:::::::::::::::::::::::: Announcements :::::::::::::::::::::::::::

** “A Void Busters” - FREE Thursday night shows @ Busters
Void Skate Shop and Busters (corner Main and Upper – next to the Dame) have teamed up to present a series of FREE shows this summer. Every Thursday throughout the summer, you’ll find free entertainment (and oftentimes free pizza!) at our favorite bar. Tomorrow (July 12), it’s Idaho, Alaska with Brando and the Phantasmos. Next Thursday (July 19), it’s Jason Zavala with New Jersey’s Ill Ease. (See ‘The Picks’ for more info.)

** Music at POPS
Our friends at POPS Resale (in the Meadowthorpe Shopping Centre on Leestown Rd – home to the most wonderfully overwhelming collection of used vinyl in Lexington … the world?!) have started hosting music events. A mix of live music and djs. They’ve got Matt Dacey spinning Metal on Friday, the 20th (at 4pm). Then, a live set by Shivas Iron on Saturday, the 21st. And, on Saturday, the 28th, it’s DJ Otis Badass spinning country. For full info, check out http://myspace.com/popsresale.

** Coming UP! Fri & Sat/July 27 & 28 - The Forecastle Festival in Louisville!

An early reminder. Art, Music, Activism. Performances by De La Soul, Particle, High Water Marks, Scourge of the Sea, Aloha, Cheer Accident, and tons more. Full scoop at http://www.forecastlefest.com.

:: Thursday, July 12 ::
IDAHO, ALASKA w/BRANDO AND THE PHANTASMOS @ Busters, corner of Main and Upper
10pm, ages 21+, FREE

Idaho, Alaska = new local indie rock band. Recommended to fans of Modest Mouse and 764-HERO. http://myspace.com/idahoalaska. Brando and the Phantasmos = pop that rambles stylistically in every which direction. From silly to sincere, from country-ish bounce to electro-influenced, Brandon Shields and crew carry it off with pluck. http://myspace.com/brandophantasmo.

:: Sunday, July 15 ::
CRIME IN STEREO w/ATTITUDE, HANK JONES, and TAKE MY WORD @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St
6:30pm (sharp!), all ages, $5 suggested donation

Crime In Stereo = melodic hardcore punk from Levittown, NY. Catchy as all hell. ("Bicycles For Afghanistan" is my favorite off their MySpace page.) Attitude = big rock influenced hardcore from Syracuse, NY. Take My Word = straight-edge hardcore from Lexington. Their set a couple weeks ago at the Icehouse with Real Live Tigers, Heartthrob, et al was great. Sorry, I don't know anything about Hank Jones. http://myspace.com/crimeinstereo, http://myspace.com/attitudehc, http://myspace.com/takemyword

:: Wednesday, July 18 ::
Women’s 09 vol. 5 featuring CAVES, DARYL COOK, and OFF THE SKY @ ArtsPlace basement, 161 N. Mill St. - 9pm, all ages, $3

The fifth show in Jason Corder’s experimental music series in the women’s dressing room in the ArtsPlace basement. Caves = Ben Allen. Daryl Cook = Sassy Daryl, aka Walter Carson. Off The Sky = the aforementioned Mr. Corder.

:: Thursday, July 19 ::
JASON ZAVALA w/ILL EASE, and dj sets by JC SAXON @ Buster’s, corner of Main and Upper
10pm, ages 21+, FREE

Everybody loves JZ, former front-man/primary songwriter for the Elephants, right? Dramatic odd-ball pop in the vein of Frog Eyes, Jim McIntyre, Arcade Fire, They Shoot Horses Don’t They?, and Judith Berkson. Ill Ease = New Jersey’s Elizabeth Sharp and occasional contributors. In this case, I’m pretty sure it’s just E-Sharp. Picture the sharp-witted spawn of Maureen Tucker (Velvet Underground, m’f’ers!). Simple, catchy, driving, biting and funny, art scuzz anthems. Check out http://myspace.com/illease. NOTE: There’s no cover charge, but someone will likely pass the hat to get some gas money for Elizabeth. So, bring a couple extra bucks to pitch in.

:: Thursday, July 19 ::
THE GOURDS w/DAVID CHILDERS @ The Dame
doors 9pm, ages 21+, $10

The Gourds are a fun, literate honky-tonk band from Austin, TX. However, in the longrun, I’m afraid, all they’ll be remembered for is their hillbilly cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” (you can hear it at http://myspace.com/thegourds - for my money, Hip Hop Nation did a better cover at the 4th of July festivities this year). http://myspace.com/thegourdstx.

:: Friday, July 20 ::
HIGH WATER MARKS w/JE SUIS FRANCE @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St
8pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation, FREE food from Gumbo Ya Ya & FREE ice cream

Yup, FREE Gumbo Ya Ya grub (including a vegan option) & FREE ice cream & two killer bands!

Je Suis France = good time party dudes from Athens, GA (well … the band started in Athens and some of the members still live there, but a few have spread out to other locales – Boston, Atlanta, San Fran, etc) including members of Masters of the Hemisphere, Still Flyin’, and The Wee Turtles. Dave Condra wrote a nice description for the “Gig-Bites!” column in July’s Nougat. Here it is: “Je Suis France play idiosyncratic space-pop ranging from noisy indie-rock ala Built to Spill or Folk Implosion to drug-jams sounding something like Butthole Surfers meets Grateful Dead.” Live, the France are completely debaucherous fun. http://myspace.com/jesuisfrancejams

High Water Marks = propulsive wall-of-sound jangle rock from members/ex-members of Apples in Stereo, Palermo, LFUCS, Von Hemmling, Oranger, and The Fakes. I love them. They’re getting ready to release a new record. You’ll find two of the new tracks on the FREE Icehouse shows sampler cd. Look for copies at the usual spots around town (should be at CD Central, Gumbo Ya Ya, and some of the coffee shops by the end of the day). http://myspace.com/thehighwatermarks
[Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Friday, July 20 ::
