TLP May 30, 2007
Go see “Triplets of Belleville” tonight at Dogtown and then bike down to the Dame for Kittytwister and Her Hot Dogs. Saturday, check out the graphic novel workshop at the Carnegie Center, then peep the Health & Happiness Family Gospel Band at the Icehouse. Deek Hoi (June 7 at the Icehouse) may be the best band playing in the next two weeks and that’s saying something considering the aforementioned ones and Wrack (June 11 at the Icehouse). Thanks to Greg Abernathy for the list of upcoming nature haps, for helping me sort out all the local bike happenings, and for hipping us to the Wild and Wooly Video 10th anniversary party featuring Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (June 10 at Headliners in Louisville). Check out Vanessa’s yummy new Farmer’s Market Recipe - Shiitake Crostini with Arugula and Bleu. Thanks to J.Todd Dockery, Brian Manley, and Trevor Tremaine for their help with The Picks. Get out! Get out!

VOODOO ORGANIST w/MISS KITTYTWISTER & HER HOT DOGS and PEARLENE
@ The Dame – doors 9pm, ages 21+, $5
Wednesday night on Main Street sounds like a happening time to me. Throw a pool hall at me, and then maybe set a music club next to that, and I think I might venture forth from my hole in the ground. Garnish the nightclub with a Satanic organ player and psycho-billied funband that uses feedback for toothpicks and sings about atomic explosions, and I’m ready to cut some rugs.
The Dame hosts these pleasures this Wednesday night in the forms of the Voodoo Organist, Kittytwister & Her Hot Dogs, and Pearlene, so be prepared to put down your pencils and loosen your dancin’ shoes.
The Voodoo Organist has made several trips to Central Kentucky, and always showers us with the lava he calls love and music. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the Organist, but last time he was suited in full blood-o-rific red, slamming an organ that groaned whilst decked in skulls and moans. He gathered a sound found in the 60’s section of Hell, bound it in his arms, and let it loose with feverish hands shaking over that nutzoid theremin, making volcanism a factor in humanity. His songs took me back to my days of hidden ritualistic fire pits in middle of the woods, making out with tattooed truck driving women, and smoking peace pipes with Mephisto (OK, maybe that was his life and not mine, but it sure was fun pretending). Whatever he’s vocalizing, it makes you feel evil, and feel good about feeling evil.
And make sure you check out his shoes at some point during the evening.
And then the kitten shall twist…Kittytwister brings the meat of Her Hot Dogs back into the buns of downtown Lexington once again, and, well, you probably deserve it. Have you ever actually stood in front of an amplifier when Joe Turner decides to stomp his foot and play one chord? It’ll unalaska Alaska. Joe is one of the chiefs of the tribe when it comes to dirt raunch clamour. It makes your blur face. I mean face blur. I get excited and reverbed out just thinking about it. Mix his Pategonian giant sound with the sway, the screech, the shout and the swing of Miss Kittytwister’s lungs over the sugared pop and sand-blasted rocka rolla that they play and the kids go nuts and pretzels. I’m talking dance music with the means that meet the ends all over the floor. That J. Dock/Sarah Arenasrock rhythm section ain’t half bad, either. Kittybilly? GlamourClamour?
Also down there tonight are the skinny jewels of Cinci’s Dim Mac recording artists Pearlene, who shan’t and can’t be missed. – Brian Manley

THE HEALTH & HAPPINESS FAMILY GOSPEL BAND w/BEER & GAS MONEY and dj sets by BILL WIDENER and KATE HENSLEY @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) – doors 8:30pm/show 9pm, all ages, $3 - $5 suggested donation
"Health & Happiness Family Gospel Band"
I always remember what my cousin Kim's husband Phil said in response to being asked why he didn't go to church: "It takes less of that stuff to do me than it does some people."
I, J. Todd Dockery, of arguably sound mind, speaking to you on this here electronic idiot box, can only make utterance of what I know from direct experience.
First of all, I ain't never seen this band do their thing. And as I understand it, they've only played a couple of shows, recordings forthcoming. Yet, these Louisville-based shakers, bent leanings towards questionable religiosity, have already made Will Oldham's "best of" list of live shows (it was their first and one and only last year) for WIRE. He saw the Health & Happiness Family Gospel Band and knew that it was good. I mean, the man testified.
One of the reasons, if not excuses, for the lack of performances, is that this band is what we in the business refer to as a "side project." And this band in particular is a whole gaggle of "who's who" (or should that be "who made who"?) of Louisville musical talent. They got people playing slide guitar, and I don't know what all. And all of these yahoos play regularly in various other groups around the 'Ville.
What I do know about this band comes from the long-standing professional and emotional relationships I've maintained with one Brian Manley, and one Justin Eslinger.
Eslinger is a long-haired hippie type. I first met him through a gaggle of Louisville louts who make obnoxious music of varying degrees of style, not to mention, loudness. He was the bass player for the Touched, a band that may or may not still be around. He stomps around currently with the purveyors of questionable taste and musical intent, Bad Blood. This whole Health & Happiness deal was his idea initially. And I can testify that, if the band's name perplexes, that this Eslinger son of a bitch took it from the old Hank Williams "Health & Happiness" radio program. I always figured that Eslinger, with his stoned out lengthy locks look, was from Indiana or some shit. When I asked him where he was from he said, "London" (meaning, London, Kentucky for all you squares). And then had the gall to ask me if I had ever been to Manchester.
Well, eastern Kentucky roots will predispose anybody to church music, either towards it or against it. I mean, hell, when I'm driving back home I know I'm getting close when the only thing I can bring in on the car radio is the mainstream country station and local area religious programming. But the point of the Health & Happiness deal is that they do covers of antiquated gospel standards and hymns and present them in a raw, unvarnished fashion. The fervor of spirtiualized mania intact. The sorta antithesis of the "slick" commerciality of the Jesus music racket, which can really test the faithful's gag reflex if your ears ever catch wind of some of this contemporary junk.
Brian Manley ain't from eastern Kentucky. He's from Louisville, and he lives there now. Although the liner notes to the Smacks! compact disc "Here Lieth the Smacks! Protected by the Ejaculation of Serpents" states that he is from Vine Grove (his brother points to this as an exaggeration), but a good number of you know him from his in excess of ten years exile amongst the Philistines of Lexington. I once asked Brian, "How do you think 12 years of Catholic school influenced you?" To which he replied, "It made me hate God." Well, the aforementioned Eslinger recorded about half of the aforementioned Smacks! album, and I guess Eslinger still thought it was a good idea to recruit Manley for mandolin skills and other attributes for this gospel band. Apparently, Brian was either too hungover and/or drunk to fight this recruitment.
I do know that these guys usually practice on Sunday, but I'm betting none of 'em go to church first. Maybe they do. But as Tom Waits, in duet with Keith Richard, once sang, "You can say that it's gospel, but I know it's only church." And that's the point, as far as I understand it from Eslinger and Manley, of the Health & Happiness project: take the gospel away from money changers and put it back in the hands and mouths and instruments of those who seek and/or those who are seeking the direct, ragged, ecstatic presence of the divine.
Beer & Gas Money performing in between a couple of sets by the Health & Happiness Family Gospel Band. Bill Widener, Jr. and Kathleen Hensley DJ-ing it up with some gospel sounds in and around all of it. I guess this all makes for what could be considered to be the first gosh-damn tent revival at the Icehouse this Saturday.
Be there, or just go to hell.

Deek Hoi = exquisite folk pop from Knoxville with the male/female vocal trading that I’m such a sucker for. Do not pass go – go straight to their MySpace page - http://myspace.com/deekhoi - and listen to “Letter from New Omaha” … or “California” … or “Family Song” … you can’t lose, they’re all great. The Joybomb = Big Fresh-ite and occasional, recreational organic farmer Jeremy Midkiff (http://myspace.com/thejoybombs). Three Legged Race = the brilliant solo psychedelic electronic project of Robert Beatty from Eyes & Arms of Smoke and Hair Police. [Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

DEEK HOI w/THE JOYBOMB and THREE LEGGED RACE @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - doors 8pm/show 8:30pm, all ages, $3 - $5 suggested donation
Deek Hoi = exquisite folk pop from Knoxville with the male/female vocal trading that I’m such a sucker for. The group’s last show at the Icehouse (opening for Big Fresh) blew me away (as did their other Lexington appearance, opening for Curtains at Mecca).
