Second St – at the corner of Mill St) will host an artist’s reception for Emily Busch’s “The Art of the Common Object” exhibit, as well as a reading by the winners of the Next Great Writers competition. ** An Invitation to Contribute to MakeMineLocal.Com
Our friend Rona Roberts has started a local foods wiki website at www.makeminelocal.com and is looking for peeps interested in helping build out pages on local growers, foods, ingredients, restaurants, and, as Rona said in a recent email, “probably other categories I haven't even begun to imagine” (the site is already growing in many directions with tabs for local distilleries, vineyards, and music, among others). Here’s how she described the project: “Two ideas behind makeminelocal: (1) a website that helps people find local ingredients/foods/restaurants will be good for the people, the community, and our shared environment, and (2) the fastest, best way to produce such a website is to attract a group of people interested in making it by aggregate effort.” Interested in contributing to the effort? Drop Rona a line at rona.Roberts@gmail.com. Rona’s also set up “office hours” to work on the project and help would-be contributors tackle the world of wiki. For the next three weeks, she’ll be camping out at Stella’s New Kentucky Deli (143 Jefferson St – between Short and Second Sts) on Tuesdays from 10-11:30am. Anyone interested in a “little hands-on wiki jump start” (Rona’s learning as she goes along too) is invited to stop by.
** Upcoming In-Store Performances @ CD Central
Two upcoming in-stores at CD Central (377 S. Limestone). Both are FREE and open to all ages. Here’s the scoop from the most recent CD Central newsletter:
>> Wednesday, June 20: PANDA TRANSPORT In-Store Show (7 pm)
Mellow and delicious! Panda Transport is a transcontinental aural meeting of French pop electronica artist SEVERIN 24 and american jazz-pop songstress KATHY COMPTON. Kat and Ti's varying tastes in musical styles are what dictates Panda Transport's sound - a melange of electronic and natural instrumentation, utilizing vocal harmonies, theramin, flute, vocoder, guitars, wood percussion, synths and toys. They have performed in Europe with members of Add N to X and in the U.S. recently supported Girl Talk. Highly recommended for fans of Air, Zero 7, Nouvelle Vague.
>> Thursday, June 28: GENDERS In-Store Show (3 pm)
From Israel come the Genders, a punk rock powerhouse who will grace the CD Central stage at 3 p.m. on July 28. Influenced by AC/DC, the Stooges, the Cult, MC5. Released the CD Rockin' in Ramallah on Canadian label AMP Records in 2005. Will be touring the U.S. to promote the release of a new album, Virgin No. 72. "Straight outta Tel Aviv (!) the bomb-dodging Genders are the slinkiest, kinkiest, ass-rockingest cock n' roll sensation in the Middle East." (Sleazegrinder)
** “Independent Music on Independence Day 2007” Lineup Announced
Steve Baron from CD Central started the “Independent Music on Independence Day” tradition a few years ago (four years? five years?). WRFL joined up as a co-sponsor soon after. It’s hands-down my favorite thing about the 4th of July festivities (honestly, it’s about the only thing I like about the festivities… other than watching Tim Buckingham run in the Bluegrass 10,000). The lineup for this year features the return of Big Fresh! Here’s the full scoop: Wednesday, July 4 at Phoenix Park (adjacent to the Central Branch of the Lexington Public Library at the corner of Main and Limestone), beginning at 10am and running until 5:30pm. 10-10:50am The Swells, 11-11:50am Big Fresh, 1:15-2pm Wussy (from Cincinnati), 3:15-4:15pm 500 Miles to Memphis, 4:30-5:30pm In Endeavors Italya. Of course, it’s FREE and all ages are welcome.
** Tues/June 26 - Auditions – “Anyone of Us: Words From Prison”
Until the Violence Stops: KY festival to end violence against women and girls will hold auditions for “Anyone of Us: Words from Prison,” a play written by Eve Ensler exploring the connection between women in prison and the violence that often brings them there. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, June 26th from 6pm-8:30pm in the Spirits Lounge located inside the Radisson Hotel at 369 W. Vine St. The play will be performed at UK’s Singletary Center for the Arts on August 31. They’re looking for a racially diverse cast of female actors ranging in age from 20-70. Auditions will consist of a cold reading from the script. For more information contact LeTonia Jones at 502/209-5382 or by email at ljones@kdva.org.
** Hip Hop Saturdays at Brooklyn Pizza
NateFX and friends have started a Saturday night hip hop event at Brooklyn Pizza. I haven’t made it out yet, but it seems to have the spirit of the old “Underground Hip Hop” nights at Yat’s. The schedule looks great – this weekend Art of the Covenant w/JK47, next weekend a real treat – Scribbling Idiots and EF Cuttin’. Ages 18+ admitted. Door charge varies depending on who they’ve got booked (both shows I mentioned above are $5). Sounds get going at 10pm. Full info at http://natefx.com.

:::::::::::::::::: FARMER’S MARKET RECIPE :::::::::::::::::::::::::
If any of you have been to the Farmer's Markets recently (and come on, there's more than you can shake a stick at - Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, AND Sunday? And that's not even counting the Bluegrass Farmer's Market but only because I don't know the schedule, not because I'm making some sort of statement? I mean, come ON, people, put down the Wii or whatever and walk around in the actual outside, for g*d's sake), then you might have gotten the sense that things are really starting to HAPPEN. Everywhere you look, there's big, leafy, Green Things. Some are old pals, familiar, like all those lettuces and spinach. Some you might have seen before, like leeks and beets and bok choy and Swiss chard.
And then there's kohlrabi, which looks like an extra from that movie The Abyss.
Anyway, I'm nearing my point, which is that it's not just about the tomatoes, which are, admittedly, coming soon - like another couple of weeks. Which isn't to say that there aren't some fine hydroponic and greenhouse grown 'tucky tomatoes at the market right now. But here, here is the point. Embrace the unfamiliar. Impress your friends. Startle your enemies. Buy some bok choy. Some kohlrabi. Make this salad.
(Use a large bowl - once you get the dresing on, especially if there's an acid like vinegar in it, the salad will eventually shrink down, but you'll need the room in the beginning.)
2 heads kohlrabi, peeled and julienned (slice the bulb thinly, and then cut it into matchsticks. You can use the leaves for something else, like steamed/sauteed/stewed greens)
1 medium head bok choy, chopped - leaves and stems down to about an inch from the base)
3 ribs celery, chopped on the bias (diagonally)
1 bunch green onions
1/2 bunch cilantro
2 Tbsp roasted, salted sunflower seeds
1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger, grated
1 jalapeno (optional)
Toss it all together, and serve with the dressing of your choice. I made this one, and the measurements are approximate, cause I threw it together pretty quickly:
1/4 cup creamy natural peanut butter
1 Tbsp hot sesame oil
2 Tbsp rice vinegar
1/4 cup apple juice
2 Tbsp dark soy sauce
See you at the Market!

VIETNAM w/GREG ASHLEY @ The Dame
doors 9pm, ages 21+, $7
Descriptions from a recent email from Michael Powell (aka Mikey P):
VietNam - A heavy and trippy offering from the Weird New America camp, VietNam, like labelmates Dungen, revel in a sound that marries retro with the forward thinking, music that utilizes sorcery to bring back '60s psychedelia from the dead as a bigger, faster, stronger, and most notably, nosier and more hypnotic entity. Their latest self-titled effort is lush and symphonic while maintaining an analogue grit that conjures up notions of 13th Floor Elevators, or closer to our time, Spiritualized, and a suffocating shuffle stomp that would make a '60s era Brian Jones, or any incarnation of the Brian Jonestown Massacre for that matter, run for cover.
Greg Ashley - You absolutely cannot miss (unless you're a jerk) the astral whisper of Greg Ashley, a heady, spacious psych master who cultivates swells of interstellar grooves so profound that Ashley is sure to fill the chasm left by Syd Barrett and Alexander Skip Spence. As your new favorite jam vendor, he has seen the true face of God.
Fanged Robot - loud-as-hell garage jangle duo.

REAL LIVE TIGERS w/KELLI SHAY HICKS, TAKE MY WORD, and more
@ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) – 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation
Austin’s Real Live Tigers (for this tour Tony Presley solo) and Nashville’s Kelli Shay Hicks = part of “the new sincerity” folk movement. Earnest but not obnoxiously or boringly so. Presley’s played shows with Calvin Johnson, Xiu Xiu, and Mount Eerie (aka the Microphones). Hicks has shared bills with Michael Hurley and Jana Hunter. Whatever. Tony contributed vocals to Karl Blau’s new record “Dance Positive.” That’s enough cred for me. Take My Word = Lexington straight edge hardcore featuring our friend Joe Manley. There will probably be a couple other folks added to the bill. KEN VANDERMARK/TIM DAISY DUO @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell)
doors 8pm/show 8:30pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation
Yeah, it’s not quite in the designated timeframe, but I’m so excited about this show I wanted to go ahead and mention it. Saxophonist Vandermark is one of the truly propulsive forces in jazz today, both as a player/composer and as an organizer in the global free jazz scene. This will be his first Lexington performance since his Vandermark 5 group packed the Underlying Themes loft on Super Bowl Sunday a year and a half ago. Meanwhile, drummer Tim Daisy is a punk-ass poser with a weak jump shot and barely any ball handling skills. If I see him out on the courts at Woodland Park again, there’s gonna be trouble. http://www.kenvandermark.com, http://www.timdaisy.com

:::::::::::::::::: FARMER’S MARKET RECIPE :::::::::::::::::::::::::

[Full Disclosure: Mikey P works at The Dame.]

Summary: Beautiful folk, hardcore, and FREE ice cream. http://myspace.com/reallivetigers, http://www.kellishayhicks.com, http://myspace.com/takemyword, http://myspace.com/icehouselex.
