::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: THE PICKS :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::: Thurssday, May 17 – Wednesday, May 30 :::::::::::

:: Saturday, May 19 ::
2nd Annual Peace and Global Citizenship Fair featuring performances by DIALECTICS, WATER, DENISE BROWN, REEL WORLD STRING BAND, and more @ Bluegrass Community & Technical College (BCTC), 470 Cooper Drive - 12noon – 8pm, all ages, FREE

A day-long festival of music, poetry, workshops, etc featuring the live-instrument hip hop from of our friends the DIALECTICS and the what-is-it/it’s-everything Latin/Afro sound of WATER … and a ton of other folks. Much more than just a concert. Check out http://peace2day.org for the full scoop and schedule. Note: The event is FREE, but the post-5pm portion of things is a fundraiser for local non-profit The Howe Charities. This Lexington charity describes itself, in part, as follows: "The Howe Charities, Inc. was created to help bring enlightenment to humanity. Supporting women & children leaving abusive relationships, promoting understanding and acceptance of special needs children and adults, bringing music and art into the world to celebrate joy and love, promoting literature and science to help encourage higher levels of thought and understanding are just a few of our goals." (For more information, go to www.howecharities.org/ ). Suggested donation is $5.

:: Saturday, May 19 ::
"Spring Synaesthesia" featuring music by WATER, KARATE JONES DUO, GHUTS, dance by RHEA SPEIGHTS, HANNAH VARGA, and EMILY BRENNER, visual art by JESSE SAXON, ERIC SCHOENBORN, LAURA SHIL, and more @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St - doors 7pm/show 8pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation

A throwback to the early mult-art “Events” of the Action Arts Collective. “Spring Synaesthesia” is a collaborative art party featuring artists from Tuscaloosa, Alabama (the home of the progressive arts non-profit Synaesthetic Arts) and Lexington, at the Icehouse. Expect multimedia mayhem for all the senses including musical performances by Lexington's Water and the Karate Jones Duo, and Ghuts from Alabama, new modern dance works by Synarts founder Rhea Speights and local choreographers Hannah Varga and Emily Brenner, visual art by a long list of peeps including Jesse Saxon, Eric Shoenborn, and Laura Shil, and a dance party featuring Lexington-via-Detroit dj Rob Theakston.

The winter happening at Mecca in December was impressive. Near seemless transitions from dance to musical performance and back, anchored by Eric Schoenborn’s video projections. A well orchestrated blur of short sets that never got dull. I’m always a fan of Jesse Saxon’s artwork, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s got going up. Also anxious to peep the new installation piece by Alabama artist Laura Shil (her darkly funny postcards were among my favorite parts of the last event).

:: Friday, May 19 ::
TIGHT LEATHER w/DIG SHOVEL DIG and CABOLADIES @ Dogtownn, 1026 Manchester - 8pm, all ages, “$2 or $3”

Heavy psych rock and drone … and “probably” pizza and sodas! For those unfamiliar with Dogtown, it’s located at 1026 Manchester St, across from Bluegrass Towing. It’s just a few blocks from the Icehouse. Easily walkable or bike-able if you wanna hop between the two shows.

:: Tuesday, May 22 ::
!!! w/HOLY F*CK @ Southgate House (Newport, KY)
doors 7:30pm/show 8:30pm, ages 18+, $13 advance/$15 at the door

Pummeling dance punk from NYC. Generally, more aggressive and interesting than most of the other bands who fall in the dance punk category, me thinks. Plus I’m a sucker for their silly song titles … for example, “Me And Giuliani Down By The Schoolyard (A True Story)” (from their record Louden Up Now) or “Bend Over Beethoven” (from their new record Myth Takes). http://myspace.com/chkchkchk

:: Wednesday, May 23 ::
Womans 09 vol. 3 featuring CHRIS BUSH, JUSTIN MORGAN, DEWITT SCHNYDER, and CHUCK MORELAND @ ArtsPlace, 161 N. Mill St - 9pm, all ages, $3

A series of experimental music performances (curated by our friend Jason Corder) in the ArtsPlace basement womans dressing room. The series’ third event features solo performances from members of Caboladies (Chris Bush), Rusuden (Justin Morgan … well, I guess Rusuden is also Justin solo), and Tryptamine (Dewitt Schnyder and Chuck Moreland). http://www.offthesky.com/womans

:: Thursday, May 24 ::
TAPES N’ TAPES w/LADYHAWK and HARLEM SHAKES @ Southgate House (Newport, KY) - doors 9pm/show 9:30pm, ages 18+, $10 advance/$12 at the door

Ladyhawk slayed at the Dame a few months back. Minneapolis’ Tapes N’ Tapes were (quite justifiably) the music blog darlings of last summer. Sorry, I’m late for work and sick of fumbling for descriptors. Listen to ‘em at http://myspace.com/ladyhawk, http://myspace.com/tapesntapes, http://myspace.com/harlemshakes.

:: Friday, May 25 ::
WOODY SULLENDER/KEVIN DAVIS duo w/JORDAN MUNSON @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St - doors 8pm/show 8:30pm, all ages, $3 - $5 suggested donation

Woody Sullender/Kevin Davis duo = banjo and cello improv duo from Chicago. Very unique. Perhaps a few of you remember them from their performance with Pauline Oliveros at Mecca a couple years ago. Our friend Jordan Munson is half of the Karate Jones Duo (check ‘em at the Icehouse this Saturday – info above). Immensely talented and creative musician and a genuinely swell guy. Excited to see what he puts together for this show. http://www.deadceo.com/unclewoody/about.html. [Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]
