TLP October 12, 2007

Is this thing on? Yup! The TLP listserv has been down for over a month. Fixed now, I think. So, a short issue to help me get back in the swing of things. I’ll hope to have a full issue out the middle of next week.

Go see the Oxford Farm Report, We Versus The Shark, and The Great White Jenkins TONIGHT at the Icehouse. Check Man Man and Wax Fang at the Dame tomorrow. These Are Powers will rule you on Monday. Drag your zombie dancing shoes out of the closet.

Luv, Ross

** It’s ‘Thriller’ time …
Been a lot of back and forth about whether or not Mecca’s recreation of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller!” video, Lexington’s unofficial Halloween parade for six years running, was gonna go down this year. Thankfully, it is. The whens, wheres, hows are still being sorted out, but there’s no time to waste in gathering the zombie ensemble. Here’s an email inviting participation from our pal Teresa Tomb:

“Greetings faithful zombies! Its about that time for the annual Thriller showdown in big LexVegas! Our apologies for the late notice of things, but our planning efforts have been thwarted somewhat by various things. We are in full force now, however, so get your gross things out and get ready to play!

This year, we'll also be participating in the global "Thrill the World" event: http://www.thrilltheworld.com to break the GWR--a vision we had joked about when we created the event, which has now blossomed into a crazy madness! Very exciting!

I do have a bit of bad news too...we are seeking a Michael and an Ola this year. Our amazing Micah Isaacs, who has played the part of Michael since the creation of this event, is not able to join us this year. It is breaking my heart to do it without him, but If you know anyone interested, let us know.

Okay...the times for the dance rehearsals are: Saturdays Noon-1p.m. and Mondays 6-7p.m. at Mecca Studio, 451 B Chair Avenue (right off South Broadway).” Questions? Email info@meccadance.com.

** CD Central T-Shirt Design Contest
From our friends at CD Central – “Seems like a good time to work up a new CD Central t-shirt design, and this time we're putting the design in YOUR hands. Yes, it's our first ever T-Shirt Design Contest! Submit your design by October 15 and if we choose your entry, you'll win fame and fortune (actually, a $50 CD Central gift certificate), as well as two t-shirts as soon as we get 'em printed. Here are some basic quidelines:
1. Be original! No "spinning CD" logos, OK? The design should print with one or two colors of ink.
2. Keep it clean, and nothing that'll get us in trouble with the copyright authorities, police, etc.
3. The name "CD Central" should appear somewhere in the design, and it wouldn't hurt to include "Lexington, Ky." as well.
4. Design entries can be submitted in low resolution JPEG, TIFF or PDF format. However, if your design is selected as the winner, we will need to get a high resolution file from you. Illustrator EPS files or high resolution TIFF files are best.
5. Have fun, and send your design to news@cdcentralmusic.com”

THE OXFORD FARM REPORT cd release party w/WE VERSUS THE SHARK, and THE GREAT WHITE JENKINS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) – 8pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation

The Oxford Farm Report = exciting, theatric mix of prog/post-punk/no wave/carnival music with enough startling mid-song changes to give you whiplash. Celebrating the release of their first full length cd. http://myspace.com/theoxfordfarmreport

We Versus The Shark = angular post-punk/no wave goodness from Athens, GA. http://myspace.com/weversustheshark

The Great White Jenkins = orchestrated soul-folk with mournful horns and soaring vocals. http://myspace.com/thegreatwhitejenkins
[Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

HASTE THE DAY w/IT DIES TODAY, PROTEST THE HERO, SO THEY SAY, and THROUGH TRIALS @ UK’s Student Center Ballroom – doors 6pm/show starts 7pm, all ages, FREE – sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM, CD Central, and Gumbo Ya Ya

A huge, FREE hardcore show organized by our friend John Winters (aka Counterfiction Productions) as a farewell gift to the Lexington all ages scene. (John announced the end of Counterfiction this summer after being jerked-around one too many times by a venue operator.) I’ll admit that, musically, this ain’t my thing. However, the passion and energy that John has put into presenting all ages shows in town over the last three years has been an inspiration to me. Hard to see a brother in arms get beat down by the constant struggle of putting together all ages events. His efforts will be missed.

:: Saturday, October 13 ::
MAN MAN w/WAX FANG @ The Dame
doors 9pm/show 10pm, ages 21+, $7

No need to reinvent the wheel, right? Right. I liked Lexington Herald-Leader pop culture writer Jamie Gumbrecht’s description of Man Man on her “It’s All About” blog (http://itsallabout.typepad.com/), so I’ll let her tell you about the band - “Imagine what Franz Ferdinand might sound like if they became carnies. Or what Gogol Bordello might sound like if they cleaned up just a tad. That'd leave you with the band Man Man, described quite accurately on wikipedia as "playfully existential United States Viking-vaudeville punk-wop rock-and-soul collective."” http://www.wearemanman.com/manman.html. Don’t sleep on Louisville’s Wax Fang either. BIG fun rock.

:: Monday, October 15 ::
THESE ARE POWERS w/TIGHT LEATHER, and CELEPHAIS @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) – 8pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation

These Are Powers = intense "ghost-punk" (think dark female-fronted no wave - or, as the description on their disc at WRFL said, "creepy in a good way") trio from NYC featuring ex-members of Liars and Knife Skills. Recommended to fans of Silver Daggers, Shock Cinema, Lydia Lunch. myspace.com/thesearepowers. DO NOT MISS THEM!

Tight Leather = yeah, you know 'em ... Lexington heavy psych heroes. myspace.com/tightleather1

Celephais = Atlanta loudness on Hoss Records.
[Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Monday, October 15 ::
BLACK MOUNTAIN w/WAX FANG, and THE CAVE SINGER @ Headliners (Louisville)
9pm, ages 18+, $12

Black Mountain = monstrous rock from Vancouver… big, heavy, drugged-out Sabbath-esque rawk. Saw them at Uncle Pleasants in Louisville two years ago. One of my favorite shows ever. For real. If’n I weren’t hosting These Are Powers at the Icehouse (which I think I’ve already mentioned that I’m REALLY excited about), I would be juicing up the truck and driving to Louisville. Check ‘em at http://myspace.com/blackmountain
