tONIGHT! Gallery Hop - "Swap" at the Downtown Arts Center, "Hide and Seek" at the Miller House
Awight, peeps.
Final Hop of the season tonight. I haven't been out to a Hop in awhile but I'm heading out to two spots (at least) tonight. First, tripping down to the Downtown Arts Center (141 E. Main St) to catch (and p'haps participate) in Bill Santen & Bruce Burris's collaborative exhibition "SWAP." Click over to http://elandfgallery.blogspot.com/2009/06/blog-post.html for the full scoop. (5-8pm, all ages, FREE)
After that, leaving the downtown area to check out the group exhibit/happening, "Hide and Seek," assembled by recent UK grad Laura Holt, at the Miller House (832 Lochmere Place - directions below). With a slate of 22 young Lexington artists and four bands (including one of my favorites, Bedtime), I expect great things from the exhibit. However, the Miller House itself, a hidden gem of modern architecture, will be a big part of show. Check out http://www.thefoundationforadvancedarchitecture.org/pdfs/millerhouse-brochure.pdf and http://www.chevychaser.com/Articles-c-2009-03-04-85456.113117_The_Cube_Exploded.html for the scoop on the House. Here are driving directions ...
* take outbound Richmond Rd. (5 miles)
* turn left on Hays Blvd (0.5 miles)
* turn left on Chilesburg Rd (0.5 miles)
* turn left on Lochmere Place/ the Miller House
Hope to see you there.

tONIGHT! Nana Grizol @ Gumbo Ya Ya - aLL aGES!
TONIGHT! Tuesday > June 16th
Nana Grizol w/Asstricks* and Little Noodles
@ Gumbo Ya Ya restaurant, 1080 S. Broadway, Lexington, KY
9pm > all ages > $3 > sponsored by YouAintNoPicasso.com and TheLexintonProject.org
Yup, big fun in a small place. Athens, GA's Nana Grizol stole my heart when they performed as part of the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise show at The Red Mile Round Barn last October. Ever since, their record "Love It Love It" has been on heavy rotation on my turntable and in my earbuds. Don't know if I can properly describe the sound ... ecstatic, emotionally resonant, ramshackle indie pop/rock ... ah, that makes 'em sound like douches (or, rather, makes me sound like a douche). Anyway, click over to myspace.com/nanagrizol and listen to a couple tunes. Asstricks* is a new project featuring members of Big Fresh and the Dialectics. Little Noodles is Lex Pro contributor and all around swell gal, Eli Riveire, whom some of you that don't know her directly might at least recognize as the cute ukelele player from the short-lived, but well-loved girl group Laloux. She and her capable cohort Nick Warner will charm us with a few uke pop songs (yes, they are planning a double uke attack). I expect it'll be a relatively short show (both the locals are planning short sets), so show up on the early side. I think Little Noodles will probably start by 9:30 and things will roll quickly from there.
If you're familiar with Ya Ya, you might be thinking, 'where are they gonna put the band?" We're gonna clear out the tables and chairs at the front of the shop and set the band up against the front window. It'll likely still be tight, but it's meant to be more house party than rock show. Come Come Come! Great inexpensive cajun grub (if you show up early) and cheap beers ($2 Abita & Budweiser/Bud Light, $3 Sam Adams & Red Stripe) for those of age.

Some notes ...
* The show is open to all ages, but there will be a full bar available for peeps interested in imbibing.
* There is tons of free, secure parking directly adjacent to the venue.
* The Red Mile Round Barn holds around 600 people. It's an intimate, odd, and completely charming spot. The people at the track are working hard to make it a fun place to see a concert. If you've been to any of the recent shows at the space, you may have had trouble seeing the band. Rest assured, there will be a stage for this show. Should dramatically improve visibility.
Have a question about anything else relating to the show? Hit me with an email at prcompton(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll do my best to answer promptly.
> How about some fun stuff? Cool? Cool.
Kelefa Sanneh's piece on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy in The New Yorker
A couple tracks from BPB's lovely collaboration with Cheyenne Mize, "Among the Gold" and commentary from our pal Michael Powell of TheDecibelTolls.com. This collection of turn of the 20th Century tunes was just released as a 10" record by Louisville's Karate Body Records. You can purchase a very high quality digital download of the rec exclusively via ThinkIndie.com (go through the CD Central download site).
