:: Wednesday, October 31 ::
The Void’s HALLOWEEN SKATEFEST @ Woodland Park
4-9pm, all ages, FREE

Start your Halloween festivities early with the party in the park. Costumed skate contest, FREE food, music from THE ALL AMERICAN WEREWOLVES, KILLY TOBY WYATT, THE INFECTED, CHUBBY BEHEMOTH, and THE MORNING GLORIES, a best costume contest with tons of prizes, and more. Kudos to Reid and the Void for partnering up with LFUCG Parks & Rec, WRFL, and just about every small business in Lexington (The Black Market, CD Central, Charmed Life Tattoo, Stella’s, Dogtown, Smiley Pete, Puccini’s … and on and on) to make this happen.

:: Wednesday, October 31 ::
Lexington’s 2nd Annual Alleycat Race – beginning at Woodland Park (meet in the area next to the skatepark) - pre-race parade loop through downtown at 7pm, race registration at 8pm, race begins at 8:30pm - after-party at The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell)

The 2nd annual Halloween Alleycat race. Show up early for the pre-race parade loop through downtown. The meet-up for that is at 7pm at the corner of High St and Kentucky Ave. If you’ve not ridden in an alleycat before, this is a great one to jump into. More of an event than a race (though there will still be prizes for the top finishers). Lots of goofy fun and not an uber-competitive vibe. As Brian Turner said in a recent email – “Expect a fun night of the unexpected - there will be many components of the race (checkpoints, off-bike tasks, secret stops, and possibly even a scavenger hunt element), with many opportunities for prizes throughout.” Registration is $5. Costumes are a MUST. You’ll need a messenger bag or some other way to carry things you’ll pick up at the race checkpoints. The race ends at The Icehouse and then the party commences. Music and horror movies on the big screen. Do it, do it.

:: Wednesday, October 31 ::
“The Freakshow 2007” featuring THE DIALECTICS @ Capoeira Cultural Center, 758 N. Limestone (on the right just before Limestone hits Loudon – parking is available next to the Center) - 9pm – 1am, all ages, $5

The first of two good excuses to explore the N. Limestone renaissance. The Capoeira Cultural Center grew out of the ashes of Firebird Studio (y’all remember that little spot next door to Gallerie Soleil on Short St, right?). Firebird used to host all ages shows pretty regularly until their landlords pitched a fit. This is the first party/show happening that I known about in the new space. Expect a funky Halloween spectacle with live hip hop sounds from our friends, the Dialelctics, prizes for the best/most creative costumes, and all that jazz.

:: Thursday, November 1 ::
TINA COFER @ Al’s Bar, corner of 6th and N. Limestone
9pm, ages 21+, FREE

Yup - the second of your good excuses to head North on Limestone. As I think I mentioned in a previous issue, Al’s has begun presenting FREE shows every Thursday night. Nothing beats a free show at a bar. Puts everyone in a good mood. Tina = hard strumming guitar folk augmented with violin (played by Ondine Quinn). Check her cover of TV On The Radio’s “Wolf Like Me” on her Myspace page – http://myspace.com/tinamariacofer. IMPORTANT NOTE: Music starts and finishes early, so don’t be late. I rolled in around 10:30 or 11 last week in an attempt to catch Brando and the Phantasmos. Music was long done.

:: Friday, November 2 ::
SYMBIANCE’s “Monster Mash Party” @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell)
9pm, all ages, $3 suggested donation

Chilled-out, jammed-out post-Halloween costume party headlined by Symbiance. http://myspace.com/symbiance

:: Saturday, November 3 ::
THE HEALTH & HAPPINESS FAMILY GOSPEL BAND @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell) - 8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation

Gospel sounds ranging from traditional Appalachian to Otis Redding to Johnny Cash and beyond delivered with ecstatic gusto by ten Louisvillians (including Lex-patriate/half of the Smacks!, Brian Manley), who have walked and still walk the punk rock life. Health & Happiness' show at the Icehouse in June had all the sweaty energy of a tent revival. Check out a clip, courtesy of our friend Tim Stamps - http://youtube.com/watch?v=1EgT8lUUv9Q. [Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

:: Saturday, November 3 ::
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY @ The Dame
10pm, ages 21+, $6

Wish this wasn’t the same night as Health & Happiness. Oh, well, it’s nice to have options. Holly Golightly = prolific British songstress; “a blend of pre-rock electric blues, folk rock, and less frantic rock & roll” (AllMusic.com). Some of you of course remember her as one of Thee Headcoatees. Find music, better descriptions, and more info at http://www.hollygolightly.com/.
