TLP October 19, 2007

OK ... Maybe I'm going weekly with this thing. Can't seem to get through two weeks worth of previews. I gloss over looking at all the different happenings. Perhaps it's just the slew of things happening the week of Halloween. Whatever the case, this is another week-long list of previews. Expect another edition in your inbox sometime next week.

DO NOT MISS the 'Saudades' art party at the Icehouse on Saturday. Heck, you might as well just bring a sleeping bag and stay 'cause you're gonna want to be back at the Icehouse for MV/EE et al on Wednesday and Mammal/Cadaver in Drag on Friday. On Thursday, venture up to Al's for a FREE show by Brando & The Phantasmos, then bike back to Main St to catch Del the Funky Homosapien at the Dame. Saturday, 'Thrill the World' at Mecca.

Thanks to Greg Abernathy for compiling the outdoor and bike happenings.

Happy Birthday, Ollie.

Luv, Ross

** TONIGHT! Fri/Oct 19 – FREE in-store at CD Central – Jason Isbell
This evening at 6pm, CD Central, 377 S. Limestone, plays host to a FREE in-store solo, acoustic performance by Jason Isbell, formerly of the Drive-By Truckers. All ages are welcome. Note: If you can't make the in-store gig, you can catch Isbell with his full band later tonight at the Dame.

** Sat/Oct 27 - Thrill The World Lexington
Next Saturday, Mecca is participating in a wonderfully silly event called "Thrill the World," an attempt to establish a Guinness World Record for the number of people concurrently doing the choreography from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video worldwide. Of course, the event dovetails nicely with the studio's annual Halloween recreation of the video in the streets downtown. So, "Thrill the World" will go down at Mecca, 451 Chair Avenue, at 6pm on Saturday, the 27th. The full schedule for the day goes like his - 12-1pm dance rehearsal, 4:30-5 registration, 5-6 parade breakdown, 6-6:02 pm dance sequence (i.e. the official participation). So, zombies, brush up on your dance steps and be a part of setting a world record. The rest of you, plan to come out for the "Thriller" parade on Sunday, the 28th, beginning at 7pm in front of the Kentucky Theatre. Questions? Contact the studio at info@meccadance.com. For general info about "Thrill the World," visit http://www.thrilltheworld.com/news.html.

"Saudades" art event featuring 30 Lexington artists @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (off W. Maxwell) - 8pm-1am, all ages, FREE (donations are accepted)

I keep calling this an 'art event.' Really this is an art PARTY - a full-fledge happening, a celebration of Lexington do-it-yourself arts culture featuring works by 30+ emerging Lexington visual artists, food to share, dj's and dancing. I've had a sneak peek of the works over the past three days as artists dropped off work and Ed (Franklin, aka Sqecial Ed), Ellen (Molle), and Caitlin (Heinz) slaved to recreate the space. Haven't been this excited about an art show in awhile. Works by most all my favorite local artists - Bill Santen, Brian and Sara Turner, Shilpi Gupta, Talena Sanders, Ed Franklin, Alex Brooks, Jesse Saxon, Dawn Graham, Lina Tharsing ... geez, I should've just cut and paste the entire artist list - I love all of them. Anyway, treat this as your one-stop Gallery Hop for October and a glance at what's to come in Lexington. The party starts at 8pm. DJ's will be spinning straight through til 1am. You do not want to miss this. For more info, visit http://www.charlesmansion.org/saudades

:: Tuesday, October 23 ::

Music, FREE food (made with Kentucky grown/raised ingredients), and a chance to learn about progressive activism in Lexington and around the state. For full info check out http://www.kftc.org/calendar/events/concert-for-the-commonwealth/view

:: Wednesday, October 24 ::

MV/EE w/CAKES OF LIGHT, MATT WESTON, and HAREM WOMEN @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (off W. Maxwell)- 8pm, all ages, $5 suggested donation

A packed bill. The New England contingent includes Vermont psych-folk pioneers (Valentine's Tower Recordings preceded Devendra by a full decade) and Ecstatic Peace recording artists MV/EE (aka Matt Valentine & Erika Elder), meticulous Western Massachusetts weirdo percussionist/electronicist Matt Weston, and Lex-patriate/Brooklynite Jay Dunbar (Cakes of Light). Harem Women is the guitar/drum enslaught of Daryl Cook (Walter Carson) and Trevor Tremaine (Hair Police, Eyes & Arms of Smoke). Not a stinker in the bunch. http://myspace.com/mveebummerroad, http://www.mattweston.com, http://myspace.com/cakesoflight
[Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Thursday, October 25 ::
BRANDO & THE PHANTASMOS @ Al’s Bar, corner of Sixth and Limestone
9pm, ages 21+, FREE

A new locale for music. Our friends at Al's have just started hosting shows. Think they aim to make it an every Thursday happening. If you haven't been in for sweet potato fries and a Fuego (tequilla and jalapeno simple syrup = yummy), you need to go. This is a perfect opportunity. Brando y Phantasmos = joyous, goofy, always clever pop that's not bound by stylistic constraints. One of my favorite new local outfits. http://myspace.com/brandophantasmo.

:: Thursday, October 25 ::
DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN w/DEVIN THE DUDE, BUKUE ONE, and JUNK SCIENCE feat. ILLER THAN THEIRS @ The Dame – 9pm, ages 21+, $12/$15

The Dame and Nate FX have put Lexington on the map for touring indie hip hop artists. A quick list to illustrated the claim ... Blackalicious, the Pharcyde, C-Rayz Walz, Ming & FS, Souls of Mischief ... I'm know I'm leaving out a ton of people, but that's a pretty impressive run as is. So, first off, thanks to Nate and the Dame. With Del you get the coolest, wittiest of the laid-back West Coast hip hoppers. Recommended if you like heady hip hop that doesn't take itself too seriously, and, well, any of the folks I mentioned above.

:: Friday, October 26 ::
MAMMAL w/CADAVER IN DRAG, PARANOID TIME, and EYES & ARMS OF SMOKE @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation

Mammal, heavy Detroit electronics, headlines, but Cadaver in Drag is the rub. Heavy psych monster rock. Don't know if the guys would agree, but they reminded me of Black Mountain when they opened for Shock Cinema and Dragons of Zynth at the Icehouse last month. You can check sounds at http://myspace.com/cadaverindrag, but don't expect them necessarily to replicate those sonics live. They's some shape-shiftin mamajammers. http://myspace.com/doublenature (Mammal), http://www.snse.net/paranoidtime, http://www.eyesandarmsofsmoke.com

:: Saturday, October 27 ::
JOHN WIESE & SPENCER YEH w/CARLOS GIFFONI, PAX TITANIA, and THREE LEGGED RACE @ The Void, 518 E. High St - 8pm, all ages, $3 - sponsored by WRFL 88.1FM

Another new part-time venue. The first RFL-sponsored show at the Void, Lexington's priemere skateshop, includes the return of Lex-patriate Chris Cprek (Pax Titania). Expect heavy improv sounds. Here are links to more info and sounds courtesy of the Charles Mansion listserv -
