Awight, this one takes you through the middle of next week. The beginning of the holidaze is upon us. Fight back immediately with the FREE Vampire Weekend show at Old Tarr next Sunday (below you’ll find a ridiculous amount of details and a ‘cute band alert’ courtesy of Eli Riveire). Great tunes at the Icehouse Saturday (Tight Leather/The N.E.C./Caboladies) and Tuesday (members of Wolf Eyes, Hair Police, and Eyes & Arms of Smoke). Buy art. Get ready for the bike parade on December 1st. Have fun.

** Sun/November 25 – VAMPIRE WEEKEND !!! FREE !!! at Old Tarr Distillery
Can’t tell y’all how excited I am about this show! Next Sunday, WRFL 88.1FM, YouAintNoPicasso.com, CD Central and a slew of other good-hearted locals present the pure party fun of NYC's Vampire Weekend at Old Tarr Distillery (899 Manchester St – at the intersection of Pine and Manchester – just a couple/three blocks from the Icehouse). Fresh off a European tour with The Shins and recently signed to XL Recordings (the home of The White Stripes, M.I.A., and Devendra Banhart, among others), these young fellas channel Afro-pop through their indie pop to create a sub-genre they jokingly refer to as "Upper West Side Soweto." The result is, as Nick Kidd wrote in the most recent Nougat magazine, "a commendable balance between the cerebral songcraft of Graceland-era Paul Simon and the carefree vibes of Pavement." The show is completely FREE and open to ALL AGES. Yup, almost too good to be true. Well, it gets better! In addition to the good time sounds (Lexington favorites High Water Marks and The Nastys - formerly Hot Models - round out the bill), there'll be FREE food from Gumbo Ya Ya, FREE coffee, cider, and goodies from Third St Stuff Coffee, colorful atmosphere designed by our neighbors at Sqecial Media, and a holiday art/hip crafts market to satisfy all your gift giving needs.
Here’s how it’s gonna break down hour by hour …
> 6pm doors open – yeah, get there early to be sure you score FREE grub from Gumbo Ya Ya and get first dibs on all the cool crafty stuff – Rakadu Gypsy Dance will likely do a short set around 6:30 (p’haps another set after the Nastys play)
> 7pm – The Nastys rock it
> around 8pm – The High Water Marks play (and, again, make you wish they were able to play more frequently)
> around 9pm – the NYC boys take the stage and we all dance our asses off!
> afterwards – perhaps a dance party or perhaps we just go home smiling

An opportunity to grab some fine art for your loved ones this holiday season (or p’haps just for yourself). The 2nd Annual Lex Arts’ sponsored “Buy ART!” market, featuring works by a ton of talented local/regional artists, kicks off on Friday, November 23rd on the first floor of Victorian Square Shoppes. ** Sat/December 1 – Holiday Bike Parade
A heads-up/invite from our man Tim “Big Papa” Buckingham -
Bike culture is growing exponentially in Lexington. Join local riders as an entry in this years Holiday Parade on Saturday Dec. 1 at 5:30pm. The route is short extending from Midland Ave., up Main St. to the Courthouse plaza for Light up Lexington.
Decorate your bike, join the yellow bike dance troop, help pull the float, do anything you want on your bike. LFUCG's Bike Lexington Committee has donated 200 blinking red lights to pass out along the route.
Come help build or decorate your bike on the day of the parade (Dec.1) at 333 Midland Place at the intersection of Midland Ave and Winchester Rd starting at 11 a.m.
Other possible ideas include but are not limited to:
- Chinese Dragon Tandem - Procession of all xtracycles in town hauling people and gifts
- Bike polo game during parade (or simulated) - Tall bikes, short bikes, choppers, etc - Unicycles

Wanted to give an early heads-up about this event. Wednesday, December 5th, WRFL and CharlesMansion.org present the Sublime Frequencies Film Tour, a pair of films by Sun City Girls confidante Hisham Mayet, at The Cat’s Den in the UK Student Center (it’s located across the walkway from the UK Bookstore). If you’re like me, you either didn’t make it to all the galleries you would’ve liked during Gallery Hop last Friday or you did make it but the crowds didn’t allow for much contemplation of the art. Well, don’t give up. Find some time this holiday week to spend some time with an exhibit or two. I’m looking forward to checking out the Bill Santen curated “Bad Luck” exhibit at Transy’s Morlan Gallery and the “Salad Days” letterpress exhibit at the DAC.

oh, but ladies, don't worry. there's enough thermal energy for everyone - there are four different boys to admire on sunday night. that's eight different eyes in which to get lost. eight different long, veiny arms and hands to imagine on places other than their respective instruments. four different tousled hairstyles to dream about running your fingers though, and eight different opportunities to catch some hot argyle socks peeking out from under four sets of just-a-little-too-short pants.
so basically, if you know what's good for you (and your dear little libido), you can't (CAN'T) miss their show on sunday night at old tarr. the delightful new yorkers won't be the only eye candy – local lovelies the high water marks will also be on display. and you KNOW what i'm talkin' about there. hotties all around!

TIGHT LEATHER are the band you’re gonna need to know in order to continue being anyone in this town. They play impossibly hard and heavy garage/psych, and possess that rare knack for exploring dynamics without forsaking the physical intensity of rock and roll, like if Monster Movie-era Can had premonitions of The Fall and PiL’s Metal Box. Reid Small and Mark Murray are a downright VICIOUS rhythm section, with Small’s remarkable vocals channeling Arthur Lee plummeting down a well, and Murray wrenching righteously ungroovy grooves out of a Jazzmaster while wearing most of his homemade electronics rig on his belt á la Data from the Goonies. And Case Mahan and J.C. Saxon are the most exquisitely mismatched guitar duo since fuckin’ Lee and Thurston: tremolo-corrupted surf dementia struggling against panicked stabs of adolescent delay anguish. THE N.E.C. are from Atlanta, and judging from the material on their MySpace page (so what?), they kick out some gritty Detroit jams peppered with inspired Kraut moves. Ain’t seen ‘em live, but this sorta stuff played loud is never bad. http://www.myspace.com/thenec
CABOLADIES are yet another miraculous development for Central Kentucky. Despite their penchant for synthesis via some suspiciously expensive-looking gear, their music has an organic, tidal feel, minus all the hippie-dippie baggage that that might imply. Indeed, "psychedelic" is an almost offensively deficient term for the contours of the temporary universe summoned by the drones, mismatched loops, and distant lulls of these fine gents… excuse me, LADIES. http://www.myspace.com/caboladies

I’ll keep it short here, since I rambled through all the show details in the Announcements section. Vampire Weekend = wonderfully fun indie pop with African pop leanings from NYC. No doubt, the catchiest shite you’ll hear this year. The High Water Marks = bouncy, wall-of-sound fuzz pop from members/former members of the Apples in Stereo, Palermo, Oranger, and The Fakes. Their new record, “Polar,” was just released on Athens’ Happy Happy Birthday To Me. The Nastys (aka the band formerly known as Hot Models) = young Lexers playing revved-up, blues-inflected psych rock. One of my favorite new local bands. Rakadu shakes it likes it means it whether it’s straight up tribal-style or warped gypsy theater cabaret fun (have you seen their piece set to Man Man’s “Engwish Bwudd”?!). FREE food, coffee, goodies, a holiday art/hip crafts market, and GREAT music – if you’ve got something better to do, DAMN, tell me and I’ll do it too. [Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]

hold on to your hearts and get ready to restrain your russian impulses and roman hands. new york's finest-looking young things are coming to town to serenade you (yes, YOU!) into submission. when vampire weekend rolls into town this weekend, the sky will turn just a little pinker. the few remaining green leaves around will finally turn deep red. open the window - maybe instead of smelling peanut butter, the soft scent of sweet sugar will grace your olfactory nerves. yes my friends, love will be in the air, or at least deep lust.
ladies, these boys are HOT. and i don't just mean cute. these are the types of boys who know not only know what a mansard roof is, but also don't mind singing about it. they just don't give a FUCK about oxford commas. mmhmm. break me off a piece of those english composition rebels. they are preparatory east coast style infused with big city sensibilities and experimentation. they'll go out dancing with you at the dive bar, guzzling down jack-and-cokes, and then be happy to meet your parents for lunch, in a strikingly fashionable sweater, of course. they'll make you wanna shake your booty from the window to the wall, if only just to try to steal their gazes...from each other. even boys know they're hot. ross compton, nov. 17, 2007, 11:04 am: "is someone doing a jigsaw puzzle in here? oh, but ladies, don't worry. there's enough thermal energy for everyone - there are four different boys to admire on sunday night. that's eight different eyes in which to get lost. eight different long, veiny arms and hands to imagine on places other than their respective instruments. four different tousled hairstyles to dream about running your fingers though, and eight different opportunities to catch some hot argyle socks peeking out from under four sets of just-a-little-too-short pants.
so basically, if you know what's good for you (and your dear little libido), you can't (CAN'T) miss their show on sunday night at old tarr. the delightful new yorkers won't be the only eye candy – local lovelies the high water marks will also be on display. and you KNOW what i'm talkin' about there. hotties all around!

TIGHT LEATHER are the band you’re gonna need to know in order to continue being anyone in this town. They play impossibly hard and heavy garage/psych, and possess that rare knack for exploring dynamics without forsaking the physical intensity of rock and roll, like if Monster Movie-era Can had premonitions of The Fall and PiL’s Metal Box. Reid Small and Mark Murray are a downright VICIOUS rhythm section, with Small’s remarkable vocals channeling Arthur Lee plummeting down a well, and Murray wrenching righteously ungroovy grooves out of a Jazzmaster while wearing most of his homemade electronics rig on his belt á la Data from the Goonies. And Case Mahan and J.C. Saxon are the most exquisitely mismatched guitar duo since fuckin’ Lee and Thurston: tremolo-corrupted surf dementia struggling against panicked stabs of adolescent delay anguish. CABOLADIES are yet another miraculous development for Central Kentucky. Despite their penchant for synthesis via some suspiciously expensive-looking gear, their music has an organic, tidal feel, minus all the hippie-dippie baggage that that might imply. Indeed, "psychedelic" is an almost offensively deficient term for the contours of the temporary universe summoned by the drones, mismatched loops, and distant lulls of these fine gents… excuse me, LADIES. http://www.myspace.com/caboladies

I’ll keep it short here, since I rambled through all the show details in the Announcements section. Vampire Weekend = wonderfully fun indie pop with African pop leanings from NYC. No doubt, the catchiest shite you’ll hear this year. The High Water Marks = bouncy, wall-of-sound fuzz pop from members/former members of the Apples in Stereo, Palermo, Oranger, and The Fakes. Their new record, “Polar,” was just released on Athens’ Happy Happy Birthday To Me. The Nastys (aka the band formerly known as Hot Models) = young Lexers playing revved-up, blues-inflected psych rock. One of my favorite new local bands. Rakadu shakes it likes it means it whether it’s straight up tribal-style or warped gypsy theater cabaret fun (have you seen their piece set to Man Man’s “Engwish Bwudd”?!). FREE food, coffee, goodies, a holiday art/hip crafts market, and GREAT music – if you’ve got something better to do, DAMN, tell me and I’ll do it too. [Full disclosure: I helped organize this show.]
