** Sat/May 12 – Appalseeds: An Appalachian Seed Starting Workshop @ the Carnegie Center - FREE
This Saturday, May 12th, in conjunction with Traditional Bank Mayfest (in Gratz Park – right behind the Carnegie Center), the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning (251 W. 2nd St, near the corner of Mill St) will offer a workshop entitled “Appalseeds: An Appalachian Heirloom Seed-Starting Workshop” from noon-2pm. Here’s a brief description from a recent Carnegie Center email: “Bring a little bit of history to your back yard this spring! Discover the stories of some of Appalachia’s nearly-forgotten garden treasures, meet other gardeners from all walks of life, learn to start seeds with recycled materials, and pick up some free sample packs of heirloom tomato seeds.” The workshop led by Julie Maruskin is FREE but registration is required. Call 859/254-4175 to reserve your spot. http://www.carnegieliteracy.org

** Elmwood Stock Farm's Community Supported Agriculture Program
Sign-ups are now underway for Elmwood Stock Farm's 2007 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The farm is offering several new Lexington pickup locations including Beaumont Centre and Hamburg, and three sizes of the weekly produce baskets. Here’s a short explanation of the CSA from a recent Elmwood email: “CSA members participate in their own food supply by committing to share in the harvest of a local farm. Members purchase shares in the spring, and each week we harvest and deliver the vegetables shares. The variety and bounty depend on the season. As Elmwood has successfully developed its vegetable production system over the years using organic and sustainable farming practices, members know they are getting tasty, nutritious food that helps build good health. This is a way to be part of something positive and guarantees your access to the best of each week's harvest!” Visit http://www.elmwoodstockfarm.com/csa.htm for more detailed information and a registration form. Questions? Drop Ambi a line at ann@elmwoodstockfarm.com or call her at 859/621-0755.

** Call for Writing Submissions
A recent email to the Action Arts listserv from our friend Kate Hensley:

Hello Everyone,

As some of you know, I've begun slowly working on what will hopefully and soon be a regional thematic publication, published bi-annually. I have a cluster of writers who've graciously volunteered their free time and submitted/begun pieces for the first issue. I'm looking to expand my horizons and search out new authors in the area who I've never met before, though. Your written word will not be paid monetarily, rather I will lavish you in ceaseless gratitude (and you'll be doing the local culture a favor). That said, I've extended the deadline for all submissions to June 15th, which will be hand-given at an open meeting that evening (details to come on the meeting). Word count is a non-issue, but try not being a beachcomber.

This will be a fun, experimental writing stomping ground for the KY community. Innovative writing is key, exploring with your own keen, exclusive senses and demanding a personal authority over the topic of each issue. The first issue will incite the debate of originality, beginnings and creation. Whichever way you see fit to sending off your two cents, whether it be dramatics, poetry, non-fiction, comic form, experimental fiction, etc., do it to it and be not afraid to contact me.

Also, any artists with interest feel free to explore in this project as well, as this publication will be in technicolor. Each issue will feature a small handful of artists' work.

If you have any questions or interests in this project, please email me at hensley.kathleen@gmail.com.

Thank you and good luck!
Kate Hensley

DANIEL KAHN & THE PAINTED BIRD w/THE SWELLS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St - 9pm, all ages, $3 suggested donation

check it
Chris Sullivan (Swells and Big Maracas), just got back in town this week from New Orleans, while he was there he met and joined in on a few songs with Daniel Kahn and The Painted Bird. The band talked about traveling North to play a few gigs and well, they are, and have chosen to stop over here in Lexington for a night. The Icehouse will serve as the venue for this night of Punk Cabaret, Radical Yiddish Song, Gothic American Folk, and Klezmer Danse Macabre music. The band is fronted by Jewish-Detroiter singer-songwriter Daniel Kahn on vocals, accordion, piano and guitar with East German Bert Hildebrandt on clarinets, US expat composer Michael Tuttle on upright bass, and Swedish jazz drummer Hampus Melin. Some similarities include, Leonard Cohen, Brave Old World, Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Nick Cave, The Pogues, Man Man, and Beirut. Dont miss out on what will be a unique show for this town. The Swells will start out the night at lets say 9pm and The Painted Bird will follow soon after. – Brian Ronk
