TLP January 17, 2008

A thin, trying-to-get-back-in-the-swing-of-things Lex Pro. Expect a full issue to arrive on Monday. In the meantime, catch the quick gig at the Icehouse tonight (Jason Ajemian w/Eric Sutherland), then head to Al’s to warm up with the Swells. Tomorrow, check the opening of Dima Strakovsky’s sound installation/performance on the 2nd floor of the Downtown Arts Center. Saturday, shake a tail feather to help raise some dough for the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center or bounce to Murder Mystery at the Dame.

Thanks to Greg for the outdoor and bike haps.

Hope all are well.
Luv, Ross

:: Thursday, January 17 ::
JASON AJEMIAN w/ERIC SUTHERLAND and @ The Icehouse, 412 Cross St (just off W. Maxwell)
8pm, all ages, $3-$5 suggested donation

Year six of the Outside the Spotlight series kicks off with a short show at the Icehouse. Lexington poet Eric Sutherland opens the evening, setting the stage for a set of quadraphonic experimentation by Chicago bassist/mad scientist Jason Ajemian.

A manically creative artist, Jason's output just can't be squeezed into a single genre for easy consumption. We've seen him in jazz contexts as a bassist with Dragons 1976 (with Aram Shelton and Tim Daisy), Triage (with Dave Rempis and Tim Daisy), and Day Dreams (for which he served as leader and composer - with Rob Mazurek, Chad Taylor, and Tony Malaby). We've seen him as half of the psychedelic folk duo Born Heller (with Josephine Foster). And, we've seen him as half of the Lay All Over Its (with Nori Tanaka), a group that bridges the gap between free jazz and freak folk with mantra-like vocals over bass and drum work. We've heard tale of the 32 piece orchestra he pulled together for his Who Cares How Long You Sink project, and we've heard his backwards transcription (for orchestra!) of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" (see Jason conduct the Paris performance - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJURdz9Sadw). The man's a natural explorer. What's he's got planned for the solo performance tomorrow night? I'm not sure, but I can't wait to find out. You can find samples of some of his various musical concoctions at http://www.myspace.com/lovealloverit.

Why a “short show”? ‘Cause it’s gonna be cold. Doors will open at 8. Show will start promptly at 8:30pm, and will most likely be wrapped up by 9:30pm.
[Full Disclosure: I helped organize this show.]
