Bedtime - Self-Titled
(Slow Owl Recordings)

What strikes me right of the bat when this record starts is that it's incredible that I know these people. James Friley, lead singer and keyboardist, speaks, sings, and plays at such a sophisticated level that it's hard to believe he's my age, and actually a little younger at only 20 years. I don't mean to imply that 20 years is too short a time to reach the point James has, it's just that at the helm of his band he makes me think they're a bunch of mid 30s in an established band I hear of often from hip sites like Pitchfork. This is because Bedtime is ready for that sort of exposure, and they deserve it. Their first full-length, "Self-titled" contains so many catchy melodies and brilliant musical attention by every band member that it's instantly enjoyable and more so after multiple listens. One moment you'll be snared by some masterful piano/keyboard line or striking vocals by James, and then you'll be lost in a guitar riff by Lucas Ward. Andrew Ramey and Josh Blaine round out the quartet with a skillful rhythm section. Bedtime's, "Self-titled" is an awesome CD and one by fellow Kentuckians. Do yourself a favor and catch a show from these guys while they still have time to play Lexington. Their live shows are truly rewarding and worth supporting. – Cody Swanson

Our pure pop favorites Big Fresh celebrate the release of their immaculate new cd, “B.F.F. (Big Fresh Forever),” on the new Garden Gate label. It’s the first Big Fresh release destined for full-scale national distribution, and this show is your chance to help them celebrate their step out into the great big world. THE N.E.C. w/BEDTIME @ The Void, 518 E. High St - 8pm, all ages, somewhere in the $3 - $5 range

The first in a slew of good all ages shows coming up at the city's best skateshop. [Peep the Announcements section for a full list.] The N.E.C. = catchy heavy garage psych from Atlanta. Loud and wonderful live. Bedtime = young Lexington band (actually, I think the band's still split between Lex and Ashland). Soaring, dramatic vocals over driving, almost carnival-esque, piano-led rock. :: Saturday, January 26 ::
“Halfway to Forecastle” mini-festival w/BAND OF HORSES, VHS OR BETA, CASS McCOMBS, and more @ Headliners (Louisville) - 3pm - 3am, ages 18+, $15

Remember those two days last week that were like 60 and 70 degrees? [Ed. Note: - it was ‘last week’ when she wrote this. By now, it’s ‘week before last’ and those temps seem long gone.] That was pretty awesome, right? Like having a little bit of summer right in the dead of winter. Ahhh.... But wait! You can bring back that lovin' feelin' once again with a mini-fest to hold you over until a time when it won't snow a couple days later. Our friends in Louisville are gearing up for another Forecastle Fesitval later in July but have decided to start the party early this year with the Halfway to Forecastle Mini-Fest, going down on January 26th for 12 solid hours at Headliner's in Louisville. In addition to the stellar lineup, (actually can we just talk about that for a minute? Ummm:

Tyler Ramsey (from Band of Horses) (5:00 - 5:30pm)
Noizejoi (6:00 - 6:30)
Early Day Miners (7:00 - 7:30)
Catfish Haven (8:00 - 8:35)
Cass McCombs and the Middle Class (9:00 - 9:40)
Band of Horses (10:15 - 11:30)
VHS or BETA (12:00 - 12:45)
Coltrane Motion (12:45 - 1:15)
How I Became the Bomb (1:15 - 1:45)
Jesse Jamz (1:45 - 2:15)
Ferdinand Fox (2:15 - 3:00am)

oh HELLZ YEAH!)

The whole thing's basically a benefit concert for local BMXer Jimmy Levan, who's recovering from a recent big skate boarding accident. There's even going to be an outdoor skate park in the parking lot, complete with a heated canopy, to pay homage to our fallen solider. Exhibitions from local and regional skaters will start at 3pm, so make sure you get there early enough to catch 'em. As always with Forecastle, there's going to be a totally nautical theme and costumes are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. You know what to do.
