Mardi Gras bike parade through downtown Lexington!
starting in Triangle Park (corner of Main and Broadway), meet-up @ 8:15pm
after-party at Gumbo Ya Ya, 1080 S. Broadway – next to Buffalo Wild Wings
Frequent alley cat organizer and all around swell guy Tim Buckingham is gathering folks for an informal Mardi Gras bike parade. All the info’s in his email below.
>
OK, so my heart is a little broken thinking about Lexington not having a people's mardi gras parade this year. If you did not attend any of the last few years then you missed a great time. Imagine marching in the streets, citizen bands, no cars, bike and hand pulled floats...It was a great time.
Since there is not going to be one this year I thought we could just pull something together this Tuesday for Fat Tuesday.
Decorate your bike, wear your beads, brings signs and noise... well make this a critical mass mardi gras parade. Meet at Triangle Park on Tuesday Feb 20th at 8:15 pm. Oh yea, there is a home UK game that starts at 9 so we can parade in traffic.
We'll do a victory lap around downtown from triangle park to thoroughbred park and back; then we'll head out Broadway to Gumbo Ya Ya for food and beers. At Ya Ya’s, we can get some food to eat, drink $2 BBC and Abita Beers, plus free King Cake.
Start decorating and get ready to rock the streets of Lexington during a UK Game.
Cheers, TIM (Buckingham)

Cold weather = SUCKajuwea. But good haps be happenin’. Go see the Apples TONIGHT (at the Dame, if you’re of age – at CD Central, if not). Drop a couple dollars on books to support CKRE. Peep the silliness of ExcaliBRAH and Lil Flip Scoldjah and feast on FREE grub from Gumbo Ya Ya at the Icehouse on Saturday. Check the ‘NEXT’ via ISWHAT?! & Joe Fonda and Jude McPherson on the 13th. Thanks to Samantha Herald and Greg Abernathy for the help. Stay warm. Luv, Ross
:::::::::::::::::::::::: Announcements :::::::::::::::::::::::::::
** TONIGHT! Thurs/February 8 – The Apples in Stereo - FREE in-store performance @ CD Central, 6pm
Yup, it’s true – CD Central has landed the Apples for a FREE in-store. Starts at 6pm. All ages welcome. Don’t miss it. (And, buy the new Apples record while you’re there. It’s awesome.) An early heads-up … the shop’s scored another coup – Monday, February 26th they’ll play host to a free performance by country legend Charlie Louvin. More info on that one in the next Lex Pro.
** Sat/February 10 – Benefit party for the Icehouse
You’re gonna find a lot of worthwhile fundraisers and causes in the following announcements. This is the one for which I’m most strongly advocating. Support your scene, the REAL scene. The Icehouse is the most interesting and most daring venue in Lex – film screenings, concerts, roller racing (!), art installations, and more - and it’s all done with an underground not-for-profit ideal. Show some love. Here’s the info: Saturday night. 9pm. FREE food from Gumbo Ya Ya. Performanes by ExcaliBRAH & Lil Flip Scoldjah and Duck Fat. Fun dj sets. Good peeps, good fun. Donations of any size accepted - $3 to $5 suggested. (Fifty bucks will get you in the door at “H’Artful of Fun.” You donate $50 to the Icehouse and Brian may well rename the place after you.) Check out “the Picks” for a fuller description of things.
** Fri/February 9 – “H’Artful of Fun” fundraiser for the Living Arts and Science Center
The annual fundraiser for the Living Arts and Science Center. Chocolate, bourbon, wine, an art auction, and more. The event runs 8-10pm at the Radisson Plaza Hotel downtown. Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 at the door. For more info, visit http://www.lasclex.org/.
** February 9-11 - “Read So That Others Can Hear It!” – Help support CKRE by shopping at Barnes & Noble
CKRE (Central Kentucky Radio Eye), ) a local Radio Reading Service for blind and print-impaired Central Kentuckians, has teamed up with Barnes & Noble for a fundraiser. This weekend – Feb. 9-11 – the Barnes & Noble in Hamburg Pavilion will donate up to 25% of the proceeds from books sold to people handing in a voucher supporting CKRE. OK, that sounds a little convoluted. B&N only makes the donation to CKRE on purchases where the customer hands in a voucher. You can find (and print) the voucher online at http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/CKRE/bnvoucher.pdf or you can pick up vouchers at all 6 branches of the Lexington Public Library, both Slone’s Signature Market locations, all John’s Shoe Stores, Alfalfa Restaurant, and PHAT Pie Café. For more info, visit http://www.uky.edu/Libraries/CKRE/bnbf.html or call 859/257-2702.
** Fri/February 9 – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” Concert @ Mecca
Perhaps the only event you’ll ever have the opportunity to attend that features belly dancing and clogging. Here’s all the info from a recent Mecca email: “Come and see some of Kentucky's most talented women cutting loose at Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, an evening of music and dance to be held at Mecca Live Studio and Gallery at 451 B Chair Avenue in Lexington, Kentucky on Friday, February 9th at 7 PM. Headlining will be Carla Gover, Diane Timmons and Jeri Katherine Howell, a diverse trio of women who will perform a variety of music based in Americana and Kentucky sounds, but branching out and experimenting with pop, classics, country, and folk. They will accompany themselves on guitars, banjos, keyboards, drums, flutes, and whatever their whims dictate, and will play a selection of traditional, original, and tasteful covers by their favorite writers. Be prepared for some ethereal 3-part-harmony and some get-down, rhythmic jams. A host of special guests make the evening extra-nice, with clogging group Hell or Highwater, The Rakadu Gypsy Dancers, and singer Karly Dawn Higgins. Admission is $8.50, all ages welcome. Tickets available at Third St. Stuff (257 N. Limestone, near the corner of 3rd Street) or online at http://www.spacesongs.net. For more information and tickets, call 859/494-4361 or visit http://www.spacesongs.net.”
** Sat/February 10 – “Dance of Enticement” Workshop @ Mecca
A little something for you, a little something for your significant other. Now in its 7th year, Mecca’s annual Valentine’s “Dance of Enticement” workshop has become one of the studio’s most popular offerings. As with Mecca’s belly dance classes, the workshop is mix of empowerment, spirituality, and sensuality. You can expect to go home with a renewed sense of confidence and a few moves to drive your sweetie wild (we’re talking subtle sh!t, not pole dancing – the choreography you’ll learn is based on aspects of classical Indian Dance and belly dance). The workshop, which is open to ALL SKILL LEVELS, will run from 2-4pm at Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue (just off S. Broadway, near Bolivar). Everyone’s encouraged to dress comfortably “for movement and inspiration.” All workshop participants will receive a cd with the music and a handout/reminder of the steps to review at home (that means you’ll have the tunes and a cheat sheet to practice up before your personal performance). The workshop fee is $25 for advance registration, $30 at the door. To pre-register, call 859/254-9790 or email info@meccadance.com. All in all a great V-day gift for you and/or lover lover.
** Sat/February 10 – Iraq Teach-In @ Transy
This Saturday from 9am-3pm in its William T. Young Campus Center, Transylvania University will host an Iraq Teach-in. This non-partisan event looks into issues surrounding the war in Iraq and includes lectures from Transylvania political science professor Jeffrey Freyman, UK Islamic studies professor Ihsan Bagby, Centre international studies and government professor Nayef Sambat, KCTC geography professor Rebecca Glasscock, UK history professor Robert Olson, and Transy student Erin Sisson. Our friends from Mecca will provide a little lunchtime entertainment and the program will end with a Transylvania student debate. Co-sponsored by the Bluegrass Chapter of the United Nations Association, Transylvania’s office of community service and civic engagement, and the social science program, the teach-in is FREE and open to the public. For more information, call 859/233-8120.
** Sat/February 10 - The Lexington Philharmonic presents a Pops! concert featuring Cherish the Ladies
The Lexington Philharmonic is again offering Lex Pro readers a ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ ticket deal. This time it’s for Saturday’s Pops! performance featuring the Celtic group Cherish the Ladies at UK’s Singletary Center for the Arts (corner of Euclid and Rose). Here’s a fuller explanation courtesy of our pal Danielle Dove:
Celebrate the haunting melodies, exciting rhythms, and time-honored traditions of Ireland! The award-winning Irish-American group Cherish the Ladies, with guest conductor John Nardolillo, bring the Celtic customs, music, and dance to Lexington. Cherish the Ladies is one of the most sought-after Celtic groups of our time and offer a spectacular blend of thrilling instrumental talents and captivating vocals! Showtime: 8pm. Ticket Prices: $20-42. Buy one ticket, get one free when you mention The Lexington Project. For more info or tickets, call 859/233-4226, 888/494-4226, or visit www.lexphil.org.
** Sun/February 11 - Heartbreaker Alley Cat Bike Race!
A Valentine’s-themed alley cat. Expect an epic 17-20 mile ride. Registration begins at 2:45pm at the corner of Bolivar and S. Broadway (near Hart’s Cleaners). The entry fee is $5 (all the money will be donated to Home At Last Animal Sanctuary). Race starts at 3pm. Participants should 1) bring a detailed map of Lexington, 2) bring a cell phone, 3) bring a messenger bag/backpack, and 4) “dress for your date!” Not only will prizes be awarded for the top male, female, fixed and geared categories, but also for the best dressed (with ‘best’ being a very subjective judgment). Prizes for the race have been donated by Pedal Power, Scheller’s Fitness & Cycling, Pedal the Planet, One Less Car, and Laek House, among others. For more info, email Tim at politicalhero@hotmail.com.
** FREE FLICKS! Bluegrass Film Society at BCTC
Here’s the scoop on the next two weeks of Bluegrass Film Society flicks at BCTC. Remember the change – the films used to screen on Thursdays, now it’s WEDNESDAYS. All films start at 7:45pm in the auditorium in Oswald Building on the campus of the Bluegrass Community and Technical College (aka the old LCC). They’re still FREE and open to everyone. For the full schedule and/or more info, check BFS at http://bluegrassfilmsociety.blogspot.com.

** Through the end of February – “Dandelion Feeds”
The good peeps at the Dandelion Bead Connection (209 Rosemont Garden) are having a food drive for God's Pantry through the month of February. Beaders who need beads can save 10% on supplies if they bring in some canned goods (they ask that you bring in three canned goods for donation). :: Saturday, February 25 – Wednesday March 7 :: Invasive Weed Awareness Week. Governor Fletcher has declared Feb. 25 through March 7, 2007, as Invasive Weed Awareness Week (I suppose it should be “… Awareness Week and Half!). The week is aimed at getting the word out about the threat that invasive non-native plants pose to our native plants and wildlife. Consider what you can do during Invasive Weed Awareness Week and throughout the year to preserve Kentucky's natural heritage. Here are some ideas: when gardening, use native plants wherever possible; contact your legislator to make them aware of the need for laws limiting the use of weeds that spread to natural areas; volunteer to remove invasive plants from a natural area near you; and prevent the spread of invasive plants by cleaning seeds from your boots after hiking in weed-infested areas. Visit KSNPC’s Event Calendar for information about planned activities for the week http://www.naturepreserves.ky.gov/events/

THE APPLES IN STEREO w/CASPER AND THE COOKIES @ The Dame
9pm, ages 21+, $10
THE APPLES IN STEREO @ CD Central, 377 S. Limestone
6pm, all ages, FREE
We all know who The Apples in Stereo are. Founders of renowned record label Elephant 6? Yes. Pillar of the indie pop community? Yes. Best power poppers across the land? Yes! And to top it off, the lead singer is that dude that you always run into in Good Foods. Apart from being one of the most affable, warmest human beings I've ever met, Robert Schneider continues to prove himself to be an astounding songwriter with each and every project. All of his past albums (Apples, Ulysses, Marbles, etc) have illustrated a growth as well as a deep focus on the product at hand. Robert always has a vision and never disappoints. Schneider's latest work is The Apples in Stereo album New Magnetic Wonder, which is being released on Yep Rock/Simian Records Tuesday, February 6th. The album is the band's most ambitious work to date and if you have yet to hear it then you are in for a serious treat. The bells and whistles alone are delightful, but once you really get into the songs and start to truly listen you realize how great they are. The show at The Dame on the 8th is the band's first official show of their mammoth New Magnetic Wonder tour so expect fireworks onstage. Schneider has been performing certain songs from the album live for over a year now. You guys know "Skyway" right? But others have yet to be performed live. I look forward to seeing how the guys recreate overdubbed opuses such as the "Beautiful Machine Pts. 1-4" and wonder if they will even attempt such a thing. And I can only hope that they incorporate some of the album's wonderful link tracks (or interludes according to Janet Jackson) into the live show.
Athens, GA band Casper & the Cookies are joining The Apples in tour. This is a band that is known for their delightfully quirky, energetic performances. (A perfect warm up for any band!) They play fun, up-tempo songs with dueling girl-boy vocals. Though I've never really understood what "twee" means exactly, I still feel like this band embodies the term. Regardless of whether or not you're down with that kinda thing, you won't be able to resist these snazzy dressers as they're bouncing around onstage.
At $10 you'd have to be a fool to miss this show.

WARMER MILKS w/ @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St
9pm, all ages, $3-5
Yeah, hey folks, this Mikey and I'm writing about my own group, Warmer Milks and a show we are playing this Friday at the Icehouse. The lineup consists of us headlining (not sucking as hard as we did at the RADISH ON LIGHT record release party at the same venue. Boy, were we awful. Jesus Christ! All five people at that show walked out. There's actually stuffs worked out for this set, like fire, ice and meat but don't bet on us having showered), along with Speed To Roam (Louisville group featuring dudes from VRKTM and the Superwolf Bonnie Billy band - think trashy Southern cum well read rock burn attack … definitely one of my favorite ROCK groups going today), The Compassionate Tsar (with backing by guys from VRKTM and Parlour. CT is usually one guy, going to town ala Chrome and Flipper playing swordpiss with loner four track mellowosity but this night he’s got friends hurting all over him) as well as hot openers Arhoiii (three piece featuring dudes at the end of their rope, er I mean, members of Caboladies, ATTEMPT and Kraken Fury. Last time I checked this group was doing Fall butthole jams but now I heard they just jam stuff into their buttholes. I'm kidding, they drink beer and play party music, what the f*ck do you think they do?!?!?). This all starts around 8p and you will be asked to leave around midnight. The show is all ages and will cost something around (but not under) three dollars. Hopefully you would give five dollars so that the Icehouse workers can afford to pay for more mittens and the two out of towners can afford gas money to get home. Be sure to bundle up b/c it gets kinda cold up in that piece. Sh!t. Please come celebrate a Friday with us. – Michael Turner

** FREE FLICKS! Bluegrass Film Society at BCTC

All of his past albums (Apples, Ulysses, Marbles, etc) have illustrated a growth as well as a deep focus on the product at hand. Robert always has a vision and never disappoints.

DR. SEUSS's THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T
This is a LIVE ACTION film from 1953, written and designed by Dr. Seuss way before Mike Myers or Jim Carrey even thought about fucking with the classics. Plot: Bart has only one enemy in the world - his piano teacher Dr. Terwilliker. Dr. T has a mad plan to force 500 young boys to practice at his magnificent piano 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bart is the only hope to save these boys from being enslaved. Fantastic sets, screenplay, and even song lyrics were provided by Dr. Seuss. Features the only piano academy ever known to be equipped with cells and surrounded by an electric fence.

Cincy hip hop/jazz duo ISWHAT?! (mc/poet/beatboxer Napoleon Maddox and saxophonist Jack Walker) return to town this time with NYC avant-jazz bassist Joe Fonda in tow. Expect something akin to Common jamming with Mingus and Coltrane. Inserting local flavor and flow to the bill is Lex poet Jude McPherson. If you saw Jude’s reading with Eric Sutherland at Third Street Stuff Coffee a couple weekends ago, you know you don't want to miss this. The whole night is recommended strongly to fans of The Roots, Amiri Baraka, and that NEXT sh!t. More info & free sounds - http://myspace.com/iswhatsince1997.
