-rock in the Don Caballero-vein of things from Italy. http://www.dianeandtheshell.net, http://myspace.com/dianeandtheshell

:: Wednesday, October 25 ::
J. RODDY WALSTON AND THE BUSINESS w/LYLAS and JACOB AND THE FURRIES @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $5

I still haven't caught J. Roddy Walston and the Business live, but I enjoy what I've heard of their theatric pop online. Likewise with the soft pop of Nashville's Lylas. Our costumed pop-hop locals Jacob and the Furries open.

http://myspace.com/jroddy, http://myspace.com/lylas, http://myspace.com/jacobandthefurries

:: Thursday, October 26 ::
PARLOUR BOYS w/FORGET CASSETTES and DE NOVO DAHL @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $6

Awight, this is going too far. We're being invaded by Tennessee. Seven shows in 'The Picks' - five of them involving a band from the Volunteer state. The Cheat, The Features, De Novo Dahl (twice!), Lylas, and Forget Cassettes ... hell, J.Roddy just moved out of Murfreesboro a couple years ago. Grab a musket or something.
